Chapter 8 - The Woods

Mya soared into the sky, the breeze pushed her hair from her face. Then she swooped back to earth. However she didn't hit the ground. The nine-year-old glided over short grass and used her legs to launch herself into the sky again. Miko only watched her play on the rope swing.

The sky was overcast even for Oregon. Because of the weather, their mother instructed them to wear sweaters and woolen socks. Miko had to opt for a hoodie because his sweater was ruined when he went digging for Sarah.

"Brother, are you sure you don't want a turn?" Mya asked as she swung from left to right. He nodded. "Why not?" "Someone has to look out for the wolves." He made a claw motion and growled. "Not funny!" she whined. He leaned back, a coy smile on his face. "Is too." "Is not!" "Is too." "Is not!" She now gripped the rope with all her strength. "Cut it out or I'll tell mom," she threatened. "Whatever," he scoffed, "If you can't handle a joke, then fine by me." She huffed in indignation and turned her cheek. A cold breeze tickled his skin. He shuttered and folded his arms in an effort to warm up. Truth be told, wolves was the last worry on his mind.

What is he really? A demon? A fallen angel? Why try to save people if people only viewed him as a freak?

The answers you seek are in the Tree in the woods.

And how exactly was he gonna find this tree?

I will guide you.

Wait, what?

He scanned his surroundings but only saw his sister. "Very funny Mya," he grumbled. "What," she replied. He rose an eyebrow. "Didn't you just talk to me?" "No." He frowned, let out a small "huh" and returned to his thoughts.

I will guide you.

He jumped up and spun about wildly. This voice wasn't like the ones he usually heard. "Who are you?" he whispered. Go into the woods, came the reply. Strangely he felt at peace hearing the voice. Against all better judgement, he obeyed and headed for the tree line.
