Chapter 20 - HEALING THOUGHTS

The night was a quiet one, punctuated only by the soft hum of distant traffic and the occasional rustle of leaves stirred by the wind. Vivian stood by the window, her hand pressed lightly against the glass, watching the world outside move on as if nothing had changed. But everything had changed. It had to.

Her phone sat on the bed beside her, the screen still lit up with the last message from Damien. It had been a simple thing, nothing too elaborate—just words that seemed to anchor her to a reality she hadn't been sure she wanted to face. We're in this together, Viv. Don't forget that. He hadn't asked for anything more. He hadn't demanded answers, or pushed her toward a place she wasn't ready for. And maybe that's what made him different. Maybe that's why, despite everything, she felt an undeniable pull toward him.

But she wasn't sure she was ready for him—not in the way he likely wanted. It wasn't about Damien. It was about what he represented. She couldn't just let someone in so easily. Not again. The betrayal, the lies, the constant questioning of her worth—it was all still so fresh in her mind, the wounds too raw to simply gloss over with another attempt at connection.

But Damien… he had never made her feel like she was a burden, or like her heart wasn't worth his time. He had been there when she needed him most, even when she didn't ask for it. That kind of loyalty, that kind of steadiness, wasn't something she could ignore forever.

Her phone buzzed again, and Vivian let out a sigh before picking it up. It was a message from Damien—this time a simple question, but one that made her pause. You okay?

She could feel the weight of the question, the simple concern he always seemed to offer. There were times when she almost wished he would stop. She didn't want to feel vulnerable, didn't want to let anyone in. But then again, wasn't it that same vulnerability that made them human? That made relationships real?

Vivian hesitated for a moment before typing her reply. I'm fine. Just thinking.

She stared at the screen for a long moment before setting the phone back down on the bed. There was a part of her that was ready to reach out to him, to tell him that she needed him, that she didn't know how to move forward on her own. But there was also another part of her that was afraid. Afraid of what might happen if she let someone else in, even Damien.

And then there was the matter of Julian. Of course, he wasn't out of her life. Not yet. She hadn't heard from him since their last confrontation, but she knew he was still out there, still watching, still trying to find a way back into her life. He didn't know how to take no for an answer.

The phone buzzed again, and this time it wasn't from Damien. Vivian's heart skipped a beat as she saw the name on the screen. Julian.

She stared at the screen for several long seconds, unsure of what to do. She had deleted his number, cut ties with him as best as she could. But the message was there, waiting for her. What could he possibly have to say now?

Taking a breath, she opened it.

Vivian, I know we left things unresolved. But I can't stand the thought of you walking away from me. I know I've made mistakes, but I love you. I always have. And I'll always fight for you. I don't care how long it takes. I'll be here, waiting for you.

Vivian's fingers clenched around the phone. The words were the same as always—promises of love and loyalty, but they felt hollow now. His words had lost their weight, their meaning. She had once believed him, once trusted him with her heart, but no longer. The man who had promised her forever was the same one who had shattered everything with his lies.

Please don't do this, Julian. She typed quickly. It's over. I'm done.

She hit send, and then immediately felt a wave of uncertainty. Had she made the right choice? Was she being too harsh, too final? Was there still a chance, a small part of her heart that wanted him back?

No. She couldn't do that to herself. Not again. Not after everything.

Vivian leaned back against the window, staring out into the night. There were moments when she thought about what could have been, moments when she missed the idea of him—the version of him that she had fallen in love with. But the reality was different. The reality was that Julian was toxic. He was a poison that had seeped into her life, and no matter how much she loved him, it didn't change the fact that he wasn't the person she needed him to be.

She had spent so long trying to fix him, to hold on to the idea of them, that she had forgotten what it meant to take care of herself. Now, she had to relearn that. It wasn't about him anymore. It was about her.

Her phone buzzed again, and for a moment, she expected it to be Julian, begging for another chance. But when she checked the screen, she saw it was from Damien.

Just checking in again. You sure you're okay?

Vivian smiled softly, her heart swelling just a little. She hadn't realized how much she needed someone like Damien in her life. He wasn't pushing. He wasn't demanding. He was simply there, offering her a space to breathe. And that was something she hadn't had in so long.

Yeah, I'm okay, she typed back. Just… sorting things out. I'll be alright.

She stared at the screen for a moment, thinking about how best to respond. She wasn't ready to share everything, but maybe one day she would. Maybe one day she would let him in more fully. But for now, she was still healing. She was still finding herself, and that was something she couldn't rush.

Take your time, came Damien's reply. I'm here when you're ready. No pressure.

The simplicity of his words settled over her like a blanket, warm and reassuring. No pressure. No expectations. Just a gentle reminder that she didn't have to do this alone. And maybe, just maybe, that was enough.

Vivian set her phone aside again, turning back to the window. The city stretched out before her, the lights twinkling like stars. She was far from having everything figured out, but for the first time in a long while, she felt like she was on the right path. It wasn't going to be easy, and there would be days when the weight of her past would feel too heavy to carry. But she wasn't alone anymore.

She had Damien. And, more importantly, she had herself.

The next morning, Vivian woke up with a sense of clarity that she hadn't felt in a long time. Her phone buzzed with a text from Damien—just a simple check-in, nothing demanding, just an offer of support. It was exactly what she needed. She could feel herself growing stronger with each passing day. She was still recovering, still healing from the wounds Julian had left behind, but she wasn't broken. Not anymore.

She knew what she had to do next. She had to take the next step forward. It was time to let go of the past and embrace the future.

And the future, for the first time in a long time, felt like it was full of possibilities.
