Chapter 8 - Little rats

As Duncan and Bella walked deeper into the depth of mid section, the night continued to get darker and colder.

Duncan shivered. "I think it is best we reschedule our little adventure."

Bella laughed. "I never knew that you are such a coward little Danny."

"Co-Coward? I am just pointing out a logical fact. The coldness of the night might send us to the afterlife before even we are able to steal a penny."

Bella's voice became sarcastic. "Oh my, little Danny has become the logical thinker, the thinker of logic, the one that thinks logically."

Duncan's voice adapted a similar sarcastic tone. "Oh please, dear lady. Your generosity knows no bounds but I must refuse your honorable titles as they are beyond my humble status."

There was a stretch of silence and then both Duncan and Bella exploded with laughter.

Bella smiled as she looked at Duncan. "You look good when you smile. You should probably laugh regularly."

Duncan froze when he heard the complement and replied sheepishly. "Thank you."

Bella patted Duncan's right shoulder. "Don't let this stupid world wipe the charming smile on your face. The very fact that we are still standing here proves that we are survivors to boot. Each day we live to see the coming of dawn and the fall of dusk, we prove to the world that it will have to work like hell just to put an end to our measly existence."

Duncan looked surprised by Bella's word, it took some time to let the words sink in. "Never knew you were such a motivational speaker."

"A motivational speaker? This is just one of many random busts in epiphany that my seed sized brain managed to produce."

Duncan blinked incredulously. "I will pretend like I have not heard the seed sized brain part."

"Thanks."

"You are welcome." Duncan replied evenly.

There was a stretch of silence between Duncan and Bella as they continued heading towards the depth of the mid section.

The silence was destroyed by Bella's voice. "Would you look at that?"

"Look at what?"

Bella turned to Duncan. "Oh. There is a haunted house to our right."

Duncan asked in disbelief evident in his voice. "Haunted?"

"Yep. Unless you have another way to describe an old three story house with rusted gates and a chilling sense of lifelessness."

A shudder ran through Duncan's body. "We should probably keep moving."

"Nah. We already found the location to sweep clean, why leave?"

Duncan had a bad premonition. "And where is that?"

"Where else other than the haunted house."

Duncan inhaled in a mouthful of air. "I think that is a bad idea."

"No, it is actually a good idea. The house appearance would probably scare off most people, that means that only the bravest could enter the house. This fact raises the chances of us finding something of value. Sure the chances are not high but they are at least not zero. "

A thought flashed in Duncan's mind.

Just the type of adventure I am looking for.

Duncan sighed. "Then what are we waiting for?"

Bella chuckled. "That is more like it."

With little effort Bella grabbed Duncan by the hand and dragged him towards the rusted gate of the haunted house. Duncan has become somewhat used to being dragged around by Bella. Despite the rough experience that accompanied whenever he was dragged around, he still had to admit that it was a more convenient way of travel for a blind person than relying solely on the wooden stick that he has become accustomed with for years.

As Bella pushed the rusted open, an unsettling sound of metal against metal filled the night that made Duncan tense. Without wasting anytime Bella crossed the gate and made her way towards the door of the haunted house, dragging Duncan with her.

As Bella reached the door of the haunted house, she stopped and turned to face Duncan. "Are you ready?"

Duncan whispered. "As ready as a dead man could ever be. We should probably sneak in quietly to make sure that–"

BAM!

Bella did not what for Duncan to finish his sentence and just smashed the old door open with one of her legs. The sound caused by the commotion was loud enough to fill the whole haunted house.

Dust assaulted Duncan's nose, with a shaky voice Duncan questioned. "What the hell did you just do?"

"Opened the door."

"That did not feel like you were opening the door, it felt like you smashed the whole thing off its hinge." Duncan retorted.

"Which resulted to an open door." Bella's voice was filled with indifference.

Duncan gritted his teeth. "You probably just announced our presence to the whole household if not to the entire neighborhood."

Bella shrugged. "I don't think anyone in their right mind would live in such a house. As for the neighborhood, we just have to make sure that we swipe the place clean before anyone finds us."

"That is easier said than done." Duncan grumbled.

"You seem to forget that you actually have someone who can see."

"Are you indirectly calling me a liability?" Duncan narrowed his eyes as he faced Bella with a cold expression.

The layer of indifference cracked when Bella saw Duncan's current expression, she then let out a nervous chuckle. "What? No, I did not mean it like that. I was just trying to say that we make such a team. We should probably call ourselves 'the blind and the seer'."

Duncan scratched his head awkwardly. "Oh, Sorry about that. It is just that since childhood I had to endure many things just because of the fact that I was just a little different from others. The only one other than my parents who has ever treated me in such a loving manner was my sister. So it just happened that your statement reminded me of what I have lost."

Bella patted Duncan's shoulder. "We will find your sister alright but now we have a heist to attempt."

Duncan squared his shoulders as he walked into the haunted house with Bella acting as his guide.
