Chapter 28 - Chapter 28: The Assembly Announcement

It was a bright Wednesday morning when the entire school gathered in the assembly hall. The air was filled with excitement and anticipation as the principal stepped forward to announce the best students of the term.

Rita stood quietly among the crowd, her heart racing as she eagerly awaited the announcement. She had worked hard all term, pushing herself to her limits. The principal's voice echoed through the loudspeaker as he began to call out the names.

"And now, the best students for this term," the principal announced. "First, we have Rita, for her outstanding performance in academics and leadership."

Rita's heart swelled with pride as the applause filled the hall. She couldn't help but smile, feeling a sense of accomplishment. She had always strived to be the best, and now her hard work was paying off.

But as the principal continued, Rita couldn't help but notice Evelyn standing off to the side, her face a mask of anger. The announcement wasn't over yet, but Evelyn's body language spoke volumes. Rita had seen the familiar signs of jealousy in Evelyn's eyes before, and today was no different.

The principal, noticing the shift in the atmosphere, smiled warmly. "Rita and the other top students will no longer need to attend the usual portions and classes, as they have earned a well-deserved break."

The crowd clapped and cheered, but Evelyn's hands remained firmly clenched by her sides. She stood there, motionless, the jealousy radiating from her as she tried to hide her anger behind a forced smile.

As the assembly continued, Rita tried to focus on the celebrations, but she couldn't help but feel Evelyn's burning gaze on her. Rita had always considered Evelyn a close friend, but there were times when she could sense the tension between them - and today was one of those times.

The bell rang, signaling the end of the assembly, and the students began to disperse. Rita stood, gathering her things, but before she could leave, Evelyn stormed up to her.

"You think you're special, don't you?" Evelyn snapped, her voice sharp and filled with bitterness. "I've worked just as hard, if not harder than you. And yet here you are, getting all the recognition. It's not fair!"

Rita's chest tightened. She had been expecting this. The jealousy, the anger. She had tried to be happy for herself, but it seemed impossible when Evelyn felt so slighted.

"Evelyn, I didn't do this to make you feel bad," Rita said softly, trying to keep her voice calm. "I worked hard, and this was the result. It's not a competition."

But Evelyn wasn't having any of it. "You think just because you got picked for some reward, you're better than everyone else? You think I don't work hard? This isn't about your reward, Rita. It's about what's fair!"

Rita swallowed, her throat tight with emotion. She wanted to say something back, but nothing seemed right. Instead, she simply turned and walked away, her heart heavy. She hadn't wanted this kind of tension between them.

As Rita left the assembly hall, she couldn't shake the feeling that their friendship was becoming more complicated by the day. She couldn't help but wonder if this moment - this small victory of hers - would be the last straw that broke their bond.
