Time rewound itself to ten minutes earlier.
Inside the shrine's traditional room, the hazy afternoon sunlight filtered softly through the paper windows. A blonde girl dressed in a shrine maiden outfit lay curled up on the tatami mat. Six fluffy golden fox tails wrapped snugly around her body, forming a warm, cozy nest of fur.
Kunou was taking her afternoon nap.
It was a daily ritual she never skipped.
As the young mistress of Yasaka Shrine, Kunou's daily routine was simple. Every morning and afternoon, she patrolled the mountain once. Before her morning patrol, she would always train in Yōjutsu with her mother.
After returning, she'd have lunch, rest for a bit, then nap. When she woke up, she'd go on her second patrol, and by the time she returned, it would be just about time for dinner.
Every day was more or less the same. Rarely did anything change.
Ding-a-ling~ Ding-a-ling~
As if triggered at a pre-set time, the alarm clock placed in the corner of the room suddenly rang out. Its shrill, piercing sound made the blonde girl's brows knit together.
Getting jolted awake mid-nap was unpleasant — a universal truth, whether human, beast, old, or young.
Still, Kunou quickly sat up, rubbing her eyes and letting out a long, sleepy yawn.
She cracked her eyes open and glanced at the clock — it was already close to 3:30 PM.
Normally, Kunou didn't need an alarm to wake her. Her mother gave her plenty of time for naps, and the afternoon patrol always started at 3:30. She usually set the alarm for around 3:20, giving herself a ten-minute buffer to straighten her rumpled clothes before heading out — just enough time.
From noon to 3:30, she had a full three and a half hours to nap — more than enough by any standard.
But today was a little different. For some reason, ever since midday, Kunou had felt strangely restless.
Maybe it was because during her morning patrol, she had casually mentioned something about Bokue-nii to her mother — and ever since, she couldn't shake a feeling.
The feeling that Bokue-nii would come today.
There was no evidence. She couldn't explain where the feeling came from. But the little fox girl had an inexplicable certainty in her heart.
And it was precisely that gut instinct that had her tossing and turning ever since lunch.
Would he really come...?
It felt like he would.
But thinking rationally — Bokue-nii had been gone from Kyoto for almost ten years now. He hadn't returned even once in all that time. And there was nothing particularly special about this year either. Maybe... he wouldn't come after all?
No, it didn't feel right — her gut told her he would come.
Little Kunou agonized like that for hours, only managing to fall asleep around 3:00. And just when she finally nodded off, twenty minutes later, the alarm clock went off.
Now, it was time for her afternoon patrol.
"Haaah~"
Another big yawn escaped her. The fox girl twisted nimbly and climbed off the floor, covering her mouth as she slid open the door and headed outside.

At the entrance to the shrine, a familiar figure came into view.
Her mother — beautiful and dignified as always — sat quietly on the wooden steps before the shrine. The overhanging roof shielded her from the harsh afternoon sun, and she gazed out at the courtyard bathed in golden light, lost deep in thought.
"Mother?"
Kunou called out softly without thinking.
Hmm?
Hearing her daughter's voice, Yasaka's body gave a tiny start. She turned her head toward the sound, and a gentle, serene smile blossomed across her stunning face.
"What is it, Kunou? You still look a little sleepy."
"I... I'm fine!"
The fox girl quickly patted her cheeks with both hands, trying her best to look more awake.
"What about you, Mother? Didn't you nap today?"
"Mm."
Yasaka lowered her gaze and answered quietly — but then smiled again.
"I just didn't feel like sleeping today. Kunou, if you're still tired, do you want to rest a bit longer?"
"Mmm~ No need."
Showing remarkable self-discipline, the little fox girl shook her head firmly.
"I have to go patrol the mountain. I can't change the schedule just because I'm tired."
Seeing her daughter's resolve, Yasaka smiled warmly and tenderly.
"Alright, then go ahead. Be careful on the way—"
Before she could finish her sentence, the elegant and composed figure — the Eastern High Commander of Japan's Yōkai world — suddenly stiffened.
She shot to her feet, her gaze fixed toward the north.
Far off on the mountainside, swathes of trees had been flattened, as if a monstrous gust of wind had torn through.
That was—
Yasaka narrowed her eyes slightly. In an instant, she gathered her immense Yōki — the legendary power of the Nine-Tailed Heavenly Fox.
But just as quickly, the gathered power dissipated. Her pink lips parted slightly, and joy flooded her golden eyes almost instantly.
The fierce wind swept over the shrine — and in the roar, she heard a familiar boy's voice.
"That voice..."
Kunou froze for a second — then cried out joyfully.
"It's Bokue-nii! Bokue-nii is back!"
"Yes."
Behind the beautiful woman, nine fox tails swayed gently. She bit her lower lip, but her lips still couldn't help curling upward into a smile.
That voice — there was no mistaking it.
Bokue Keikain had returned.
However, while her mother's heart was filled with nothing but happiness, Kunou's feelings were a bit more complicated.
On the one hand, Bokue-nii really had returned — and that made her genuinely happy.
On the other hand... she still had to go on patrol. If he arrived while she was out and she missed him—
"Go now."
Huh?
Just as Kunou was torn between her duty and her heart, her mother's gentle voice came from beside her.
Kunou looked up — and saw her mother looking down at her with a soft smile.
"If Bokue has returned to Kyoto, he'll surely visit us. But if he hasn't arrived yet, he's probably going home first. Go now — leave early, come back early. You might just catch him when you return."
"But if I miss him..."
The fox girl still hesitated.
Yasaka smiled again, then bent down and ruffled her daughter's hair lovingly.
"Don't worry. If that happens—Mom will stall Bokue-nii for you."
"Really?!"
"Of course. When has Mother ever lied to you?"
"Then... I'm heading out!"
"Be safe~"
❁❁❁❁
Time returned to the present.
Inside the familiar shrine room, the long-separated fox-tailed beauty could no longer contain her longing. She threw her arms around the young man — who had grown much taller and stronger compared to her memories — and held him tightly.
Bokue Keikain sat atop the still-warm tatami mat, faintly carrying the scent of a young maiden. He could feel the slight, instinctive twist of the woman's slender waist against him — and suddenly, a crucial question popped into his mind.
"Yasaka-nee, where's Kunou?"
"She left for her patrol not long before you arrived."
Hearing his question, Yasaka reluctantly loosened her embrace. Bracing her arms against the tatami on either side of the boy's cheeks, her loose kimono gaped wide open at the chest. She gazed down at him eagerly, licking her lips in anticipation.
"She heard your voice too. I'm sure she'll rush back soon. But... I tweaked the mountain paths a little with Yōjutsu just now. That should buy us enough time... to catch up... mm…"
With a sudden, decisive movement, Yasaka pressed herself down against him.
The elegant milf bit her lip to stifle a moan, her slender white throat arching high as she sank down with trembling intensity.
