Chapter 51
Preparations for the trip were swift. The royal attendants packed essentials while Mei ensured Ping had everything she needed. Unlike before, when leaving the palace felt like running away, this time, it felt like an adventure—one she would embark on with Ling by her side.
The morning they set out, the palace was unusually quiet. Only a handful of guards accompanied them, keeping a respectful distance. Ling had insisted they keep the entourage small. "I don't want to feel like a king on this trip. Just a man traveling with his wife."
Ping had smiled at that.
The journey began on horseback, the cool morning air carrying the scent of fresh earth. The road stretched far beyond the capital, leading them through lush forests and quiet villages. The people they passed bowed deeply to their king, but Ling barely acknowledged them, his focus entirely on Ping.
After hours of travel, they reached a small riverside town, nestled between rolling hills. Unlike the grand halls of Mora, this place was simple, untouched by war or politics.
"We'll rest here for the night," Ling said, helping Ping off her horse.
They found an inn, a modest but warm place where no one treated them like royalty. It was strange, but freeing. As night fell, they sat outside by the river, watching the stars reflect on the water's surface.
Ping sighed contentedly. "I never thought I'd experience something like this."
Ling glanced at her. "What do you mean?"
She hugged her knees. "Before, my world was small. Just my father's house, then the palace. I never imagined being free like this."
Ling reached out, brushing a stray hair from her face. "You're free now, Ping. Always."
Her heart swelled at his words. She leaned against him, resting her head on his shoulder.
And for the first time in her life, she truly believed it.
