Chapter 6 - Chapter 6 Expedition to Stones

On a gray evening in the port city of Alexandria, the sea breeze whispered secrets of ancient tales, while the cobblestone streets shimmered under the dim glow of gas lamps. The sky was a canvas of muted grays, hinting at the encroaching twilight, setting an evocative backdrop for the adventures that awaited.

As the sky was adorned with a fading orange hue, Fitran stepped slowly into the Adventurer's Guild headquarters in Alexandria. The atmosphere in the meeting room was filled with laughter and the chatter of adventurers discussing their latest exploits, creating a warm and spirited moment. However, beneath the bustle, Fitran's intentions extended beyond mere small talk; he was searching for the renowned ancient artifact expert, George, to discuss an ambitious expedition aimed at obtaining the heart of the Ancient Golem, the legendary guardian of Stones, who had been dormant for thousands of years. More importantly, he sought to uncover secrets that could reshape history by unveiling new knowledge that could influence the future.

Fitran walked towards a quieter corner of the room, where George, widely known for his deep knowledge of ancient artifacts, was arranging several manuscripts and maps. Although George appeared relaxed in his tattered clothing adorned with the guild's emblem, his gaze reflected the certainty of an expert who had seen and experienced much, adding to the allure of this seasoned individual.

Fitran approached the long wooden table filled with maps and ancient books. He greeted with a wise smile, "Good evening, George. Allow me to convey the purpose of our meeting today. I have heard that your knowledge of ancient artifacts is extraordinary, and I need it for a mission."

The elderly man, aristocratic in appearance with neatly styled silver hair and a curled mustache, wore classic attire, including a long coat with a wide collar, a vest, and a jabot tie. His expression was calm and confident, with one eye closed as if bearing a scar or having lost sight on that side, which added a mysterious aura to this richly experienced character, evoking respect among those who knew him.

"This is not like you," George remarked, alluding to Fitran's demeanor.

Fitran smiled as if wanting to show a different side of himself.

Then George raised an eyebrow while looking at Fitran with a gaze mixed with curiosity and caution. "Ah, Fitran. Good to see you at the last moments of the sun. Tell me, what is the urgency of this mission? I have heard rumors about Stones, but I have never heard a concrete plan like the one you imply."

With a serious tone resonating in the room, Fitran replied, "We will embark on an expedition to Stones, a place rumored to be home to the legendary creature, the Ancient Golem, which, in its long slumber, holds extraordinary secrets. The heart of this creature is believed to possess energy capable of transforming civilization, even challenging the laws of nature with its unexplored abilities. I am confident that, with your expertise in artifacts, we can delve into hidden historical clues, allowing us to explore lore and knowledge that may have remained undiscovered, including its potential impact on our society."

George showed suspicion towards Fitran's strange demeanor.

George then opened one of the ancient manuscripts and looked towards Fitran. "It is true that Stones is known as a place full of mysteries. However, missions like this are never easy. Many have tried, and history records that only a handful have ever succeeded in approaching those secrets. Please explain, how can you convince me that this expedition is not a fatal step? What will we do to handle the existing threats?"

Fitran took a deep breath and spoke in a mix of formal and informal tones, "George, you know I and my companions have faced various obstacles. Although the path we will take is fraught with danger, I believe that with your intelligence and expertise, we will find a way to mitigate the risks. We need a structured plan and artifact data that only you can decipher."

"Stop talking like that, this is not you," George said firmly, his voice breaking the silence that was increasingly enveloping the room.

The atmosphere in the guild headquarters grew tense, with anxious shadows crossing the faces of the adventurers present. Everyone felt the rising tension, as if the air around them was becoming denser and heavier.

The adventurers who overheard the conversation could not help but glance over; they knew how important the mission being discussed was. The evening light that brought a golden hue outside the window gave it an epic feel, as if nature itself supported the steps of the brave preparing to face unforeseen dangers.

George stared at the large map spread out on the table, his eyes tracing the lines depicting the path to the remote region. "Alright, Fitran. Your mission is indeed ambitious. If we are to penetrate the Stones region, we need to consider every possibility. I have some ancient notes that mention the entrance to the golem's underground chamber is hidden among the ruins of an ancient temple. However, the intricacies of that structure remain vague," he said, slightly relaxed yet very meticulous.

"Not to mention, Stones is located at the heart of the Iris River."

