"Explain."
Sitting there for a quick sec. I lined it all up in my head.
This played out better than I expected.
Curious cat achievement was achieved, although not suspicious of my person, she was definitely interested and concerned. Now all I have to do is say the right things. Not to lie, just blend a little truth with wordplay. Keep it vague, but sound like I know what I'm talking about.
Then she hit me again, her tone steadier than before.
"Out with it."
Snapping myself back to reality.
I leaned back, resting my arms on the armrest.
"Well… my mom used to say I was—what's the word, intuitive."
"Tell me, ma'am… what do you know about Damon Salvatore and the vampires that have been sitting under Fell's Church for the better part of the last century?"
That did it.
Her eyes widened just a bit. Then she sat back slowly, pulling it together.
"…How do you know about them?" Her voice dropped. "Not even your mother ever said a word about the ones entombed there."
She looked at me differently now.
Then she asked, voice cool but probing.
"…Are you a seer, my dear?"
I tilted my head. Thought about playing dumb, but nah.
"I wouldn't say that."
Paused.
"I just know more than most, especially when it comes to the supernatural. And the kind of things that affect both the supernatural and the mundane."
She didn't respond right away.
She just sat there.
Watching.
Like she was waiting for whatever came next to confirm what she had already started thinking.
"What's coming?"
I exhaled through my nose, a small smirk pulling at the edge of my mouth.
"Well, that'd be telling," I said, real casual. "But what I can say… it involves a doppelgänger, a talisman, a Bennett witch, and a shit-ton of dead bodies."
She blinked. Her whole face shifted.
"Motherfucker," she muttered under her breath, slipping out of character for half a second.
Then she caught herself, straightened up. Calm again. Composed.
"And here I thought we were getting' along," she said, like she was talking to herself more than me. "But I see the apple doesn't fall far from the damn tree."
She let that hang for a second, eyes searching mine.
"…What do you want?"
I stayed relaxed in the chair. No rush.
"Ain't no need to get agitated," I said. "Truthfully, I enjoyed our little talk. Enlightening, really. All I'm asking is some slight tutelage. Guidance. And access to a spell, one I know only a select few still have."
"I want you to protect Bonnie," she said finally, voice low and firm. "If what you're hinting at is true, then trouble's gonna follow her… same way it followed her mother."
I nodded once.
"Sure," I said. "But let's be clear, protection on my end becomes null and void if she does one of three things. A, runs headfirst into danger just to save someone from being dumb. Unless you sweeten the pot, that's a no from me. B, gets curious and walks straight into a mess she could've avoided. And C… if her own actions create a situation that brings any supernatural faction down on her head."
She didn't blink.
"Fine," she said after a pause. "But I want this to be magically binding. Tomorrow."
I shrugged.
"Cool with me."
I stood up, adjusting my jeans.
"If that's the case, I've got some saving to do."
Her eyes narrowed.
"Excuse me?"
I waved it off.
"No need to worry. It ain't got nothin' to do with Bonnie. Just something I need to handle. Call it a prologue of what's coming. I gave my word, didn't I?"
She watched me head for the door. Just before I reached it, she called out.
"Be ready for your next lesson tomorrow. And stop skipping school just to come here—I don't need no rumors floatin' around."
I threw a hand up over my shoulder on the way out.
"You got it, Teach."
