The whistle blew as Matsukawa served the ball. It was a simple and normal serve. The ball flew into Karasuno's court as Daichi got into form and called out, "Leave it to me." He easily picked up the serve and sent it cleanly to Kageyama. Kageyama studied the ball. At the corner of his eyes, he could see Hinata watching the ball, an aura oozing out of him—silently screaming at him to set the ball to him. Kageyama momentarily forgot everything as his focus solely went to setting the ball to his ACE...Tch...Hinata as perfectly as possible. The ball left his fingertips as he cleanly, almost perfectly, set it to Hinata. The ball flew in a beautiful arc.
Hinata looked at the ball with his utmost focus. He adjusted his form. There wasn't much to adjust as Kageyama had set the ball almost perfectly. Hinata thought that's why he would be the perfect partner. He took a few steps, planted his feet, and boom—he jumped. No, he flew.
The people watching—whether audience, opponents, or his own teammates—could see an imaginary set of wings attached to his arms.
The opponents, true to being one of the top four in the prefecture, didn't let it distract them as a three-man block came up to stop him.
Hinata could have done an out-of-bounds or dip shot, but he wanted to bring them down from their high horse.
[Spike: Power Shot]
He brought all the momentum through his arms as he connected with the ball. If you stopped time, you could see the ball rippling due to the sheer power behind the spike.
The ball shot through with such force that the blockers' hands flailed, but the ball kept going without breaking speed or momentum, bouncing off the floor and shooting toward the roof. It was so fast and powerful that nobody could react—not even their libero.
The blocker who took the brute force winced as his hand shook, a red mark visibly forming on his skin.
There was pin-drop silence on the floor. The umpire even forgot to whistle and give the score. Karasuno expected this somewhat, but they were still shocked—this was a top-four school in the prefecture, after all.
"What the hell was that?!" one of the Aoba Johsai players muttered, eyes wide in disbelief.
"No way... There's no way he just did that! He's shorter than me!" Kindaichi blurted out, his jaw slack.
On the sidelines, some of the audience members were equally in awe.
"Did you see that?! That ball practically disappeared!"
"I almost feel bad for the blockers. Their hands are probably still shaking!"
"That kid... Is he even human?"
Even Matsukawa, the server, flexed his fingers, feeling an odd numbness as he muttered, "Damn, did we just get hit by a cannonball?"
All Kageyama was thinking was how much he wished to continue setting to Hinata. He would never hold him back.
Tsukishima adjusted his glasses, clicking his tongue. "Tch. Annoying as always."
Yamaguchi whispered, "That was... crazy."
On the Aoba Johsai side, the opposing team members whispered amongst themselves, trying to process what just happened.
"How did he even get that high?"
"That was like something out of a movie..."
"We've faced strong spikers before, but this is different."
Their coach, though attempting to remain composed, was sure this was better than Ushiwaka. If Oikawa were here, he would agree.
"This isn't just raw power. This is controlled, trained, refined. That first-year is dangerous," he murmured to himself, eyes narrowing.
The audience, meanwhile, was in chaos, realizing just how much of a threat this shorty was. They were scared for their team.
"Are you sure this is Karasuno?" one student whispered to another.
"Forget Karasuno, is that really a first-year?!"
"If we don't stop that monster now, we're going to be humiliated."
The Karasuno bench was just as excited, Sugawara practically jumping out of his seat. "Hinata, you monster! Do it again!"
Tanaka, grinning wildly, slapped his knee. "That's my little crow! They'll never see it coming!"
The referee finally snapped out of his daze, blew the whistle, and announced the score.
The Aoba Johsai coach quickly called for a timeout. The team huddled together as he spoke in a calm yet firm tone, "This is just a small setback. We've faced Ushiwaka before; we'll use the same strategy on this guy." Though his words were confident, a small bead of sweat rolled down his brow, betraying the slight unease he felt.
The players gathered themselves, trying to shake off the shock. Kindaichi clenched his fist. "We won't let him do that again."
Matsukawa nodded. "Yeah, we'll shut him down."
Shigeru, who had been quiet the entire time, exhaled. "I don't know, guys... I think we might have woken up something terrifying."
Hinata, walking back to his side of the court, smirked slightly. He knew this was only the beginning. If they thought they could stop him with a simple strategy, they were in for a rude awakening.
The match was only just beginning.
