Standing there on top of the tree, I focused carefully on tracking something. I had a vague sense of direction but wasn't sure exactly what animal I was sensing. If I had to make a guess, it felt like it could be a small fox. Each time I got close, it seemed to slip away. Closing my eyes again, I listened intently, extending my senses deeper into the surroundings. The presence moved further away again.
After nearly an hour, I was so engrossed in the chase and practicing my sensing ability that I failed to notice how far I'd traveled. I opened my eyes, startled to find myself at the very outskirts of the village. I stood close to the village wall, dividing the small forest inside from the larger, denser one beyond. I'd never come this far before.
Just as I considered turning back, I heard a rustle and caught sight of something darting through the underbrush. A small squirrel raced past, followed closely by the animal I had been sensing. It was indeed a fox. I felt a smug satisfaction at my correct guess. Curious, I quietly followed the fox until it slipped through a small, old drainage pipe leading beneath the village walls to the outside.
Intrigued by the prospect of exploring the world beyond Konoha's walls, I carefully examined the pipe, making sure it was safe enough not to collapse on me. After confirming it, I squeezed through, emerging moments later into a much denser forest on the other side.
I climbed onto the nearest tree, momentarily amazed that I could now do something that once seemed impossible. Continuing to sense the fox, I moved deeper into the dense foliage. After several minutes, concern slowly crept into my mind. I was getting far from the village. If I didn't turn back soon, the orphanage supervisors might realize I'd gone missing. Slowing my pace, I decided to take a brief look around, hoping to spot an animal I'd never hunted before. A fresh meal might make a welcome change.
But suddenly, my appetite vanished entirely. A dreadful sensation washed over me. The same stomach-turning feeling you get plunging down from a great height. Instinctively, I froze in place. The forest had become deathly silent, not even a bird chirping or leaves rustling. Closing my eyes, I strained my senses, desperately searching for danger. At first, I felt nothing. Then suddenly, I sensed it clearly. Something large was charging toward me from the left, rapidly closing in.
Trees snapped violently, wood splintered, and an earsplitting roar tore through the air. I quickly tried to hide among the leaves, but before I could fully conceal myself, a massive shape burst through the trees below.
It was an enormous bear, covered in deep scars across its face and abdomen. Something had badly wounded it, and the creature had clearly descended into a murderous rage. Bloodshot eyes snapped toward me, instantly focusing their fury.
Before I even fully registered what I was seeing, the bear lunged forward, swinging one massive, chakra-infused paw into the trunk of the tree where I stood. The entire trunk exploded under the impact, wood shards flying in every direction. My eyes widened in horror as the tree beneath me tilted violently and began collapsing.
I fell through the air, my heart pounding in panic. The bear rushed toward me, jaws wide and claws gleaming dangerously. In desperation, I twisted my body mid-air, landing clumsily against another nearby tree. I barely steadied myself when the bear swung again, obliterating that trunk as effortlessly as the first.
This time, I had anticipated its attack. Before the tree even began to topple, I leapt toward another. But the bear adapted quickly, its huge body barreling forward at astonishing speed. With terrifying strength, it reached the next tree before I could, smashing into its base and shattering it into pieces.
I had no footing left and plunged helplessly downward. Time seemed to slow, the bear rearing up on its hind legs below, its bloodied claws swiping upward to tear me apart. A surge of desperate determination filled me. Channeling chakra instinctively into my leg, I kicked off the falling tree trunk with all my strength.
A rush of chakra surged through me, propelling my small body backward far beyond my expectations. The bear roared furiously, swiping wildly and missing me by mere inches as I sailed past its grasp.
I landed painfully on the forest floor, sliding along dirt and leaves. Behind me, the bear pivoted, roaring in rage and frustration at losing its prey. Quickly scanning my surroundings, I spotted a massive fallen tree nearby with a small gap beneath it.
I forced chakra through my already hurting limbs once more, sprinting forward desperately. Just before the bear could catch up, I dove beneath the fallen trunk, slipping quickly through the narrow opening and emerging on the other side. I hoped the enormous obstacle would slow it down enough for me to escape.
My hopes shattered instantly. With brute force born of fury, the bear charged headlong into the massive trunk, smashing straight through with a thunderous crash. Wooden splinters and dust exploded outward. The creature bellowed in pain from the reckless impact, fresh blood now dripping heavily from its mouth and worsened wounds. Yet, it didn't slow down at all.
The ground trembled beneath its heavy steps, blood spraying from its snarling jaws as it lunged toward me again. Its crimson eyes locked on mine, consumed by uncontrollable rage and bloodlust.
I wouldn't be able to move fast enough due to the pain and strain in my legs, so I decided to stand my ground.
