Chapter 146 - The Beast With A Thousand Voices

Among Keter-class anomalies, SCP-939 - "With Many Voices" was on a completely different level compared to SCP-165 (Greedy Sands) and SCP-940 (Puppet Spiders).

SCP-165's only strength was camouflage—hiding in dunes, making it hard to detect. Its threat came solely from its massive population. Otherwise, it was no different from a regular tick. The paralytic toxin ability Luoshu gained from it was practically useless—he had no plans to bite anyone.

SCP-940's danger lay in parasitism. Once matured to Stage 7, it could hijack human bodies and even utilize the host's intelligence. But before that? Just a regular spider. Infected individuals could still be cured with antiparasitic drugs before Stage 3. Compared to diseases like lymphatic filariasis or brain-eating amoebas, early-stage SCP-940 was barely a threat.

And the parasitism ability? Worthless to Luoshu. Did he really need offspring to possess others?

But SCP-939? Its two abilities were tempting.

Ability 1: AMN-C227 (Memory-Wiping Secretion)

Originally used in Class-C amnestics (memory-erasing drugs).

Later discovered to be a lure pheromone.

People exposed to AMN-C227 would unconsciously seek out its source—SCP-939's nest—when re-exposed.

This was how SCP-939 hunted.

The Foundation banned its use and revised amnestic protocols, switching to Class-H amnestics instead.

If Luoshu gained this ability:

He wouldn't use it for hunting, but as a memory-erasing tool.

Risk:

If exposed during the visit, he might later walk into SCP-939's jaws without realizing it.

Ability 2: Vocal Mimicry (The Thousand Voices)

SCP-939 lacked digestive, circulatory, and respiratory systems.

It couldn't digest food—just stored prey in its throat until regurgitating.

This led to hyper-developed vocal cords, allowing it to perfectly mimic any voice it had heard.

Potential Uses:

SCP-939 only used this for hunting, but Luoshu could exploit it for espionage, deception, or infiltration.

The Containment Unit

SCP-939's unit was high-security:

Airtight Airlock – Required hazmat suits for entry.

Decontamination Chamber – For exit cleansing.

Negative-Pressure Containment – Ensured AMN-C227 couldn't leak out.

(Like isolation wards for infectious diseases.)

Access Levels:

Level 2 for the airlock.

Level 4 for the containment chamber.

For Luoshu:

The Master Key (from Site-17) could bypass all doors.

But AMN-C227 exposure was unavoidable inside.

SCP-055's antimemetic effect would stop SCP-939 from attacking him, but not the pheromone's influence.

No hazmat suit? Big problem.

The Dilemma

Standing outside the observation window, Luoshu stared at the red, eyeless creatures inside.

How do I get in without breathing AMN-C227?

The Foundation wouldn't leave spare suits lying around for unauthorized midnight explorers.

Possible Solutions?

Find a way to neutralize AMN-C227. (Unlikely without research.)

Use SCP-055's effect to block inhalation. (But antimemetics don't stop chemicals.)

Steal a hazmat suit from somewhere else. (Risky, time-consuming.)

For now, Luoshu retreated, plotting his next move.

This anomaly is worth the trouble—but I need a better plan.