"Sending a small group there is too risky, given the potential dangers lurking. We cannot ignore the threats that may arise from that location. The Iris River is filled with mana energy, causing many supernatural creatures to emerge," George continued.

Fitran approached the map and examined it closely. "I have heard rumors about the location of those ruins, but no one has managed to reach them safely. I will need more than just library knowledge. I do not need a group of adventurers for that; I have already thought of who will accompany me, someone reliable and skilled for this dangerous expedition."

George frowned and agreed while putting down his manuscript. "True, I have some small artifacts that are said to detect residual energy vibrations. This will be very useful for tracking ancient traces buried beneath the layers of Stones, as well as protecting you from supernatural creatures. However, that equipment will be useless if we do not understand or read the ancient codes inscribed on the temple ruins. I will gather all previous data and research; every step we take must be meticulously planned, supported by a deep understanding of the historical context behind those artifacts."

"Especially if this involves the great benefits I could gain from this expedition," George added enthusiastically, his eyes sparkling with ambition as he envisioned the treasures they might uncover. His words injected vibrancy into their discussion, stirring imaginations about artifacts and the extraordinary powers that could emerge, where every detail sparked hope and excitement among all involved in this mission.

In the midst of the conversation, the crowd of adventurers passing by could not hide their admiration. Among them, some who had faced similar threats looked on in awe upon hearing the mention of the "Ancient Golem." The previously lively atmosphere turned quieter, as if everyone felt the weight of the responsibility of the mission ahead.

"George," Fitran continued in a sudden serious tone, creating a tense atmosphere, "I need further clarity. What do you believe is the difficulty level for accessing the golem? Should we pursue a direct approach, or would it be wiser to manipulate the ancient energies scattered throughout the location?"

George looked into Fitran's eyes for a moment before answering in a style that was not too formal but calculated, "To be honest, I would recommend a cautious approach. An expedition like this is not just about bravery, but also about precision and skill. We should not disturb the situation if everything is not ready. In my view, understanding the energy patterns enveloping the area will provide us with valuable clues to access without triggering ancient defense mechanisms that could be very dangerous."

Fitran responded with a meaningful smile, "So you are saying we should find the rhythm of nature and follow its flow? I agree, but we must also be prepared for any possibility. The power guarded by that golem could be the key to controlling safety, not just for us, but also for the guild and the entire adventurer civilization that relies on the success of this mission."

The dialogue between them deepened, shifting from theory to practical planning. George pulled out several notes marked with golden ink. "I have noted that there are four phases of energy we must follow. First, determining the location based on natural vibrations. Second, describing the codes of the carvings we must decipher. Third, activating the 'Past Seeker' tool, and finally, the procedure to access the core space where the heart of the golem is hidden."

Fitran interjected with confidence, "Your plan sounds solid. However, what if the defense mechanisms are automatically activated when someone approaches the heart of the golem? We need to develop a protective layer that can stop those mechanisms at least until we manage to approach the heart without disturbing the energy balance, ensuring that every step we take is calculated and prepared for the worst-case scenario."

George put away the notes and smiled while tidying his gray hair. "That is a smart question, Fitran. In the ancient notes I studied, there are indications that the heart of the golem is not only a source of power but also a ruler of the balance between nature and magic. If we can read and operate it correctly, those defense mechanisms might be overcome. However, we must be careful."

A soldier, who had been listening to the conversation with interest, scoffed, "Wow, that doesn't sound like an ordinary mission. Are you sure this isn't a death task? History records many adventurers who never returned from such quests."

Fitran looked at the soldier with a sharp gaze and replied firmly, "Every mission has its risks, but it is this uncertainty that drives us to seek knowledge and power. If we stop trying out of fear of failure, then the entire guild will lose the essence of adventure."

George added, "Moreover, this mission will pave the way for a new understanding of the history of artifacts and the balance of nature. I have spent years delving into the mysteries of ancient artifacts, and my knowledge has never cautioned against the possibility of not overcoming obstacles. We simply need the right strategy and the courage to face the unknown."

"Unfortunately, I do not want to take anyone from this guild there," said Fitran.

The discussion continued with a flow of ideas and in-depth analysis of the ruins' infrastructure, the existence of hidden magical traps, and possible emergency procedures if this mission turned disastrous. Fitran outlined a clear division of roles: some would act as explorers, others as protectors, and of course, George would lead the excavation and analysis of artifacts at the discovered site.

