Chapter 44 - Chapter 44: Corpse

"It's gold!" Mekin, Zach, and the others also noticed the ornaments in the counter, and excitement showed on their faces.

Hearing their words, Scott's smile faded. He turned around indifferently and said, "Let me make it clear first. Although we're a team, the supplies we pick up are counted separately for each person. This has always been the rule, and they know this very well. It's not that I'm deliberately bullying you." As he spoke, he jerked his chin towards the twenty scavengers from the consortium.

Mekin and the others changed their expressions upon hearing this. They turned their heads to look, and saw a thin young man, the leader of the twenty scavengers from the consortium, nodding and saying, "That's right. The supplies we pick up depend on our own abilities. So don't think about slacking off. Whoever is lucky and picks up more, it's their own skill."

Upon hearing this, Mekin and the others were suddenly a bit dejected. There was no doubt that Scott had found these gold ornaments first, so they naturally counted as his supplies, and they couldn't get any commission from them.

Dudian was also disappointed when he heard this rule, but he quickly perked up. In fact, this rule was fair to them newbies. With this rule in place, at least the supplies they picked up wouldn't be shared by others. It was just that Scott was lucky this time. The place he casually chose as a base happened to be a gold store, so he made a big profit.

At this time, Scott smashed all the glass on the cabinet, took out all the ornaments inside, and piled them up in one of the cabinets. Then he gripped his short sword again and said, "Let's go upstairs and take a look, and clear it out." As he said this, he seemed to remember something and turned back to Dudian and the others, saying, "For the supplies that everyone picks up, others had better not try to steal them or use other dirty methods to take them. If the owner of the supplies dies during the scavenging process, the supplies he picked up will only belong to the consortium and won't be shared."

Dudian knew that he was warning them newbies not to be blinded by greed and have some crooked thoughts. At the same time, he secretly admired the fact that the consortium had established such a rule, which indeed largely prevented scavengers from killing each other in the wilderness.

After hearing Scott's words, several children at the end of the line changed their expressions, gripped their weapons, and followed the team.

Scott and Mia led the way in front and walked up the stairs.

There were cracks as thick as a finger on the corridor covered with vegetation. Some things were scattered on the ground. Although they were covered with thick dust and vegetation, Dudian could tell at a glance that they were women's shoes and wallets, as if wordlessly telling the riots that had happened here.

With a bang, suddenly, the stairs that a middle-aged scavenger from the consortium at the back stepped on collapsed, and he fell to the ground. Fortunately, this was only the first floor, and with his blessed constitution, he wasn't injured. However, the sudden noise startled everyone else.

Scott looked back, frowned, and said, "Be careful, everyone." After that, he took the lead to the second floor. The light here was extremely dim, and the corridor was pitch black. The ventilation windows had long been covered by vegetation, and sunlight couldn't penetrate in. It was damp and dark inside.

Scott took out the flint he carried with him and lit a torch. The dim yellow light illuminated the surroundings. He held the torch and walked in front to the first room in the corridor. The door of the room was half-open. Scott gently pushed the door open, and a gust of cold wind suddenly blew out from the room, almost extinguishing the torch.

Scott lowered the torch a bit, held his sword in the other hand, and slowly entered the room. The ground inside was in a mess. The chair was knocked over, half of the curtain was torn down, the window was broken, and there was dense vegetation outside.

Crack!

Suddenly, a slight sound came from the depths of the room.

Scott's face changed. He immediately raised the torch to shine. In the bathroom inside the room, the shower curtain had collapsed on the ground, and two pale and withered thighs were stretched out from the bathroom. As he shone the torch, he immediately saw that the owner of the thighs was actually a woman whose face had completely rotted, and the slight sound was coming from her chest.

There, a huge black rat was lying on her chest, constantly gnawing at the woman's breast.

Dudian saw this scene through the gap between Scott's arm. His pupils suddenly shrank. The rat was as big as a hunting dog, with thick black fur all over its body, exuding a strong stench of decay. Its tail was as thick as an adult's finger, and it was actually eating the human corpse with relish!

"It's a demonic creature!" Scott was the first to react. He let out a low growl and swung his sword to strike!

At this time, the huge rat that was eating the woman also noticed the firelight behind it. It turned its head to look, its eyes blood-red and full of ferocity. Its sharp mouth was stained with thick bloodstains, and several long whiskers twitched slightly. It seemed to notice that there were more people on Scott's side. It paused for a moment, then suddenly turned around and ran towards the bathroom. It stepped on the bathtub and jumped out of the window.

Scott and Mia's attacks all missed. They looked at each other with lingering fear.

At this time, Mekin and the others behind also noticed the commotion. Hearing Scott's words, they all gathered around.

Scott said in a low voice, "It got away." After that, he put down the torch and shone it on the dead woman. The woman seemed to die with her eyes open, staring at him, and her pupils were actually pale green.

"It stinks so much," Mekin covered his nose and said.

Dudian had forgotten to breathe. He was extremely shocked. Could it be that under the nuclear radiation for three hundred years, the genes of the rats living here had mutated so terribly from generation to generation?

His gaze fell on the woman. She was naked, covered with the collapsed shower curtain. The stiff flesh on her chest had been gnawed deeply by the rat, and half of her heart had been bitten off. The ribs mixed in the dry and hard flesh could be seen. However, his gaze fell on the center of her forehead, where there was a blood hole as thick as a finger. It seemed to be... caused by a bullet?

Dudian was taken aback for a moment, then he rejected the possibility that it was a bullet. Instead, it was more likely to be the damage caused by an arrow. After all, the power of a bullet would cause obvious tearing and damage to the flesh around the bullet hole.

However, what he couldn't understand was that if this woman died from an arrow, she died at the hands of a human. Who would shoot her with an arrow? Suddenly, he thought of something he had overlooked, and his hair stood on end all over his body!

This woman was obviously taking a bath!

However, the water supply system in this house should have broken down long ago!

Whether the person was a scavenger or a hunter, they definitely wouldn't be unable to stand not taking a bath for ten days. Most importantly, people in this world rarely took a bath like this while being completely naked!

"Could it be that she was a human from three hundred years ago and died while taking a bath? But if so... her body should have rotted away long ago!" Dudian was a bit stunned. At this time, Mia suddenly squatted down. It seemed that she didn't want the woman to die in the wilderness with her body exposed. She gently lifted the curtain on her body to cover her completely. However, when she lifted it, Dudian accidentally saw that the woman's arm... was actually a sharp claw!

Her nails had turned into sharp and long thorns, and the five thorns were slightly curved. It was hard to imagine how much damage it would cause if one was grasped by such a hand!

"A mutated person?" Dudian was stunned and couldn't say a word. His mind became a bit confused.
