Chapter 61 - Chapter 61: The Struggle and The Catlike Innocence

Ethan walked along the dense forest path, the towering trees casting long, ominous shadows. The air was thick with an eerie calmness, the only sounds being the rustling leaves beneath his feet and the occasional chirp of distant birds.

Despite the seemingly serene surroundings, Ethan's mind was far from at ease. His recent encounters had left him with more questions than answers, particularly about the mysterious Xiao Yao. Word of her abilities had spread through the academy like wildfire. Whispers of a half-human, half-cat being had filled the air, and the most unsettling part was that many people were repulsed by her. But Ethan, for reasons he couldn't fully explain, was intrigued by her, fascinated by the grace in her movements, and the sharp intelligence in her eyes.

He had only caught glimpses of her in the past, but today, it seemed fate had other plans. As he walked deeper into the forest, a familiar figure appeared through the trees—a silhouette that seemed both delicate and fierce at the same time. Her cat-like ears flicked at the faintest noise, her pupils dilated with an animalistic intensity.

Xiao Yao.

Her appearance startled Ethan for a moment, but he quickly recovered, walking toward her with a calm demeanor. The rumors about her were unkind—many saw her appearance as unnatural, a cruel twist of fate. Her feline features, the soft fur running along her ears and tail, were the subject of mockery. Yet, despite the cruel rumors, Ethan saw none of that. What he saw was a woman who had been burdened by something beyond her control.

"Xiao Yao," Ethan called out, his voice steady as he approached her.

She stiffened, her tail swishing slightly behind her as she turned to face him. Her amber eyes—strikingly beautiful yet filled with a quiet sorrow—locked onto his. "Ethan," she said softly, her voice smooth yet laced with a certain sadness. "What brings you here?"

Ethan stopped a few steps away from her, taking in her half-human, half-cat form with an ease that seemed to put her slightly at ease. "I was just passing by. I didn't expect to find you here, but… I'm glad I did."

Xiao Yao looked away for a moment, almost as if she was embarrassed by his gaze. She nervously twirled a strand of her hair between her fingers, her cat ears twitching slightly. "I suppose you've heard the rumors," she said, her voice barely above a whisper.

Ethan tilted his head slightly. "I've heard the whispers," he admitted. "But they don't matter to me."

Xiao Yao's amber eyes flicked up to meet his gaze, and for the first time, she seemed to relax, as if Ethan's words had brought her a sense of peace. "Why? Everyone else sees me as a freak. I'm… not human," she said, her voice laced with a quiet self-loathing.

Ethan took a step closer, his voice unwavering as he said, "And that makes you less than human?"

She hesitated, her eyes narrowing slightly. "People think I'm an abomination. My very existence is an anomaly."

Ethan could see the pain behind her words, the deep insecurity that had been etched into her over years of mistreatment. She had lived in the shadows, rejected and misunderstood. He stepped closer still, now standing just a few inches away from her. "I don't care about the rumors. In fact," he smiled gently, "I think you're cute the way you are."

Xiao Yao blinked, her tail flicking nervously. "Cute?" she asked, incredulous. "I'm… not even human."

Ethan reached out, gently brushing a lock of her dark hair from her face. "Who says being different makes you any less perfect?" he asked, his tone tender yet firm. "I don't see a freak. I see a person who's stronger than most because you've had to fight against the world just to exist."

Her eyes widened as she processed his words. There was a soft flutter in her chest, a strange sensation she had never felt before. For the first time in her life, someone had seen her—not as a monster or a freak—but as someone worth standing beside.

"I… you…" Xiao Yao stammered, her voice breaking with emotion. "No one has ever said anything like that to me before."

Ethan grinned, the smirk that had become his trademark tugging at the corners of his lips. "Well, that's because no one else has the guts to look past the surface. You're special, Xiao Yao. And I think you're far more capable than anyone gives you credit for."

Her heart skipped a beat. She found herself unable to speak, the overwhelming emotions swirling inside her. She had never had anyone—especially someone as strong and determined as Ethan—speak to her this way. For the first time in years, she felt accepted. Truly accepted, without conditions, without fear of rejection.

For a long moment, neither of them spoke, the only sound the wind rustling through the leaves above them. Finally, Xiao Yao took a deep breath, lifting her gaze to meet his. "Why are you so kind to me?" she asked softly, her voice trembling slightly.

Ethan shrugged, his eyes meeting hers with an unflinching intensity. "Because I believe in you. And I won't let anyone tell you otherwise. Besides," he added, the corners of his mouth lifting into a smile, "I think you're pretty amazing."

Her heart raced in her chest. No one had ever spoken to her like that, with such absolute certainty and warmth. His words felt like a lifeline—a reassurance that maybe, just maybe, she wasn't as alone in this world as she had always believed.

A silence fell over them once more, but this time, it felt different. It wasn't heavy or awkward. It was comfortable, peaceful. Xiao Yao found herself stepping closer, her body naturally gravitating toward him as if pulled by an invisible force.

She looked up at him, her gaze soft yet filled with an intensity she hadn't allowed herself to feel in years. "Thank you," she whispered, her voice breaking as tears welled in her eyes. "You don't know how much this means to me."

Ethan smiled warmly, his heart oddly light at her words. He didn't fully understand what was happening, but something in him stirred at the sight of her vulnerability. "You don't need to thank me," he said gently. "Just know that I'm here for you. And if anyone ever tries to make you feel less than you are, I'll make sure they regret it."

Xiao Yao's tail swished with emotion as she nodded, her voice barely audible. "I'll never forget this."

In that moment, something shifted between them—an unspoken bond forged in the quiet corners of the forest. Xiao Yao had been seen for the first time not as an outcast, but as someone worthy of admiration, respect, and even love. And Ethan? He didn't know it yet, but he had just taken the first step into a world of new, complex feelings, feelings that he would soon come to realize were far more complicated than he had ever imagined.

But for now, all that mattered was the silent promise they had made to each other: that they would face whatever challenges came their way, together.
