Alex stood before a gigantic tree that dominated the entire area. Without unnecessary words, the guards swiftly led him toward the city spreading high above the ground among the mighty branches. He was directed to an entrance carved into the tree trunk, leading inside.
Ahead lay spiral stairs hollowed out in the thick trunk. They were narrow and dimly lit, illuminated only by small lamps attached to the walls. The steps were uneven and damp, making the climb exhausting and risky.
After a few minutes, Alex felt exhausted. His breathing became heavy, his heart pounded in his chest, and his knees began to burn like fire. Occasionally, he needed to pause to catch his breath, but the guards offered him no respite, prodding him forward impatiently.
