Chapter 18 - 18-Kaelin's heartache

Kaelin stood alone in the deep cave, surrounded by the silence of the mountain. His eyes gazed out into the distance, where the barren land stretched out as far as the eye could see. But his mind was elsewhere, lost in memories of a time long past.

He remembered the vibrant days when the skies were filled with Shaperlings and Luminari, their forms shimmering and dancing in the light. The air was alive with the sounds of celebration, music, and laughter, as the Eldrians came together to rejoice in the beauty of their world. And at the heart of it all were King Arian and Queen Liberta, rulers who embodied the very spirit of their people.

Kaelin's thoughts turned to the king, a brave warrior with a heart of gold. He had been a just and fair ruler, beloved by all who knew him. And the queen... ah, the queen. She was a shining light, a beacon of kindness and compassion. Her people adored her, and she had been a mother to them all, not just the Eldrians, but the Shaperlings and Luminari as well.

As her Keeper, Kaelin had been honored to serve her, to watch over her and protect her. He remembered the bright days of their reign, when hope and joy seemed limitless. And then, there was the prince, the young boy who had captured their hearts. Kaelin's eyes misted as he recalled the day the prince took his first steps, running to him with a smile on his face. He had been the one to rush to the queen and king, to tell them the news, and see the joy that lit up their faces.

The memories flooded back, bittersweet and poignant. The world had been so full of life and promise, and now... now it was nothing but dust and ash. The silence of the cave seemed to echo with the weight of his grief, a reminder of all that had been lost.

Kaelin's thoughts turned to Norbert, the bitter brother of King Arian. A pang of guilt and anger twisted in his chest as he realized his mistake. He had failed to identify the traitor, blinded by Norbert's charade.

Norbert had been a masterful actor, playing the devoted uncle to Princess Sophia with ease. The king and queen had been completely taken in by his facade, unaware of the true nature of the man they trusted. Kaelin's anger simmered as he thought about how Norbert had manipulated them, using his charm to hide his true intentions.

The fact that Norbert had never married, always citing his devotion to Sophia as the reason, now seemed like a clever ruse. Kaelin's fists clenched as he imagined the traitor's head on a spike, hoisted high above the Eldrian wall as a warning to others.

But most of all, Kaelin was angry with himself. As the Keeper, it was his duty to identify threats and neutralize them. He had failed miserably, and now the consequences of that failure were devastating. The weight of his guilt and anger threatened to consume him, and he couldn't shake the feeling that he would never be able to forgive himself for his mistake.

Kaelin's thoughts were a jumble of emotions as he reflected on the events that had transpired. One thing, however, brought him a measure of relief: the throne had not fallen into Norbert's hands. Despite his best efforts, the traitor had not succeeded in claiming the seat of power.

Instead, Princess Sophia, then just 15 years old, had been crowned ruler. Kaelin remembered the day vividly, as he and Armen had worked tirelessly to ensure her ascension to the throne. They had ignored Norbert's accusations and protests, and the young princess had been crowned with the support of the people.

Her marriage to Malakhai, the youngest general of King Arian's court, had seemed like a wise move at the time. It had brought a sense of stability and security to the kingdom, and for a brief moment, it had seemed like the future was looking brighter.

But, as Kaelin well knew, that sense of relief had been short-lived. Events had taken a darker turn, and the kingdom was once again plunged into uncertainty. The memory of Prince Damien, the beautiful baby boy who had captured the hearts of all, still lingered, a bittersweet reminder of what had been lost.

Malakhai's transformation from a kind and respected general to a ferocious and cruel king was a shocking turn of events. The once-beloved general had become a tyrant, driven by a desire for destruction and chaos.

The Shaperlings and Luminari, creatures that had brought joy and light to the kingdom, were now the target of Malakhai's wrath. The Luminari, with their ability to provide light and happiness to all who surrounded them, were forced to flee or hide, taking their warmth and radiance with them. The Shaperlings, with their incredible ability to shift into various forms and see the truth of all things, were hunted and persecuted.

As a result, the kingdom of Eldrida was plunged into darkness and despair. The land itself seemed to be suffering, as if it had lost its vitality and beauty. The absence of the Shaperlings and Luminari was like a wound that could not be healed, leaving the kingdom a shadow of its former self.

Kaelin's heart ached as he thought about the loss of the prince and the destruction of the kingdom. The land, once full of life and wonder, was now a barren and desolate place. The memory of the happy times, when the Shaperlings and Luminari roamed free, was a bittersweet reminder of what had been lost.
