That morning, Zak woke up feeling exhausted from the previous night, but there was no time to waste on laziness. He had to prepare for the divine mission.
The first thing he did was upgrade the bathroom. He opened the base upgrade menu and saw that "Simple Bathroom - $2,000" was the only option available that he could afford at the moment.
"Purchase."
As soon as the purchase was confirmed, the bathroom walls began to change automatically. The cracked floor was replaced with clean, elegant tiles, and brand-new faucets for hot and cold water suddenly appeared. A modern mirror was added to the wall, along with a small cabinet for personal items.
"Whoa!" Zak said, running his fingers through his damp hair after showering.
But as he enjoyed the warm water, the system sighed loudly in his head.
"Why… why do I have to witness all of this? Why are you torturing me like this?!"
Zak chuckled mischievously and said, "Oh, sorry, I forgot you were suffering here."
"You're doing this on purpose, you idiot! Just hurry up and get out before I lose my mind!"
After ten more minutes of tormenting the system, Zak finally stepped out of the shower, feeling refreshed. He got dressed, then opened the base upgrade menu when the system suggested something important.
System: "Alright, Zak, you have $11,715 now, so I strongly suggest upgrading the base to the next level."
Zak: "And what do I get in return for that?"
System: "Well, let me explain: By upgrading the base to level two, the following improvements will be made:"
Room Enhancements:
Your room will become more advanced, with a new wardrobe and modern lighting that gives it a more stylish touch.
Another room will be repaired, equipped with a bed and wardrobe, allowing you to accommodate someone else if needed.
Main Facility Repairs:
Workshop: It will become usable, allowing you to modify your weapons and gear there.
Kitchen: You'll have a fridge and an oven, enabling you to cook food instead of relying on fast food all the time.
Storage Room: A separate space will be available for storing excess equipment and important items.
Laboratory: It will become functional, allowing you to craft potions or other chemical substances.
Structural Repairs:
Some of the cracked walls will be repaired.
The security system will be slightly improved, making the base more secure against any sudden attack.
Zak didn't hesitate. He pressed the upgrade button, and the system deducted $5,000 from his account. The base trembled slightly as a blue aura surrounded it before everything changed rapidly.
"Not bad… not bad at all," Zak muttered as he walked through his newly upgraded room, noticing the modern wardrobe and advanced lighting. Then, he headed to the kitchen, where he saw the brand-new fridge and gleaming oven.
"This is much better… at least I can cook something healthy now."
But the system interrupted his thoughts with a sarcastic remark: "If you even know how to cook in the first place."
Zak: "I'm great at heating up pizza. That's enough!"
System: "Truly impressive, Chef Gordon Ramsay!"
Zak chuckled lightly, then said, "Alright, the base is better now. And now… it's time to plan how to kill the Penguin."
Sitting in his newly improved room, Zak pondered how to carry out his new mission: "Eradicate the Penguin." He didn't have much information about the man, but he knew that Oswald Cobblepot wasn't just an ordinary gangster—he was one of the most influential men in Gotham.
"Alright, where do I start?" Zak muttered, while the system responded seriously.
System: "If you want to track him down, you have two main options. The first and most obvious is to go to his famous club, 'The Iceberg Lounge,' where he spends most of his time when he's not busy with his dirty business."
A picture of a luxurious club with icy blue lighting and decorated penguin statues appeared on Zak's screen. The place looked like a frozen fortress where the rich and criminals gathered in the same space.
Zak: "This looks like a straight-up death trap… Walking in there without a plan would be suicide."
System: "Exactly. But there's another option. The Penguin also has a strong network in the slums, where he runs arms deals and other illegal trades. If you manage to track down one of his men there, it might lead you straight to him."
Zak: "Hmm… so I have two choices: mingle with the rich in the club or dig through the filth in the backstreets…"
The system suddenly laughed, then said, "Oh, and don't forget—there's always a chance you might meet a beautiful girl if you're lucky!"
Zak: "Huh? What does that have to do with anything?"
System: "Gotham is full of surprises, kid. Who knows? You might find someone to help you with the mission… or someone to pickpocket you."
Zak: "Oh, how optimistic of you…"
Zak stood up, his iconic pistols, Ebony & Ivory, gleaming at his sides. He pulled his black jacket over his shirt and strapped his dagger belt around his leg.
"Alright, time for the hunt. Let's see where I can find the Penguin first…"
Zak thought for a moment before saying, "Why not try blending in with the rich?"
The system burst into laughter. "The poorest guy wants to act rich—how wonderful! Alright, sir, some fancy clothes for the wealthy gentleman, please!"
A mini-map appeared on the screen, highlighting a nearby store with the label: "There's a shop selling classic attire close by. Let's check it out, Mr. New Money!"
Zak, who wasn't used to such clothing, sighed as he walked down the street toward the store the system pointed out. He knew that sneaking into the Iceberg Lounge required the right appearance—he couldn't just walk in wearing his combat pants and comfy sneakers.
Zak: "I can't believe I'm doing this… Do I really have to dress like one of these rich guys?"
System: "Dude, you're not going to a backyard barbecue in the slums. You're heading into a den of the rich and criminal. If you want to blend in, you need to look the part."
Standing in front of the clothing store, Zak took in the upscale atmosphere, a stark contrast to Gotham's grimy streets. The store's name was "Hastings Classics," and the glass display showcased elegant suits, luxurious coats, and polished shoes, making Zak let out a deep sigh.
Zak: "I just hope nothing in here costs a human kidney."
He stepped inside, where he was greeted by a salesman with a forced smile. The man was slender, in his mid-forties, wearing a sharp gray suit and small glasses perched on his nose.
Salesman: "Welcome, sir. How may I assist you today?"
Sensing the atmosphere, Zak replied, "I'm looking for something suitable for upscale parties. Something classic but not too extravagant."
The salesman quickly scanned him from head to toe, as if evaluating his worth, then offered a small, polite smile.
"I believe I have just the thing for you… But, do you have a specific budget in mind?"
Zak: "Something stylish but not insanely expensive. Let's say around $500 to $700."
The salesman raised an eyebrow, clearly surprised. It was as if he wasn't expecting a customer with such a "modest" budget compared to his usual clientele. But he smiled nonetheless and said, "Alright, I believe we can work with that."
He led Zak to a section of the store, beginning what would be a long journey of discussions and fittings…
The salesman started showing him different pieces. First, he presented a full black suit priced at $1,500—Zak nearly collapsed from shock.
Zak (whispering to the system): "Does he want me to sell one of my kidneys for this?"
System: "Or maybe sell me instead. That'd be a brilliant idea!"
Zak: "Shut up."
The salesman moved on to other options until they settled on a suitable outfit:
Elegant black classic trousers – $120
Black classic shirt – $90
Polished formal shoes – $150
Long classic coat reaching the knees – $250
Total: $610
Zak stood in front of the mirror after putting on his new clothes. He examined himself, checking how he looked, then turned to the system and asked:
Zak: "Do I look like a mafia guy now?"
System: "Absolutely! But don't forget to speak with confidence, or you'll stand out like a sore thumb."
Zak sighed, then headed to the cashier to pay.
Zak: "Alright, here's the money."
The salesman took the cash, smiled, and said, "A fine choice, sir. I hope you have an enjoyable night, wherever you're headed."
Zak: "Thanks. Hopefully, I won't have to come back anytime soon."
Stepping out of the store, Zak felt his wallet had become significantly lighter, but he knew that blending in with Gotham's elite would make his mission much easier. He paused for a moment in the street, adjusted his collar slightly, and then said:
"Alright, Penguin… I'm coming for you."
