Chapter 1040 - Chapter 1039 – The Cracking Core

The Empire was dying.

Not by sword, nor rebellion, nor the subtle poison of political deceit—no, this was something far more insidious. This was not a war that Kael could manipulate or control. This was a force far older, far deeper, and far more primal than the mechanics of empire, war, or even magic. This was the collapse of existence itself. The second beat of the Heart of Singularity had come, and its pulse was spreading through the fabric of the universe like a disease, eroding everything it touched.

Kael had felt it the moment the pulse began. At first, it had been a whisper, barely perceptible—an undercurrent beneath the world's usual hum. It had settled in the depths of his chest, a presence that could not be ignored. The stars above had shifted, bending to an unseen will, and the air had become thicker, charged with something that could not be defined. Time itself, the one thing Kael had always believed he could bend to his will, had begun to fray at the edges.

And now, the cracks were visible.

Kael sat at his desk, the weight of the world heavy in the lines of his shoulders. The latest reports of skirmishes in the eastern provinces lay spread out before him—small uprisings of no consequence in the grand scheme of things. But as his fingers traced the edges of the parchment, a sudden chill swept through the room. The air thickened, as if the very walls of his sanctum were closing in on him.

It began as a pressure on his chest, faint but undeniable. The pulse of the Heart of Singularity reverberated through him, stronger this time. It was not just a sound; it was a sensation, a deep vibration that rattled his bones. His heart beat faster in response, an instinctual reaction, as if his body knew what his mind could not fully comprehend. Kael glanced up, his gaze sharp and calculating, but the room appeared unchanged. The warm glow of the fire in the hearth danced, the rustling of the papers on his desk the only sounds.

And then, it happened.

Aeren, his trusted lieutenant and general, stood beside him, a scroll of fresh reports in his hands. Their eyes met for a moment—nothing unusual in that. But as Kael blinked, something in Aeren's form wavered, like an image caught in the ripples of disturbed water. And then, as though the world itself had erased him, Aeren simply… disappeared. No sound, no warning. He was there one moment, and gone the next, leaving only the faintest shimmer in the air where he had stood.

For a moment, Kael froze, his mind trying to process what he had just witnessed. He rose from his chair, his hand trembling as it reached for the empty space where Aeren had been. His breath caught in his throat, the room suddenly feeling colder, as though something unspeakable had just happened.

"Aeren?" Kael whispered, his voice a harsh rasp, though he already knew the answer. There was no response, only silence. A deep, unsettling silence that seemed to stretch on for eternity.

No. This was not right. This was not possible.

He looked around, as if the room itself could offer an explanation, but there was none. His mind, sharp and capable, struggled to understand the impossible. This was beyond anything Kael had ever encountered. There was no magic here, no curse, no illusion that could explain what he had just witnessed. Aeren had been erased. And whatever had done it was far outside Kael's control.

A whisper of dread curled in his gut.

Kael stormed out of the room, his steps echoing in the hollow corridors of the palace. His mind raced, his thoughts a blur of theories and calculations, but none of them made sense. The further he moved through the palace, the more the weight in the air seemed to increase, as though the very atmosphere itself was being warped. He passed courtiers and servants, but they moved with the same unnatural tension, avoiding his gaze as if they were afraid to acknowledge the unseen force that pressed upon them all.

He could feel it now—the pulse, deep within the fabric of reality, thrumming like a slow drumbeat. It was growing stronger, more insistent. Something was changing. The universe itself was on the verge of collapse.

As he passed through the central courtyard, the landscape outside seemed to ripple, like a mirage in a desert. The trees that had once stood tall and proud now flickered, their forms distorting, leaves shimmering like smoke. The fountains, once clear and pristine, now gurgled with water that seemed to defy the laws of nature, twisting into shapes that Kael could not comprehend.

It was as though reality itself was unraveling. And it was happening far faster than he could process.

He entered the grand chamber of his advisors. They were gathered around the war table, as always, but this time there was an unmistakable tension in the air. Seraphina, the Empress, was the first to speak, her voice a whisper of fear.

"Kael… you felt it too, didn't you?" Her words hung heavy in the air.

He nodded, his jaw clenched tight. "Aeren… he vanished. Right in front of me. No warning. Like he was erased."

Seraphina's eyes were dark with fear, but she did not hesitate. "It's happening everywhere. People are disappearing. Entire cities… gone. The world itself is beginning to erode."

Elara, ever the pragmatist, added in a voice that was uncharacteristically quiet, "It's not just the cities. It's individuals. Allies, friends—entire armies. They are being pulled from existence, as if the very fabric of reality is… unweaving."

Kael's eyes narrowed as he processed the words. "So it's not just Aeren. It's happening to everyone."

"This is no ordinary force," Seraphina continued, her voice barely audible, "It's not just magic. It's something… else. A presence that is devouring everything we've built. Time, space, matter—all of it is fading. The laws of the world no longer apply."

"Is it the Singularity?" Kael whispered, though the words tasted like ash in his mouth. The Singularity was an ancient force, one that Kael had only heard of in passing—a primordial entity that defied all understanding. Its power was said to reshape the very foundation of reality. If it had awakened…

"It's not just a force," Selene spoke up, her voice grave. "It's a presence. It's consuming everything, erasing all the boundaries we've taken for granted. And we're helpless to stop it. It's too vast, too… unknowable."

Kael's mind reeled, but his resolve hardened. He had faced gods, armies, conspiracies, and magic of unimaginable power. He had manipulated fate itself to reach this point, to stand as the ruler of the Empire. He had conquered the heavens and bent them to his will.

But this? This was something beyond his reach. He could feel the pulse of the Singularity in his bones, hear it thrumming beneath his skin. The world itself was cracking.

No.

Kael's fists clenched, and a cold determination filled his eyes. "I will not let this destroy everything I've built. Not my Empire. Not my world. Not my reign."

Seraphina's gaze met his, a flicker of shared understanding passing between them. "You cannot fight it, Kael. You cannot control it."

Kael did not respond, but deep within his chest, the pulse of the Singularity beat again. The thought gnawed at him—the realization that this was not a force to be fought or manipulated. It was the end. The end of everything.

That night, Kael stood alone in the courtyard, staring at the stars. They had once been his guides, his instruments in the game of power he had played for so long. But now, they had shifted. They moved, drifting, colliding, re-aligning in patterns Kael could not fathom.

The air was thick with the weight of the universe unraveling. A few days ago, Kael might have laughed at the idea that something as abstract as the Singularity could undo him. But now, with Aeren gone and the world trembling around him, Kael understood.

It was bigger than him. Bigger than the Empire. Bigger than even the gods.

The rumble of distant thunder echoed through the night, and the stars flickered once more, some vanishing entirely. The ground beneath Kael's feet trembled, as though the earth itself was on the verge of collapse.

The Heart of Singularity beat again.

And Kael, once the master of everything, stood alone, facing a force that could erase him, his Empire, and the world itself.

The core of reality was cracking.
