Chapter 36 - The spy among them

Ava sat quietly at a corner table in an upscale downtown café, sipping coffee like she hadn't just dismantled the most secure estate in the city and kidnapped a child.

She wore no disguise—only a soft smile and a neatly pressed coat. Because she knew no one would suspect her. Not yet.

But she didn't know Adrian Knight was already closing in.

---

In the SUV racing through the rain-slicked streets, Adrian's eyes were fixed on the road ahead, his knuckles white around the steering wheel.

Nathaniel sat beside him, scrolling through surveillance images. "She switched phones. Burners. But facial recognition just flagged her at a café on Westbridge Avenue."

Elena, in the backseat, was unusually quiet. Her mind raced—betrayal wasn't new to her, but Ava had been by her side for months. Trusted. Close.

"I should've seen it," she said quietly.

Adrian's jaw clenched. "No. She fooled all of us. That's not on you."

Nathaniel glanced at Elena. "You think Ava would hurt Julia?"

Elena hesitated. "She won't. Not unless Lucien tells her to. Ava doesn't act without orders. That's her weakness."

Adrian pulled the SUV to a halt two blocks from the café. "Then let's exploit it."

---

Inside the café, Ava's phone buzzed once—Lucien's encrypted message: Phase Two begins at midnight. Leave no trace.

She stood, prepared to disappear again, but as she turned, she froze.

Adrian Knight was already inside.

Their eyes met across the room.

Her expression didn't change. No panic. No fear. Just mild surprise.

"You shouldn't be here," she said as he approached.

Adrian smiled coldly. "And yet here I am."

Nathaniel entered from the back, blocking the exit. Elena walked in last, her gaze steady.

Ava looked at her. "You brought the whole family. How touching."

"You lied to me," Elena said.

"I did what I was trained to do," Ava replied calmly. "And you made it easy."

Adrian leaned in. "Where's Julia?"

Ava smirked. "Even if I told you, Lucien would move her the moment I opened my mouth."

Elena stepped forward, her voice steel. "Then give us something else. A location, a name, a timeline. You owe me that much."

For a split second, Ava's eyes flickered—regret? Or weakness?

She slid a piece of paper across the table. "Midnight. Pier 17. That's when Phase Two starts. You'll want to be early."

"Is it a trap?" Adrian asked.

Ava smiled faintly. "Aren't they all?"

Before they could question her further, she pressed a pin concealed in her sleeve—cyanide, fast-acting. But Adrian caught her wrist in time, slamming her hand against the table.

"You're not dying today," he growled. "You're going to watch Lucien burn."

Her face twisted in a rare flash of fear.

Nathaniel cuffed her. "We'll get answers out of her. One way or another."

---

As they drove away with Ava in custody, Adrian looked at Elena. "This ends at midnight."

Elena met his gaze. "Then let's finish what they started."

The storm was far from over.

---

The docks at Pier 17 were cloaked in shadows, the silence broken only by the soft crashing of waves and the low hum of engines hidden beneath the noise of the night. A storm brewed in the distance, dark clouds slowly swallowing the moonlight, as if the sky itself was bracing for what was about to unfold.

Adrian stood at the edge of the pier, dressed in black, his coat fluttering in the wind. His earpiece crackled.

"Snipers are in position," Nathaniel's voice confirmed. "Team Alpha is circling from the south. Beta is ten minutes out."

Elena was beside Adrian, her eyes scanning every shadow, her nerves tight but focused. "If Ava was telling the truth, this is where they'll make the exchange."

"And if she wasn't?" Adrian asked without turning.

Elena's fingers tightened on the small pistol holstered under her jacket. "Then we burn it all down."

Adrian gave a single nod. "No mistakes tonight. We get Julia back. No matter what."

---

Inside one of the abandoned shipping containers, Julia sat quietly, hugging a small stuffed bear someone had given her. The man watching over her—one of Lucien's loyalists—kept glancing at the clock.

"Why hasn't he called?" the man muttered.

He didn't notice the tiny tracker tucked inside the bear's ear.

---

11:48 PM

Nathaniel's voice came again. "Movement. Black SUV approaching from the east entrance. One occupant. Could be Lucien."

Adrian's heart pounded.

They took positions—guns drawn, silence thick with anticipation. The SUV rolled to a halt.

The door opened.

And Lucien walked out.

He looked unchanged—cold, polished, in complete control. His silver cufflinks gleamed under the dock's dim lights as he walked casually forward, hands in his coat pockets.

"You brought the cavalry," he called out, his voice echoing.

Adrian stepped into view. "Where is she?"

Lucien smiled. "You know, Adrian, I didn't take the girl to hurt her. I took her to remind you. You may have built empires... but I built monsters."

Elena emerged next to Adrian, her gun raised. "You're not walking away tonight."

Lucien's gaze flicked to her. "You look just like your mother when you're angry."

That one sentence hit her like a blade.

Adrian's hand went up slightly, a silent signal to hold fire.

Lucien stopped a few feet away. "Let's talk, Knight. One last time."

"You don't get last times," Adrian growled. "You get consequences."

Suddenly, an explosion rocked the far side of the dock—smoke and fire erupting from a container.

"Ambush!" Nathaniel shouted through the comms. "We've got company!"

Gunfire broke out. Shadows emerged from the containers—Lucien's men, well-armed and waiting.

Adrian ducked, grabbing Elena and pulling her behind cover as chaos erupted.

In the midst of the firefight, Julia screamed from somewhere close. "Mommy!"

Elena's eyes went wide. "She's here—Adrian, I heard her!"

"I've got her," he said, already moving through the smoke.

---

Nathaniel led Alpha team toward the explosion, returning fire, taking out two of Lucien's men with clean shots. "Push forward! Secure the girl!"

Lucien, now surrounded by fire and betrayal, smirked like the devil himself. "You always did underestimate how far I'd go."

Adrian reached the container—kicking the door open, he found Julia huddled inside.

Her eyes lit up. "Uncle Adrian!"

He swept her into his arms, shielding her as bullets flew outside.

---

By 12:17 AM

Lucien was gone. Again. But not before leaving a message scrawled on the wall of the container:

"Round one was yours. Round two will cost you everything."

Adrian held Julia close as Elena stepped into the container, relief flooding her face.

"She's safe," Adrian whispered.

But his eyes were already on the message.

And his heart knew this was far from over.
