Basketball practice was the same as always—nothing special, nothing exciting. Just the sound of sneakers screeching against the polished floor and the rhythmic echo of a bouncing ball. But Ye-jun's mind was somewhere else completely.
Lately, weird things had been happening. Objects would float all of a sudden when no one was touching them, shadows stretched in ways they shouldn't, as if something was lurking just beyond sight, waiting. Watching.
Shit. He needed to stop thinking about this, he needed to get his mind of this, it had been taking up too much space in his mind recently, it was annoying.
"I'm hitting the bathroom," he yelled to his friend across the court, not waiting for a response before slipping out of the gym.
Of course, he wasn't actually going to the bathroom. He just didn't want to be here. He slid his phone out of his backpack, aimlessly scrolling as he wandered the empty hallways. Occasionally wandering into classrooms or looking through windows, everything was fine and quiet until he heard it, the clank of the heals, he could tell who that was from miles away, Dr.G
Then he heard her keys.
The distinct clack of heels still hitting against the tiled floor.
His body moved on instinct. Without thinking, he darted toward the nearest bathroom, pushing the door open and slipping inside before anyone could see him. He exhaled sharply, still catching his breath, ready to finally relax—
But then he noticed he wasn't alone, he noticed a guy from his grade.
The guy stood by the mirror, a cigarette in one hand, a turned-off phone in the other. He was fixing his hair, looking into the mirror, completely unbothered. Ye-jun recognized that face. Do-yun.
Not that he knew him personally that well, but people talk you know?
Do-yun was well known—for all the wrong reasons. It felt like every other week or day, he was getting sent to the office for something new. Then again, Ye-jun wasn't much better so he could not quite say anything about it.
Shrugging it off, he moved further inside the bathroom, leaning against the wall before sliding down to sit on the cold bathroom floor, nasty. He could hear every little movement Do-yun made—the quiet rustle of his clothes, the soft exhale of smoke. But something shifted.
Do-yun froze.
His entire posture changed, his eyes widening for half a second before narrowing again.
What the hell?
Do-yun suddenly turned his phone on quickly calling someone and muttered something under his breath before rushing out of the bathroom, cigarette and all.
Ye-jun blinked.
What the fuck was that about?
Whatever. It didn't matter everyone in this school was already wierd.
At least his mom wasn't home tonight. She was probably out drinking again. He wasn't sure why that felt like a relief, but it was, it was more peaceful without her. Things between them had been shit for as long as he could remember. Ever since his dad walked out before he was even born, his mom had drowned herself in alcohol, barely existing in the same space as him. Ye-jun never cared to ask about his dad. He figured the guy was just an asshole, and that was the end of it.
Or at least, that's what he thought.
Oh would he find something out if he tried to search.
For the rest of the day, the weird shit he had been noticing suddenly became impossible to ignore.
Sparks flickered at his fingertips when he touched things. Objects didn't just move—they floated, glowing faintly before settling back down. His chest felt heavy, like something inside him was shifting, waking up.
He didn't know what was happening, it felt weird.
If he had to be honest this stuff has happened since he was a child, though it wasnt that obvious back then, just occasional strange sounds or weird aura around him.
And at this point, he was too tired to care.
By the time he got out of the shower, he was moving on autopilot, towel-drying his hair as he flopped onto his bed getting under his blanket getting ready to have a good night sleep.
"Man… what the fuck is going on…" he mumbled, barely getting the words out before exhaustion dragged him under.
Ye-jun didn't know it yet, but that night, he would wake up somewhere else.
Somewhere impossible.
And he wouldn't be the only one.
Do-yun, the boy who had chosen to leave magic behind, would be pulled back into the world he had abandoned. But unlike Ye-jun, he knew exactly what was happening, his family was full of wizards, not just some wizards, one of the most famous wizard families in that world.
And he knew this was only the beginning, nothing ever ended well in this world, he knew there was a reason he was here, he knew there was a reason that this time Ye-Jjun was also here.
