Chapter 42 - Forty-Two: Hell Hath No Fury (Dom)

DOM

The forest blurred past me in streaks of silver and black. My paws tore through the underbrush, the wind slicing against my fur, but I didn't feel the cold. Or the pain. Or the exhaustion that had been riding me for days.

All I felt was her.

Lena.

Every hour she was gone, something inside me unraveled. Not just frayed at the edges—but ripped. Torn wide open like the world had dug its claws into my chest and refused to let go. I hadn't shifted back in almost two days. I couldn't. I didn't trust myself not to fall apart the second I felt human again.

Because if I did… I'd have to face the silence.

The bond had been quiet for too long. Faint. Like a whisper underwater, always just out of reach. That silence was worse than any wound I'd ever taken—like screaming into the void and getting nothing back. No warmth. No presence. No promise of her still breathing.

Until now.

A flicker.

A heartbeat in the distance that didn't belong to me.
