Chapter 12 - Chapter 12: Calculations & Unseen Threads

Desmond had been playing defense for too long.

For weeks, he had been moving through this world, reacting to things instead of controlling them. He had let himself forget the advantage he had—his knowledge of Twilight.

That changed today.

Because if there was one thing he knew for certain, it was that this story wasn't the same anymore.

The Weight of Knowledge

Lying in bed, Desmond stared at the ceiling, running through everything he knew.

He remembered the books. He knew what was supposed to happen.

But the problem was… it wasn't happening the same way.

He existed. That alone changed everything. Elias, his trainer, wasn't in the original story. Who was he really? The werewolves had saved him—but why? They weren't supposed to care about random humans. And then there was his anomaly status. He wasn't a normal human. He wasn't a werewolf. He wasn't a vampire. What was he?

Something was happening beneath the surface. Pieces were moving, and he wasn't the one moving them.

That needed to change.

New Priorities

The next morning, Desmond arrived at his training session with a different mindset.

Elias was already waiting for him, leaning against a tree. "You're early today."

Desmond didn't waste time. "You said I was an anomaly. What exactly did you mean?"

Elias's smirk faded slightly. "You're not just a human. That much is obvious. Your body, your mind, the way you adapt—it's not normal."

Desmond already knew that. But why was he like this?

Did it have to do with where he came from? The void?

That question burned in his mind, but he wasn't about to ask Elias that yet. Instead, he nodded. "Then I need to control it."

Elias raised a brow. "You already fight better than most. What more do you want?"

"Everything."

Elias chuckled, shaking his head. "You're too ambitious for your own good."

Desmond didn't respond. He just clenched his fists and stepped forward.

He wasn't going to be weak. Not in this world.

Observation & Awareness

After training, Desmond started noticing things he had ignored before.

Like how the wolves weren't just protecting him. They were watching him.

Ever since they saved him, he had felt eyes on him, and now he was sure—it wasn't a coincidence. They were keeping track of him.

Why?

And then there was Elias—who knew way too much about supernatural creatures. He acted like just another mentor, but Desmond wasn't stupid. Elias knew more than he was letting on.

Everything was connected.

Desmond wasn't just another human caught in the middle of vampires and werewolves.

He was a factor they hadn't accounted for.

And that made him dangerous.

A New Path Forward

Sitting alone that night, Desmond made a decision.

No more playing defense. No more waiting for things to happen.

He had knowledge of this world. He had strength. And now, he was going to use them.

Because if there was one thing he knew about Twilight…

It was that those who didn't adapt—died.