After nearly an hour of intense discussion, George concluded the conversation with a final note. "Alright, then, we agree that this expedition has the following details: First, determining the initial location at the ruins of the ancient temple at the foot of the mountains. Second, using the 'Past Seeker' to detect remaining energy patterns. Third, a cautious approach to entering the core area, where we will take turns observing signs of defense activation. Fourth, emergency alarms and evacuation routes must always be ready at every contact point. I will soon arrange a follow-up meeting to gather the entire support team and prepare the technical details."

The atmosphere in the adventurer's guild, which had previously been lively, suddenly fell silent as if all listeners were absorbing and comprehending the weight of the goals set by Fitran and George. Faces filled with hope and anxiety watched these two figures as they devised a future fraught with challenges and risks.

In an instant, the evening that was initially orange turned darker, leaving long shadows and doubts among the lines of the adventurers' lives. This was the right time to embark on an expedition that could become a turning point in history.

George closed the meeting by stating the final decision, "Alright, if you have made up your mind and feel prepared for this challenge."

Fitran smiled faintly, "Thank you, George. I am confident that with your expertise and intuition, we will be able to complete this mission successfully. May the heart of the ancient golem we seek bring not only power but also a deep understanding of the forgotten secrets of the past."

The dialogue ended with a solid agreement, leaving both in a mix of excitement and tension. They knew that the mission ahead was not just an ordinary adventure, but a journey to unveil the veil of history and challenge the laws of nature that had long settled in the world.

Fitran stepped out of the meeting room with a firm stride, while George remained momentarily lost in thought in front of the puzzling map. Outside, the night began to greet with its chill, but in their hearts, the fire of adventure and knowledge continued to burn, inviting both danger and the grandeur of the hidden world.

The Adventurer's Guild headquarters, which had long been a silent witness to thousands of brave tales, now recorded a new chapter. The adventurers who had previously mingled with laughter and jokes now looked on with hope and trust. The expedition to Stones had been set, and the heart of the Ancient Golem, which had been a legend for thousands of years, now held the key to eternal secrets ready to be uncovered.

In the sudden silence of the night enveloping the guild, George stored all the notes and plans in a neatly arranged wooden chest. He knew that within every line of those notes lay the fate of thousands of adventurers who might soon follow in their footsteps.

George quietly asked Fitran, "Is this for the guild or your personal ambition?" He looked at Fitran with deep doubt.

"It seems you are still withholding something from me," he said with a note of suspicion.

Fitran sighed heavily, his breath echoing in the silence that surrounded them. With a vacant stare.

"I do not understand what you mean," said Fitran, trying to break the tense atmosphere between them.

"Do I seem too formal? Or is something bothering your mind?" Fitran continued, trying to ease the tension between them.

"Maybe it's just my opinion, but your words feel so foreign, as if it's not you who is speaking," George said with a hesitant tone.

"I even forget who I am talking to or if I truly know you. It feels like my mind is betraying me, obscuring reality. Perhaps something is lost in our communication," George continued, expressing his deep confusion about their feelings at the moment, as if they were trapped in a never-ending maze.

Fitran fell silent for a moment, then drew a thin smile that seemed to hold much meaning.

"Do I look like that person?" Fitran asked hesitantly, pointing to a photo hanging on the wall. His expression was a mix of confusion and curiosity, reflecting deep uncertainty.

George glanced at the photo displayed on his desk, his face showing doubt. With a tone full of uncertainty, he replied, "I don't even know who the person in that photo is." The atmosphere felt tense, as if every word spoken vibrated in the heavy air.

"Aren't we friends?" Fitran replied, his voice echoing with a challenging tone, while his expression showed unease, as if questioning the loyalty that was being doubted.

In an instant, the air around them became so thick that George felt a tightness in his chest, as if the weight of unspoken emotions clung to every breath he took.

"Okay, maybe you are overthinking this. Come on, try to relax a little," Fitran said gently, trying to lighten the situation. He wanted to help George regain comfort in his seat, diverting their attention from the tension overshadowing their conversation.

Not long after, Fitran made the decision to leave George alone. With deliberate steps, he descended the stairs, allowing the cool air to flow in, while George remained trapped in a silence thick with tension. The space around him felt increasingly confined, as if the world outside was distancing itself, and shadows of worry began to cloud his mind.

"Is that you, Fitran?" George whispered to the photo, his voice barely audible yet laden with weight. A moment later, darkness enveloped him, and he felt a loss of consciousness as if the dark shadows of the past haunted his mind, conjuring flashes of unforgettable and painful memories.
