Chapter 12 - Chapter 12: Secret alliances

"I'm not getting divorced from my husband." Devra announced, looking her grandfather dead in his eyes.

"You would rather live in a miserable marriage than grant me awish which is more to your benefit than it is to mine?" Tobias was unable to hide his shock. He knew there was no love lost between he and Devra but he didyteslize just how much she hated him until this moment.

"I'm not divorcing my husband just because you now feel threatened by him. When I begged not to marry him my cries fell on deaf ears, when I wanted a divorce you threatened me all because he served your purpose in punishing me." Devra said heatedly.

"Devra-" Tobias began but she cut him off.

"No, I'm not going to be your puppet anymore. I'm not getting divorced because you command it grandpa. If you feel threatened by my husband then you find another way to deal with your problem and not drag me into it." Devra roared.

Tobias remained silent as Devra rose from her chair and approached the door.

"And anyways Darion and I have decided to give our marriage another shot so this was an absolute waste of time." She added before she opened the door.

"I will disinherit you Devra. I will take away that precious company of yours and you know me, you know I'll do it." Tobias threatened, the caring facade finally pulled off.

Here he was, this was the man Devra knew.

"You can keep your inheritance Tobias, I don't need it." She shrugged before she slammed the door shut behind her. She hurried away as she was already late for her meeting but as she walked, it felt like a huge weight had been lifted off her shoulders.

She had finally given up the last bargaining chip her grandfather held over her. She didn't need his inheritance, she was doing pretty well without it.

If she had any doubts about staying with Darion before, she was now resolved and determined to stick with him just to get on Tobias' nerves and thwart his plans.

Mean while Gary remained in Tobias' office brooding. The old man had thought himself so clever yet his plan had gone no further than his own attempts.

"Is that the solid plan you said you had?" Gary couldn't help but taunt the old man.

"This is a momentary set back but trust that she will be divorcing that man and handing over that company to me." Tobias sneered.

"How does her relationship with her husband have to do with anything?" Gary inquired.

"How could you be so short sighted Gary." Tobias bit out.

"The man clearly wields power now and it is no secret that he hates us. Two of them being together will make acquiring the company even harder." He explained to his dumb witted grandson.

Gary remained silent and without another word, he left Tobias' office.

The old man had lost his edge.

Gary had to take matters into his own hands before things escalated.

And so that was how Gary found himself standing in Stephan's office in the Gagarin family house.

"To what do I owe the pleasure of a visit from a Hay?" Stephan eyed Gary skeptically.

"I have an offer for you." Gary announced and Stephan guffawed.

"What do you possibly have to offer me?" Stephan asked while leaning forward in his chair, clearly interested and amused by the young Hay.

"Is this one of Tobias' games?" Stephan inquired when Gary remained silent.

Gary simply extended the file in his hand to Stephan who glanced from the file to Gary skeptically for a moment before taking the file.

Gary watched in satisfaction as Stephan scanned the file and a string of emotions flashed on his face, ranging from suprise and then settling on rage.

"What is the meaning of this?" Stephan growled, slamming the file shut.

"Just what the file clearly stated Stephan." Gary said calmly, taking a seat in front of the old man.

"What does Tobias want? I have nothing to do with him or his empires." Stephan was beyond puzzled. The Gagarin's and the Hay's weren't exactly friends but they weren't enemies either.

"You still don't get it do you? Tobias doesn't know about this file, neither does he know I'm here." Gary admitted.

"This is your doing?" Stephan looked at the young Hay in shock.

Tobias had really succeeded in producing an heir who was even more ruthless than him.

"How did you get this?" Stephan asked.

"That's not important, what's important is what I will do with it." Gary pointed out.

Stephan remained silent and Gary knew he had the man right where he wanted him.

The file had enough incriminating evidence to sink the Gagarin family empire to the ground and Gary was proud of himself for obtaining the file all on his own. It had been no small feat and he had to call in a good number of favours but he had done it and he knew his plan wouldn't fail.

"What do you want?" Stephan finally asked.

"Now you are asking the right questions." Gary smiled at the man.

"All I require is for you to disrupt operations in Helios industries." Gary told the man.

"Isn't that Devra's company? Why would you want to do that?" The man asked.

"It doesn't matter and you don't require an explanation. It is a simple enough task and I know a man of your ilk can achieve it without any hassle." Gary replied.

"That's all you require of me? To disrupt Devra's company?" Stephan asked sceptically and Gary nodded.

"And if I do this you will hand over all copies of this file." Stephan bargained and Gary smirked.

"Deal." He held his hand out to the older man.

The man hesitated for only a moment before he sealed their deal with a handshake.
