Chapter 2 - Chapter 2: A Bond Forged in ruin

#### Scene 1: *A Broken Boy in the Shadows*

It had been weeks since Alex was abandoned. Each passing day blurred into the next, a cycle of scavenging, hiding, and barely surviving. The streets of Eryndor's lower district were unkind to a child, especially one so small and weak. Alex's once bright, curious eyes had dulled, replaced by the hollow gaze of a boy who had seen the cruelest side of the world.

Clutching the remnants of a bread crust he had stolen from a marketplace, Alex sat curled up in the corner of an alley. His clothes were tattered, his body thin and frail. The cold gnawed at his skin, the hunger carving sharp edges into his soul. He watched people pass by, their faces blank, eyes averted as though ignoring him would make him disappear.

He had learned quickly—no one would help. Sympathy was a luxury he couldn't afford, and the world had none to spare. His once timid heart was now hardened by survival. But still, deep down, a tiny flicker of hope remained, refusing to die.

#### Scene 2: *Ellie's Despair*

Ellie's journey through the city had been no kinder. Cast out from her family's mansion, she stumbled through the unfamiliar streets with nothing but her locket and the clothes on her back. Her fine dress, once a symbol of her status, was now frayed and dirty, the delicate lace torn from the harshness of her new reality.

She had knocked on doors, begged for help, but every time, she was met with closed shutters and cold stares. To the world, she was just another orphan—a reminder of misfortune no one wanted to see.

Her uncle, Sebastian, had ensured that no one in their former social circle would come to her aid. His grip on her family's wealth was absolute, his reach extending far beyond her understanding. She had heard whispers from kind strangers—rumors of how Sebastian had staged the downfall, of how her parents' death was not an accident but orchestrated by the very man now reveling in their fortune.

She collapsed on the steps of an abandoned building, her hands trembling as she clutched the locket close to her chest. Her parents' smiling faces stared back at her, frozen in time within the small picture. Tears streaked her face as she whispered, "Mama… Papa… what am I supposed to do?"

#### Scene 3: *Two Lives Collide*

Fate brought Alex and Ellie together on a cold autumn evening. Alex, desperate and hungry, had been scavenging through trash bins near the outskirts of the city when he saw her. She sat slumped against the wall of an abandoned house, her head resting on her knees. She looked as lost and broken as he felt.

He hesitated at first—wary of strangers after weeks of harsh lessons on the streets. But there was something about her, something in the way she cradled that locket like it was the only thing holding her together, that struck a chord deep within him.

Quietly, he approached, his small feet barely making a sound. "Are you… okay?" he asked, his voice hoarse from disuse.

Ellie lifted her head, startled by the sudden presence. Her eyes, red from crying, met his. For a moment, neither of them spoke. It was as though they recognized something in each other—a shared pain, a shared loss.

"No," she replied simply, her voice barely above a whisper. "Are you?"

Alex shook his head. "No."

They didn't need to say more. In that moment, two broken souls found solace in each other's company. Together, they entered the abandoned house—little more than a decaying structure with creaking floorboards and shattered windows. But to them, it was a refuge, a place where the world couldn't touch them.

That night, as they huddled together for warmth, Ellie shared her last piece of bread with Alex. They spoke in whispers, sharing fragments of their stories, their pain, and their fears.

By the dim light of the moon streaming through the broken roof, they made a promise:

"We'll survive together. No matter what."

It wasn't much, but it was enough. For the first time in weeks, Alex felt a glimmer of hope—not for himself, but for the two of them.
