The world blurred as Raito hit the pavement, his body crashing against the unforgiving asphalt. The impact should have shattered his bones, should have left him writhing in agony. But instead, there was… nothing. No pain, no broken limbs however there was just a dull pressure where the car had struck him.
Lying still, he let his breath slow, forcing his body into limp submission. The scent of burning rubber filled the air as the stolen car screeched to a halt a few meters away. Shouts rang out, hurried footsteps slapping against the ground.
The thieves approached his body swiftly
"Shit! Did we kill him?" A frantic voice. Young, panicked. The driver.
"Damn it, why'd you swerve?!" Another voice, harsher, older. The accomplice.
"I—I didn't mean to! He just came out of nowhere!"
Raito just listened, his eyes barely cracked open beneath heavy lashes. Civilians were gathering. Too many witnesses. If he stood up now he would attract too much attention if he walked away from a direct hit like this and to be specific it would raise too many questions.
And questions were dangerous.
Smart move, Kurai's voice hummed in his mind, laced with amusement. Lying there all lifeless… you almost look like a real corpse. Should I add some blood for effect?
Raito ignored her. The thief was kneeling beside him now, hesitant hands hovering over his body. His breath reeked of cigarettes and fear.
"I-I think he's out cold. Maybe just a concussion?"
"Forget him!" the older one hissed. "Cops'll be here any second. We need to go!"
A beat of silence. Then a curse. "Shit. Fine. Let's go."
Hurried footsteps. The slam of car doors. The engine revved before the vehicle peeled away, tires screeching as they vanished into the distance.
The moment they were gone, Raito's eyes snapped open.
That was fun to watch, Kurai mused. You know, if you had just dodged—
"Tch I wasn't expecting my body to still be this sluggish," Raito muttered, sitting up. He dusted himself off, rolling his shoulders as if shaking off the remnants of the impact. No broken bones, no bruises—his body had taken the hit like it was nothing.
Kurai's chuckle slithered through his thoughts. Oh, trust me. You'll adjust soon enough. You're not human anymore, Raito. You just haven't accepted it yet.
"You need to tell me these things before something like happens lady" Raito mumbled under his breath
His statement only served to make the demon within him giggle
His jaw tightened. He didn't have time for this. He could already hear approaching sirens in the distance. Time to disappear.
Slipping into the nearest alleyway, he vanished into the city streets, leaving behind only the whispers and speculation of the bystanders.
The man who should have died was simply gone.
