Chapter 4 - CHAPTER 4: Trial And Conviction Part 2

During this time Veyne has been analysing his surrounding area. He deduced that the runes on the door extend throughout the whole room meaning he won't be able to break out easily without risking his life. However it seems the main issue is that those same runes have isolated this chamber from all other dimensions, which means he can't summon any of his undead creatures. He is in a real bind, they must of scrutinised over every detail. He can't find a way out.

Times up, Elaina charges in. Veyne narrowly dodges the swing and bolts backwards. It only took one second and he's already cornered. Looks like the only way out is to fight head on. Not his style but he has no other choice. Perhaps if he can kill half of the council it may weaken the barrier enough to break out.

"You're clever enough to stop me from summoning my soldiers from outside this room. But it looks like you failed to stop the ones I brought in here with me."

Five purple vortexes swirl at either side of him. Out of each vortex steps a large shadowy skeleton standing nine feet tall, one with a missing arm. They stand at attention. Veyne thinks to himself that they won't do much but they may buy the time he needs. Reaching this chest, a smaller vortex appears and he pulls from it an ornate bone shortsword.

Beads of sweat rain from most of the council members' faces as the young Matias yells.

"W-wait, we didn't plan for this. Y-you said he would be powerless if we sealed him in and destroyed his castle!"

"Hold steady Matias! Do not lose your nerve."

Hearing the distress, Veyne looks towards the throne of the boy and activates his blood crown, making a black and red shock wave of magic encompass the boy. He starts to froth at the mouth and fall backwards. The others gasp as Veyne is interrupted by a constant barrage of attacks by Elaina. He dodges and parries as they zip around the room at supersonic speeds, red and purple lights flinging out as they clash.

While he holds off Elaina, his skeleton soldiers slowly charge at the weaker members. Attempting to crush them. They are blocked by magic barriers from more experienced council members. Seeing the barrier gives Veyne an idea. While on the defensive, he weaves through the legs of his soldiers, ordering them to attack Elaina. Not skipping a beat, she rears back her blade and chops all five in half with one attack. She looks on with confidence only to see Veyne looking upwards.

"Shiad-nafic-toosax-niada!"

He yells with his metallic voice reverberating through the building. A second later a loud roar is heard in the sky and from outside a crash of lightning, fire and ice hits the room.

Nercrothix circles above the Divine Council compound, hurling wave after wave of elemental magic at the building, unable to destroy the divine runes protecting the center chamber where its master fights.

Back in the hall, blood seeps out from the armor on Veyne's chest. Despide dodging her blows, her radiating offensive magic has been taking its toll on him.

Although Veyne is an S rank Realmforger, his power lies within his ability to summon and create thousands of undead beings. His physical abilities are second rate compared to other close range Realmforgers.

The room shakes while the bombardment from above continues. Outside, the divine enforcers are heard forming teams to deal with the beast. The council panicked, start to yell at each other from behind their shields. Seeing the chaos erupt, Veyne thinks to himself that it is now or never.

A blast of heat changes the colour of the room to orange. The yelling stops as the council members look on with dread. Seeing in the air Veyne, holding a growing ball of molten magma and fire.

"H-he's going to kill us all!"

"Clam down! Elaina, kill him now!"

Hearing her fathers voice she feels the pressure and knows the only way to stop without accidently killing everyone else behind her is to lose her sword.

"Father imbue my sword!"

Elaina says as she switches to a backwards grip on her massive blade and hoists it above her shoulder like a spear. Her red lighting swarms the blade as it starts to concentrate at the tip, making the whole sword glow red before becoming lighting itself.

"Now!"

Theiton reaches out one hand while struggling to hold up his barrier with the other. He creates a white and gold magic circle and covers her blade in divine magic.

Elaina takes a hard step forward through the blasting heat. She lines up the shot and with all her might she throws the sword at Veyne's chest. He throws the lava ball towards her to meet it. With frightening ease, it bores a hole through the middle of the magma, dispersing it. Before striking its target, Veyne grits his teeth and whispers to himself.

