Chapter 13 - THE FORGOTTEN DAWN

The world around Kaito shifted once more. His legs were still unsteady, the raw energy of the Shard of Eternity still humming through his veins like an electric current.

The aftermath of the battle had left him feeling hollow, the void in his chest a reminder of how close he had come to being consumed by his own darkness.

His breath was uneven, and for a moment, he wondered if the creature, that twisted version of himself, was only a warning. A glimpse into what he could become if he lost control of the power within him.

The air here was strange. The sky, no longer a swirling abyss of shadow, now held a soft light—almost a dawn of sorts. But it wasn't the gentle warmth of the sun Kaito expected. No, this light was cold and sterile, its warmth absent, like the faint glow of stars seen through a haze of thick fog.

The world around him was fractured, the ground cracked and shattered, like a place that had been forgotten for eons, left to decay in isolation.

Kaito's hand still gripped the Shard, its glow now dimmed, its power settled like a slumbering beast within him.

He felt it stir occasionally, a whisper at the edge of his consciousness, reminding him of the responsibility it demanded, and the dangers it could unleash. But for now, it remained quiet, dormant, as though waiting for him to make his next move.

The creature—the twisted version of himself—was gone, reduced to nothing but ash and shadow. But the words it had spoken continued to linger in Kaito's mind.

The darkness within you will consume you.

You will become nothing but a reflection.

The Shard will devour you.

Kaito clenched his fists, the harsh words biting into him like an icy wind. He refused to let that happen. He would not become a shadow of himself. The Shard, whatever its true nature was, would not be his undoing. He had to control it.

He began walking, the ground beneath his feet cracking with every step. His eyes scanned the desolate horizon, looking for any sign of what lay beyond this strange world.

Was it a test? A trial designed to break him? Or had he truly stepped into a place beyond understanding?

As he walked, the landscape seemed to change around him. The cracks in the earth deepened, and strange structures began to appear—tall, jagged spires made of the same obsidian-like material as the creature.

They seemed to pulse with energy, faint veins of light running through them like blood vessels beneath stone.

Suddenly, a movement caught Kaito's eye. In the distance, a figure appeared—a small silhouette against the dim light. The figure was standing motionless, their back to him, barely visible in the strange glow.

Kaito instinctively reached for his sword, but something held him back. A pull in his gut, a feeling that heknew this person, that they were not an enemy. He took a cautious step forward, his heart pounding in his chest as he approached.

The figure turned.

It was a woman. A stranger—yet familiar. Her features were blurred, like an image out of focus, but her eyes… her eyes were what Kaito noticed first. They glowed with an otherworldly light, an almost piercing intensity that seemed to look straight into his soul.

She did not speak at first, only watching him with those unsettling eyes. Then, finally, she spoke, her voice soft but carrying an eerie weight.

"You've come far, Kaito Ren," she said, her words drifting through the air like whispers in the wind.

Kaito's eyes narrowed, instinctively moving to a defensive stance. "Who are you?"

The woman's lips curled into a faint smile, but it was not one of warmth. It was the kind of smile that suggested she knew more than she was letting on.

"I am nothing," she said. "And I am everything."

Kaito's mind raced. The words were cryptic, but somehow, he understood what she meant. She was neither fully an ally nor an enemy. She was something in-between—like the Shard itself, something beyond the grasp of simple definition.

"I know what you seek," the woman continued, her voice still like a song sung on a distant wind. "The power to control the darkness, to conquer the Shard. But be warned, Kaito Ren… there are forces at play here, forces that go beyond your understanding. The power you seek, it has its price."

"I've already heard that," Kaito muttered, clenching his jaw. "I don't care about the price. I'll do whatever it takes to keep the darkness from swallowing me."

The woman's smile faded slightly, her eyes narrowing.

"It's not just about you anymore. The Shard… it is a key. A key to the ForgottenRealms, to the places that even the gods have forgotten. You may control the power, but you will never escape its pull. Not unless you understand the nature of the darkness within you."

Kaito felt a shiver run down his spine.

Forgotten Realms? The very words seemed to hold an ancientpower, a weight that made the air grow colder, heavier.

"What are you saying?" Kaito asked, his voice low, almost a growl. "That I have no choice but to be consumed by it? That I am destined to become some… some kind of monster?"

The woman's eyes gleamed with a sharpness that seemed to cut through the very air.

"No. But you are bound to it. And you will need to understand what that means. TheShardofEternity is not just an object. It is a force, a reflection of the world's balance—a balance that is now beginning to unravel."

The words hung in the air like a dark prophecy. Kaito felt his heart thud harder in his chest, a sense of dread creeping over him. If the Shard was the key to something greater, something that had been hidden from the world for so long… then what did that mean for him? For the realms?

"The world is changing, Kaito Ren," the woman said, stepping closer. "The Fissures are opening. What was once hidden is beginning to emerge. The forgotten will return, and with them, the truth of the Shard will be revealed."

Her eyes bored into his, and for a moment, Kaito felt as though he was drowning in them. He could see it—the truth, the burden of knowledge, swirling within her gaze.

The Shard, the darkness, the realms beyond—they were all connected, like threads woven into a tapestry too vast for him to comprehend.

"What must I do?" Kaito asked, his voice barely a whisper, but with an edge of desperation creeping in. "Tell me what I must do to control this power."

The woman remained silent for a moment, her gaze turning toward the horizon. The spires of obsidian glowed brighter, the air thick with energy.

"You must travel to the HeartoftheRealms," she said, her voice steady. "There, you will understand the true nature of the Shard. But beware, Kaito Ren. You will face trials unlike anything you have ever encountered. The darkness will test you. And if you fail…"

Her voice trailed off, leaving the rest unspoken.

Kaito's heart pounded in his chest. The HeartoftheRealms? He had no idea what that was, but it sounded like the only place where he could learn how to control the Shard. It was a place he had to find, no matter the cost.

But as he turned to leave, the woman spoke one last time, her voice like a distant echo.

"The journey will not be yours alone. There are others, Kaito Ren. Those who seek to control the Shard for themselves."

Kaito froze, the hairs on the back of his neck standing on end. "Who?"

But when he turned to face her again, the woman was gone, her figure vanishing into the ethereal light of the strange world.

He was alone once more. And yet, the weight of her words lingered in the air.

The journey will not be yours alone.

Kaito's heart beat faster. He wasn't just up against the darkness. There were others out there, others who would stop at nothing to seize the Shard's power for themselves.

The war for the Shard had begun.
