Chapter 45 - 43. Divination and the Effect of Time on the Death Note

The witch's power grows stronger at night.

If it is a full moon, the magic power will be even more abundant than usual.

Akako Koizumi lives in a detached villa, and the basement of the villa is the place where she performs witchcraft.

In a space as eerie as an underground cave, filled with the light of numerous torches and candles, Akako Koizumi stepped into it and stood in front of a large crucible emitting red smoke.

"Bring me the dragon's whiskers, the mermaid's tears, and the kappa's eyes."

As soon as she finished speaking, a dwarf man walked out of the darkness and replied: "Yes".

Soon, the man brought up the things that Akako Koizumi needed on a tray, and she dropped them one by one into the crimson liquid in the crucible.

The red smoke became thicker.

Seeing this,

"I offer this handwriting as the doppelganger of the person being questioned, and sign it."

Akako Koizumi put the autograph into the crucible, then picked up the snake-head-shaped scepter and reached into the crucible to stir it.

While stirring, he muttered:

"Demon of Hades, leader of the dark monsters, please give me strength, please give me strength"

"The evil dark lord, the lord of hell who betrayed God"

"Lucifer"

"I will summon you here."

When a large amount of red smoke was released from the crucible, Akako Koizumi held a finger of the spell in her hand and threw it into the crucible along with the surging magic power.

"Show your ugly self and answer my question!"

A strong wind suddenly blew up in the windless basement, and the boiling scarlet liquid emitted an intense light. Under the overflowing light, a blue flame-like figure suddenly rose up.

"Who? The fool who summoned me..."

"Come on, answer me, Lucifer." Akako Koizumi looked at the abnormal being that appeared in the flames calmly, and her tone was like an order, "Tell me the real name of the person who wrote this handwriting."

"Gunter... von... Elli."

The figure formed in the flames slowly spoke a name, then looked at Akako Koizumi and shouted in a powerful voice: "Who are you who dares to order me?"

"Stop talking nonsense and tell me what Hayashi Yoshiki's secret is."

Akako Koizumi was not affected by the other party's tone at all, and continued to seek for the answer in a condescending manner.

Lucifer leaned down.

The blue flame leaped, and the distance between it and Akako Koizumi was only a few inches away.

Just as Lucifer was about to speak, his body suddenly exploded with a bang.

The blue flames flew everywhere like gorgeous fireworks.

The housekeeper standing behind Akako Koizumi cried out in surprise, his face filled with disbelief: "How is this possible?!"

According to the knowledge passed down by the Red Magic lineage, the summoned demon cannot leave on its own during the ritual unless the magician actively cuts off the magic power supply.

Akako Koizumi also had a look of astonishment on her face.

After a while,

"It's so annoying. How can I know his secret?"

"If you use the Death Note to control the target's time of death, it must occur within 23 days of human time after the name is written."

"If it exceeds this time, it will be judged as invalid, and the person whose name is written will die immediately of heart failure."

That is to say, if Hayashi Yoshiki wrote the target's name on January 1, according to the cause of death he arranged, the target could only live until January 24 at the latest... If he wrote that the other party died on January 25, this would undoubtedly exceed the rules of the Death Note and would only cause the other party to die of a heart attack 40 seconds later.

There is no need to test this rule.

But soon after Hayashi Yoshiki noticed that the time in this world became chaotic, he began to conduct related experiments.

"Let's say today is January 1st, and tomorrow is February 24th, but if I write in the Death Note that the target dies on February 24th... it will still cause the target to die directly from a heart attack."

"The content in the Death Note is not affected by the time here. It can only record dates between January 1st and January 24th."

"But..."

Looking at a certain entry on the first few pages of the notebook, Hayashi Yoshiki's eyes became extremely bright.

"Otoharada Kuro"

"At 19:41 on March 3, he died of cerebral infarction caused by excessive drinking."

He wrote this on February 14, Valentine's Day.

And the date has been changing every day since then.

Sometimes it becomes March, sometimes it becomes February or April, but it has never been March 3rd... and today is the 25th day since Hayashi Yoshiki wrote this name.

The man named Otoharada Kuro is still alive.

Judging from the results, the Death Note is not affected by the time of this world, but it can also be led astray by it...

If March 3rd had not come yet, Otoharada Kuro might have lived forever.

Interestingly, because the time and cause of Otoharada Kuro's death have been recorded, he seemed to be safe until he died "as promised.".

Which mean he is pretty much unkillable untill March 3rd.

"Unfortunately, tomorrow is March 3rd."

This is the time Hayashi Yoshiki got from others.

Because confirming the time is very important for the holder of the Death Note, Hayashi Yoshiki always confirms the date changes of the next few days with others in advance...

However, the inconvenience in time did not affect Hayashi Yoshiki's use of notes much.

If today is January 1st, and tomorrow suddenly becomes February, he only needs to write this:

"Yousuke Kanuma"

"He did something at 13:53 on January 1st, and died at 14:02 the next day"

That way Yousuke Kanuma will still die the next day no matter the date.

From this we can see that although the Death Note becomes "less convenient", it actually enhances the use of the note overall.

Hayashi Yoshiki can do more.
