Chapter 39 - Chapter 35: Is He Really Gojo?!

The tryouts and team selection were over, and the newly minted Guardians of the Globe gathered in the GDA's reinforced battle room—the same place where fists flew, powers clashed, and, as Gojo put it in his head, 'where I beat the snot out of Rex.'

The room still bore marks from the fights: scorched patches, dented walls, a faint smell of burnt metal lingering.

The chosen heroes sat on hard, cube-shaped benches arranged in a loose circle—more like concrete blocks than chairs, cold and unyielding.

Gojo slouched on one at the edge, stuck between Dupli-Kate and Monster Girl, his legs stretched out, sunglasses slipping low on his nose.

Robot stood at the front, his metal frame steady as he laid out plans, while Black Samson loomed nearby, arms crossed, his face set in a permanent scowl.

'Guy's got a serious vibe,' Gojo thought, catching Samson's glare. 'Pretty sure he hates my guts.'

The rest of the team was scattered across the cubes: Shrinking Rae fidgeting with her gloves, Bulletproof sitting tall, Atom Eve quiet but alert, her eyes flicking to Robot.

Rex was still out, probably cursing in a med bay bed, which left the room a bit less loud. Gojo's face was tilted up, staring at the ceiling, bored out of his mind as Robot droned on about timetables and training periods.

'This is worse than a lecture,' he thought, barely listening to the details about daily drills and team exercises.

Robot's voice cut through his daze, clear and even. "For the time being, we'll train here at this facility. The forensics team is still investigating the Guardians' headquarters, checking for any missed evidence. If they find nothing, the site will be cleared, and we'll relocate there to establish our base."

Gojo perked up, boredom fading as an idea hit. He shot his hand up, waving it like a kid dying to be called on in class.

"Pick me, pick me, pick me!" he said, voice quick and playful, loud enough to make Dupli-Kate snort and Monster Girl glance his way with a raised eyebrow.

Robot, used to Gojo's antics by now, turned his glowing eyes to him without missing a beat.

"Yes, Gojo—do you have a question?" he asked, tone calm but with a hint of expecting something goofy.

Gojo faked a cough, clearing his throat dramatically, then leaned forward, elbows on his knees.

"Yeah, uh, how many days 'til the forensics folks wrap up at the headquarters? Like, exact number, if you've got it." He paused, then grinned wider, adding, "Oh, and why's there a training timetable for me? I mean, c'mon, I'm already pretty awesome, right?"

A few heroes chuckled—Shrinking Rae hid a giggle, Bulletproof smirked—but Samson's scowl deepened, his eyes boring into Gojo like he was sizing up trouble. Robot didn't flinch, his voice steady as ever.

"The forensics team anticipates completing their investigation within three to five days, barring unforeseen discoveries. Once cleared, we will transition to the headquarters as our operational base." He paused, addressing the second part with the same calm focus.

"As for your training, Gojo, you are now part of a team. Individual skill is not enough—coordination and trust are essential. I expect you to participate fully in the training period to build that cohesion."

Gojo leaned back, crossing his arms with a mock pout. "Three to five days? Man, that's forever," he muttered, loud enough for Monster Girl to nudge him with a grin.

"And training for teamwork? Guess I'll do that… Well, I promised someone to help too." He was joking—mostly—but Robot's point landed.

Gojo could solo most fights, but a team meant playing nice, syncing up, not just doing his own thing.

Robot had just finished answering Gojo's questions about the forensics team and training timetables, his voice steady and calm, when Black Samson—standing off to the side, arms crossed, face locked in that grumpy frown—suddenly spoke up. He didn't raise a hand or wait for a pause, just cut in like he'd been holding it in too long.

"I don't know anyone here and even you, Robot," he said, his deep voice rumbling, "but we need a leader we can look in the eye—not a bunch of zeroes and ones calling the commands and shots." He paused, then tacked on, "No offense," like it softened the jab.

The room went quiet, heads turning. Dupli-Kate snapped upright, her eyes narrowing. "Uh, that's actually super offensive," she shot back, voice sharp, leaning forward on her cube. "You don't just say that to someone you don't even know."

Atom Eve, sitting a few benches away, nodded, her face tight with annoyance. "Yeah, you can't talk to Robot like that," she said, her tone firm but calmer, like she was trying to keep things from boiling over. "He's earned this—more than most of us or… even you."

Their eyes darted to Gojo, almost in sync, like they expected him to jump in—maybe toss a joke or back them up.

Gojo caught the look, his smirk fading just a touch as he straightened up, sliding his sunglasses up his nose.

"Yeah, big… blac… uh, I mean big man," he started, catching himself before saying something dumb, his voice cool but pointed.

"You can't just blurt out whatever 'cause you're all tough and tall. I mean, I don't even talk to Robot like that, and I'm me." He leaned forward, elbows on his knees, grin creeping back but with an edge.

"As for a leader? Robot's way, way, way more qualified than all of you lot combined. He makes calls based on logic—y'know, what's gonna work best for the specific situation or in a mission, and not some mushy feelings getting in the way their because of some emotions. Ever heard that big decisions don't need emotions messing 'em up? So, I'm suggesting—nicely—that you zip it before you rag on Robot again while I'm around."

The room froze, every eye on Gojo. Dupli-Kate and Eve had wanted him to speak, sure, but they hadn't expected that—a full-on, reasonable takedown that didn't just dunk on Samson but laid out why Robot was the guy for the job.

Their mouths hung open slightly, caught off guard by how sharp his words hit. Shrinking Rae stifled a giggle, Bulletproof raised an eyebrow, and Monster Girl nudged Gojo with a quiet "Nice one."

They thought he was done, figured he'd lean back and toss out a joke to lighten the mood. Nope—they were wrong.

Gojo kept going, his voice picking up a playful lilt but still carrying weight. "And if you're looking for a leader to pump you up like some soldier before every damn mission, might I suggest YouTube? Plenty of motivational videos out there—'Rise and grind!' and all that jazz. Should do the trick." He grinned wide, leaning back now, hands behind his head.

"I've worked with Robot, and he's… good. Real good. Trust me, you don't need a cheerleader when you've got a guy who's already three steps ahead."

Even Robot, standing steady as ever, seemed caught off guard—not that his metal face showed it. His glowing eyes flicked to Gojo, a faint pause in his usual rhythm.

He'd expected pushback like Samson's; every team had its doubters, and he was ready for it. But Gojo stepping up, not just defending him but laying out a case—logic, results, no fluff?

That was new. Samson's logic wasn't wrong—a team needed a leader who felt human, someone to rally behind—but Gojo's point hit harder: Robot's strength was his clarity, his ability to cut through chaos and make the call that'd win if possible.

Emotions could cloud that, and Gojo, in his own slick way, made it clear why that mattered.

And because of that Robot, Dupli-Kate and Atom-Eve thought all the same thing at the same time in their mind.

'Is He Really Gojo?!'
