Black city, this was a city that was named after the Black clan as since it's establishment it had been under the management and leadership of the Black Clan. On this day a solemn air lingered throughout the city.
In the Black clans reception hall a little boy stood facing two middle aged men in suits, his emotions going out of control as he heard the devastating news that had just been announced.
"I'm sorry to be the barer of bad news and as much as I hate to be the one saying this there was nothing we could have done." one of the men said.
Drake however, had already stopped listening when he heard that his parents were lost in a Black gate.
Drake wasn't borne a true descendant of the Black Clan, he was an orphan child his father the city lord had saved as an infant and brought back to the Black clan where he was raised as the adopted child of City lord David Black and his wife Celine.
However, they had now been lost in a Black gate. You might be asking, what is a Black gate? Well let's describe today's world for you a little bit.

A little over 900 years ago, humans finally broke that barrier that had been preventing them from deciphering space teleportation technology and finally stepped into the era of space portals and teleportation, It was the great dawn of a new golden age. Unfortunately, it didn't last long, shortly after came the bad fortune.
What bad fortune you might be wondering? Well, usually when a teleportation portal is activated it needs two portals, one to serve as the entry point and the other as the exit node at the destination. Science is all about taking risks they said, and well, they did. They went ahead and risked the very existence of all of humanity, some godforsaken mad scientist decided to activate a spatial portal without linking it to a destination portal to serve as the exit point.
This meant the portal was an open gate leading to nowhere, what they didn't know was that it was also the gate to hell. Probes of all known sorts were sent to explore; to document what was on the other side until something beyond their expectations found its way to this side of the portal, but unlike those space UFO movies you've seen where aliens come in peace, these guys were not friendly. The open portal led to a dimension that humans later named The Abyss. The Abyss was a whole new world that was home to terrifying Demonic Beasts and the even more powerful monstrous Abyssal Beasts.
When the portal was activated, the gate to the Abyss was opened and large numbers of the creatures of the Abyss surged into our world and went on a rampage humanity quickly reacted and destroyed the portal but by then it was already too late as large numbers of beasts had already escaped into our world killing anything and everything in their path, and things got even worse when the beasts found their way to the ocean.
Humans turned their greatest trustee weapons towards this new threat the nuclear weapons. They worked at first, but then soon quickly lost effect. This was because the beasts of the abyss soon adapted to them and soon started feeding on and growing on the nuclear and radioactive wastes they had devoured from nuclear and radioactive deposits in the ocean, it was then that humans finally realized that their oh so precious nuclear and electromagnetic weapons which they were so proud of were useless when faced off against these beasts, and with no natural predators to put them in their place the beasts wreaked havoc causing devastation wherever they went and humanity quickly lost a tenth of it's population.
Seeing how dire the situation was turning the ARK operation was initiated. Just like Noah's ark was used to escape the calamity of the great flood, humans used the large Biospheres already loaded with samples of almost all existing specie of plants and animals to escape into outer space since not even the oceans were safe.
Years later, monitoring satellites observed that the creatures that had been causing so much destruction were actually dying off and they were dying fast. Recon and research teams were deployed to investigate and understand why this was happening. It was soon found that the reason behind the high death rate of the beasts was because of the deficiency of some elements and energy in the earths atmosphere and the beasts couldn't survive with the scarcity of this energy and soon the beasts all died off and the Arks descended, but the damage had already been done.
Humans finally finding some reprieve started to reclaim their territory but many cities had been destroyed after being ravaged by the Demonic beasts. As you can expect this presented an opportunity to the greedy opportunists, and so disputes and fights broke out over territory. It took a lot of time for these conflicts to be calmed.
However, just as this problem was addressed another bomb dropped. Natural disasters from hurricanes to floods to volcanic eruptions started hitting non stop one after the other. One truly apocalyptic event was when a tornado met a volcano. Mother Nature had gone completely nuts unleashing another round of destruction.
With further research, Scientists discovered that the deaths of the Demonic beasts from the Abyss had introduced special energies and elements into the earths atmosphere and now those energies were rapidly growing in quantity, this in turn was throwing the laws of nature into disorder.
