Chapter 6 - Chapter 6: Deadly Accusations

Dawn broke over Sterling Mansion with deceptive serenity, golden light filtering through grand windows, illuminating hallways once cloaked in darkness. Yet beneath this tranquil facade lay whispers of unrest and suspicion. Before morning could fully settle, urgent voices echoed down corridors, pulling Sienna from restless dreams.

"Fourth Young Madam," a sharp voice commanded from outside her chamber door. "Patriarch Augustus summons you immediately."

She dressed swiftly, her thoughts churning fiercely. Augustus rarely summoned anyone so urgently—this was no ordinary meeting. Concealing both the mysterious USB and the Sterling key securely within her gown, Sienna braced herself, slipping silver needles deftly into her sleeve. Prepared for any danger that awaited.

Entering the mansion's vast hall, the scene before her froze her blood. A lifeless figure lay sprawled across the marble floor, eyes wide in a permanent expression of shock—Dr. Liang, Augustus Sterling's personal physician, had died violently overnight.

Augustus stood stiffly nearby, his usually composed face twisted in quiet fury. Beside him, Josephine Sterling cast accusing eyes toward Sienna, lips curled into a cold sneer.

"Fourth Young Madam, care to explain?" Josephine asked icily, gesturing dramatically toward the body.

Sienna's eyes narrowed sharply, voice icy calm. "Explain what, exactly?"

Josephine's expression hardened cruelly. "Dr. Liang's body shows signs of death by acupuncture—your specialty, isn't it?"

Gasps filled the hall, each accusation piercing deeper than the needles she carried. Yet, Sienna refused to be intimidated, meeting Josephine's venomous gaze steadily. "If that's your claim, allow me to prove my innocence."

Josephine scoffed mockingly. "How? With more lies?"

"Facts," Sienna replied simply, stepping forward decisively toward the corpse. "Acupuncture leaves distinct marks, and the position of needles can confirm intention. Let the evidence speak clearly."

Without hesitation, she knelt gracefully beside Dr. Liang's body, examining the corpse meticulously. Augustus's cold stare never wavered, silently demanding the truth.

She lifted the physician's hand gently, pressing expertly against specific points on his wrist and fingers. Within moments, the limp hand jerked grotesquely, fingers twitching visibly, eliciting shocked cries from onlookers.

"How is this possible?" Augustus's voice sharpened with sudden suspicion.

"Death by acupuncture paralysis leaves the nerves inactive. The victim cannot move postmortem, even involuntarily," Sienna explained clearly. "This man died another way entirely—he was poisoned first, the acupuncture marks merely a distraction."

Murmurs rippled through the gathered elders, confusion replacing accusation. Augustus's sharp gaze intensified. "Who would dare poison my physician?"

"Someone who knew suspicion would fall upon me," Sienna replied calmly, her gaze shifting pointedly toward Josephine. "Someone eager to discredit the newest member of your family."

Josephine's eyes widened briefly before narrowing dangerously. "You dare—!"

"Enough," Augustus's voice thundered suddenly, silencing everyone instantly. He turned fiercely toward Josephine, suspicion clearly ignited. "Explain yourself, Josephine."

Josephine faltered, briefly, panic flickering beneath her carefully maintained facade. Before she could speak, a familiar voice rang through the hall, cool yet commanding.

"I believe further investigation is necessary." Silas appeared at the hall's entrance, his composed demeanor masking the tense lines around his eyes. He moved silently toward Sienna, positioning himself protectively at her side. "Accusing my wife without concrete proof tarnishes our family's honor. We cannot afford to act recklessly."

Augustus studied his grandson coldly. "And who do you suggest leads this investigation, Silas?"

"I will," Silas replied smoothly, his voice calm yet edged with authority. "After all, the murder occurred under my roof. I have every reason to uncover the truth."

Augustus hesitated momentarily, then gave a curt nod. "Very well. But mark my words, if either of you attempts deception, there will be severe consequences."

Silas inclined his head respectfully. "Understood."

Moments later, alone in a secluded chamber, Sienna faced Silas directly, suspicion still simmering between them despite their public alliance.

"Why defend me?" she asked bluntly. "Surely you suspect me as well."

He regarded her steadily, eyes unreadable yet piercing. "Your skills are far subtler than a crude murder like this. Besides," he added softly, stepping closer, "you hold secrets too valuable to risk exposure so clumsily."

Her eyes narrowed cautiously. "Secrets?"

His gaze sharpened, voice lowering dangerously. "The USB you discovered last night, for instance."

She stiffened, startled by his knowledge, fingers reflexively brushing her sleeve where it remained concealed. "How—"

He smiled faintly, amusement mingling with danger. "I pay attention, Sienna. Perhaps too closely."

She forced composure, voice steady. "And what exactly do you intend to do about it?"

Silas stepped closer still, trapping her gently yet firmly against the wall, his presence dominating yet disturbingly comforting. His breath brushed her ear softly, voice a dark whisper. "I suggest cooperation. There are forces within this family far deadlier than Josephine or Spencer."

Her heart thundered at his closeness, pulse quickening dangerously. Yet caution kept her grounded. "Including you?"

He smiled enigmatically, fingertips brushing lightly against her cheek. "Especially me."

Before she could respond, a swift knock echoed sharply through the chamber door. A servant's voice called urgently from outside. "Fourth Master, Patriarch Augustus requests your immediate presence. It's urgent."

Silas withdrew slowly, his gaze lingering meaningfully. "Think carefully, Sienna. We're stronger together."

As he disappeared through the doorway, Sienna exhaled shakily, the ghostly heat of his touch still lingering on her skin. She retrieved the USB carefully, realizing it was more crucial now than ever to unlock its secrets swiftly.

Inserting it into a discreet computer terminal in the corner, encrypted files flashed across the screen, her heart racing fiercely at the sight. Dozens of confidential medical records appeared—all belonging to Silas Sterling. Her breath caught sharply as her own name appeared prominently beside his, accompanied by a disturbing note in her master's handwriting:

"Patient S.S.: Treatment ongoing—prognosis grim without immediate intervention by Sienna."

Her blood ran cold. Had her master predicted all of this? Was her presence here truly meant to save Silas—or destroy him?

In the distance, she heard urgent voices, Silas's name mentioned repeatedly in hushed tones. Something else had occurred—something grave enough to threaten them both.

Silently, she hid the USB once more, resolution firming in her heart. Silas Sterling was either her greatest enemy or most dangerous ally. And as she stepped forward, moving swiftly toward the new crisis awaiting her, she knew the answer would soon become clear—whether in bloodshed or revelation.

Tonight, the Sterling family's darkest secrets would begin to unravel, and she intended to be at the center of the storm.