"One step closer."

A powerful blast knocks everything in the room back. Cracks form along the walls and ceiling. Just as the heat disappears. Elaina gets back to her feet and instinctually tries to summon a new weapon.

"Looks like the barrier is still holding up."

She takes a second to look back and make sure her father is alright. Seeing only a small fracture in their divine barriers. Back to the task at hand, Elania takes the strap on her back that would normally hold her sword, and pushes magic through the leather, turning it into an electrical whip. She spins it and approaches.

By the door lies Veyne, on the ground, face up and lifeless. From shoulder to shoulder a devastating hole unburdens him of his flesh and armor. Only shattered parts of this spine and rib cage remain.

Before taking a sigh of relief, Elaina's eyes glow while she checks his vitals and mana to make sure he's dead.

"Elaina, is it done?"

"Yes father, he is truly dead."

A collective sigh of relief fills the room. Everybody looking at each other, happy that they all survived and their long long time planning has finally paid off.

"Excellent, now that stain on this world has finally been dealt with, we can devote our holy time to guiding this world back to the way it should be."

Marie being the only one not celebrating, has a somber look on her face knowing what they all had to do just to get here. Seeing a moment to speak up she opens her mouth but stops as Theiton gives her a disapproving stare.

"Lady Breanne, lead the others and start preparations for taking the divine barrier down."

"At once."

"Elaina, get me a report from your enforcers outside, I wish to know the status of that dragon."

"Yes father."

"And one last thing… well done. You have done a great service, daughter."

The light in Elaina's eye lights up as he praised her. Suddenly this was all worth it to her.

"Thank you father. I will get right on that report."

As everyone disperses, Theiton confidently walks over to the corpse. Finally getting to see him like this brings a smile to his face. He looks over what's left of Veyne.

"So after all this time all that remains of you is your skeleton. Fitting really."

Curious as to why Veyne's body is still slightly smouldering he goes in for a closer look.

By the door Elaina looks over to watch her father be triumphant over the thing that plagued his mind all these years only to notice Veyne body is not the same. Somehow the rest of his armor and flesh has melted away. Something is not right.

"Father look out!"

It's too late, blood gushes out from Theiton as the risen skeleton of Veyne attacks. Before being attacked Theiton noticed small runes carved throughout every inch of his skeleton.

"My final backup is my own corpse!"

Veyne says as his bones melt and contort to get bigger and form fangs and claws, he thinks to himself that he doesn't have much time like this but if he can just escape and make it out he can rebuild and get his body back.

"No!"

Elaina squealed with hate, darting toward him.

"I'll fucking kill you!"

Swinging wildly, she narrowly misses and Veyne kicks her backwards. Sensing the weakened barrier, he thinks it's now or never. He bolts for the door and using all his strength he cleaves it open but not before sacrificing his right arm to do so. He flashes down the halls toward the main entrance, ignoring the other divine enforcers waiting outside. Spells flying at him he manages to make it outside only to see a slain Necrothix at his feet.

"I-I was too late."

From behind a spear of lightning pierces him, shattering his bones. His nonexistent eyes look back to see a berserk Elaina huffing while she demands another spear.

She violently trusts down to obliterate what's left. Just before it makes contact Veyne's skull and spine glow purple and detach, flying in the air as a feeble last ditch effort to survive.

This looks like it's over for me. I swear if I could just live I would slaughter them all. I guess I had a good run. One hundred and fifteen is longer than most get.

Memories of his younger self flow through his mind. He sees all his memories of his first kill, getting chased out of his village, summoning his first soldier, having fun creating all his creatures and getting his S ranking.

"So it's true they do flash befo-"

Mid air Elaina crushes his skull with both hands. It is over. The Lich King, the man of many plans and Landiouses scourge, Veyne Moregrove is dead.
