Chapter 35 - The roaming witch(7)

Nanami made her way back to the lively town center, feeling the cool evening breeze on her face. The sun had begun to set, casting an amber glow across the streets, and the town seemed even more magical as the lights from the lanterns began to flicker to life. She flew her broomstick back to the clothing store.

The bell above the door jingled as she entered, the sweet scent of fresh fabric and wood filling her senses. The woman behind the counter looked up from the bolts of cloth she was arranging, her face lighting up as she recognized Nanami.

"Ah, you've returned!" the woman said with a warm smile. "Did the delivery go well?"

"Yes," Nanami replied, handing over the pouch of coins she had received from the noblewoman. "The cloth was delivered on time, just as promised."

The woman nodded, taking the pouch from Nanami's hands. "Thank you so much. I'm truly grateful for your help. Here is your payment," she said, handing Nanami a small bag of coins.

Nanami smiled and accepted the coins. "Thank you," she said sincerely. "I'm glad I could help."

After a brief exchange of pleasantries, Nanami stepped out of the store, the sound of the bell ringing behind her. She took a deep breath of the crisp evening air and began to wander down the cobblestone streets. The town seemed to be winding down for the day, with fewer people milling about and the shops beginning to close.

As she strolled along, her eyes caught sight of something that immediately piqued her interest: a pair of red ballet shoes displayed in the window of a small boutique. The shoes were simple but elegant, their bright red color standing out against the other items in the shop.

Nanami walked closer, drawn to the vibrant hue. She was wearing a red dress and a matching red hat—perfectly coordinated—but her shoes were black, a little too plain for her outfit. She imagined how lovely it would be to pair her dress with the beautiful red shoes, completing the look perfectly.

She reached for her bag, her fingers brushing against the coins inside as she thought about how to justify the purchase. But as she dug deeper, her heart sank. The amount of money she had was far less than she had hoped.

It was enough to cover her travels for a few days, but it wouldn't be enough for the shoes. She stared at the display, the temptation strong, but the reality of her situation gnawed at her. She needed to save the money for her journey. Buying the shoes would mean less money for food, lodging, and travel expenses.

With a heavy sigh, Nanami pulled her hand back from the bag, a wistful look in her eyes. She would have to leave the shoes behind—at least for now.

She took one last lingering glance at the shoes before turning away and continuing her walk through the town. It was hard, but she knew she couldn't give in to every temptation. Her travels were her priority.

As she walked, the evening sky darkened, and the soft glow of lanterns lit the streets in a comforting embrace. The shoes would remain a distant dream for now, but Nanami knew there would be other opportunities, other towns with new adventures waiting for her.

And perhaps, just perhaps, the next place she visited would have a pair of shoes that fit her budget.