Mass casualties were caused due to this and then came the even scarier part. Scientists found that the earth's continents had started moving and were getting closer and closer and they would soon collide into each other. There had always been geographic theories that had stated that once upon a time millions of years ago, the earth initially only had one large landmass and the ocean, they believed that once upon a time the earth originally had these elements and energies but some where along the line at some time they had been all but completely eradicated. But now they had been reintroduced and right now it looked like the planet was reverting to that original primal form. With that level of change on the way, if they thought Gaia was going crazy no, they should just wait a little longer and she would soon go completely haywire.
And true to the prediction the continents continued to grow closer and closer to each other. The natural disasters started getting even worse and humans had to retreat once again to outer space with the Arks to flee the cataclysm that was to come.
Finally years later, the continents merged and a new massive landmass was borne. When the laws governing the forces of nature were stable and things were considered safe the Arks once again descended. Humans stepped foot unto this new continent which was now named 'Sanctuary'. The world they used to know had changed, and it didn't take long for them to realize that it had done so in more ways than one.
In this new world everything was considered wilderness and all the creatures along with the flora and fauna that had survived through the apocalypse seemed to have evolved after absorbing the strange magical energy that was now abundant in the atmosphere. Thanks to this they had grown more massive in size and had gotten more powerful and even though they weren't as terrifying as the beasts of the Abyss, they were still underway. Humans had to fight these new advanced beasts to claim some territory.
All the glorious cities and structures that once covered the earth were no more, all that was left were ruins and humanity would have to start over if were to have a home in this new world. Luckily, all the knowledge of humanity's advanced technology was preserved and with this humans began to rebuild.
However, only a few years later something else appeared, just like animals that had evolved after absorbing the strange magical energy in the atmosphere humans also began to evolve. Some of these newly evolved humans that had mutated in a bad way ended up with deformities in their body structures like growing an extra leg or an arm in their stomach instead of side and so on. As for those that evolved nicely started to develop special powers that could manipulate the different elements of nature; fire, water, ice, wind, metal, lightning, plants, some could even transform into ferocious beasts. this occurrence caused a lot of confusion for a time and the governments had to isolate all those with the deformities in their physique, it was a while before everything calmed down and the new humans could be understood. Apparently these mutations in people somehow granted them the ability to control a special energy in their bodies and the atmosphere therefore granting them their abilities. From the old stories of magicians in books these people were given the nickname Mages, and even though people were very much afraid of them when they appeared nothing could be done about it as evolution could not be stopped. Then the next worst thing happened.
Like the old saying 'when it rains it pours'. Just as the mages were appearing one after another, it happened. Out of nowhere a black spatial crack appeared and out of this crack came the continuation of the nightmare. Large numbers of Demonic beasts began to pour out into our world once again. That's right somehow another portal had been opened linking our world to the Abyss once again and once more chaos descended as the apocalypse resumed.
Death and destruction was everywhere and humans were having difficulties retreating to the Arks and using them to escape this predicament, this was because the skies were no longer clear and safe thanks to the flying beasts, and anytime any thing including the Arks were launched the would be madly attacked and brought down by the beasts. Despair started setting in, it was at this time that the mages stepped forward and started fighting back.
The Mages, these powerful humans that controlled terrifying world shaking supernatural powers began to fight back and they realized that it was much easier for the beasts of the abyss to be killed if it was done by the mages with their special abilities. This was attributed to one thing the magical power and after testing it, it was proven true. Weapons made from materials that had magic energy in them allowed people to kill the demonic beasts. This was it, this was the push humanity needed to initiate their counter attack. With the mages and their special weapons the humans were able to kill the invading abyss creatures, even though even more catastrophic losses were incurred in this campaign the portal was finally destroyed and the crack closed. It had been fifty years since the gate to the Abyss was first opened and now humans could finally awaken from the nightmare.
Earth had suffered devastating losses in this apocalypse and the population had dropped drastically. Before the first invasion by the demonic beasts there were over seven billion people on earth but now there were only a little less than two billion people left.
Humanity had never faced such a blow before, but finally thanks to the mages humans could finally recover and start to climb back up the food chain.
Since then, every once in a while a new spatial crack which humans began to call Black gates would open and the mages would be deployed to handle the threats. Just like that the years past.
Thanks to the ever growing advanced technology almost every time a new Black gate opened it would be detected and closed. If ever there were gates that were not closed it was because they appeared in places humans could not access or they somehow appeared in a place that just happened to be elusive.
