Chapter 12 - Into the Abyss

The Hidden Path

Kael hesitated for only a moment before nodding. He had come too far to turn back now. Whatever truth awaited him, he needed to face it.

Elyra, however, wasn't convinced. "Are we really just going to follow some mysterious old guy who conveniently knows more about you than you do?"

Kael glanced at her, his gaze unwavering. "We don't have a choice. If I don't figure out what's happening to me, I won't be able to protect anyone."

Elyra exhaled sharply, then holstered her weapon. "Fine. But if he tries anything, I'm putting a bullet through his skull."

The old man chuckled, turning toward a hidden staircase at the back of the cathedral. "Come, we do not have much time."

Descent into Darkness

The staircase spiraled downward, deeper than seemed possible. The air grew cold, the torches lining the walls flickering with eerie blue flames. Kael felt something shift within him, like an unseen presence stirring in response to this place.

Finally, they reached an ancient stone chamber. The walls were covered in inscriptions, glowing faintly with a light that pulsed like a heartbeat. In the center of the room stood a massive door, sealed with chains made of pure energy.

The old man turned to Kael. "Beyond this door lies what you seek. But once you enter, there is no turning back."

Kael stepped forward without hesitation. "Open it."

The old man nodded, raising his hands. The chains rattled, then shattered, releasing a wave of power that made the entire chamber tremble. The doors creaked open, revealing a vast abyss filled with swirling stars and endless darkness.

Kael took a deep breath and stepped inside.

Confronting the Past

As soon as he entered, reality warped. He was no longer in the chamber but in a cosmic expanse where time and space intertwined. Before him stood a towering figure, its form shifting between light and shadow.

"You have returned, at last."

Kael's heart pounded. "Who are you?"

The entity's voice resonated in his mind. "I am what remains of your former self. The part of you that was sealed away. The god you once were."

Kael's vision blurred as memories flooded back—galaxies bending at his will, civilizations rising and falling at his command. He had been more than a god; he had been the arbiter of creation itself.

But he had chosen to forget. To experience life as a mortal. And now, that choice was being undone.

"The world is breaking, Kael. The time of gods and mortals colliding is upon us. You cannot run from what you are."

Kael clenched his fists. "Then what am I supposed to do?"

The entity's eyes burned like twin stars. "Awaken. Reclaim what was lost. Become what you were meant to be."

Kael took a step forward, and the abyss shattered.

Awakening

Back in the chamber, Kael gasped, his body trembling with raw energy. The old man watched in silence, while Elyra stood, eyes wide with shock.

Kael looked at his hands. The golden energy that once flickered at his fingertips now surged like a living storm. He wasn't just remembering—he was changing.

And for the first time, he truly understood.

This was only the beginning.
