Chapter 1 - Struggling to Survive

The dull hum of a broken refrigerator filled the small, dimly lit apartment. A faint breeze crept in through the cracks in the window, barely enough to push away the lingering scent of instant noodles and old coffee. Leo Carter opened his eyes to the familiar sight of the cracked ceiling, a spiderweb pattern of fractures splitting the paint, a reminder of the apartment's age.

It was still dark outside.

He didn't need an alarm clock. His body had learned to wake up before dawn, a habit formed out of necessity. If he wanted a chance at eating breakfast, he had to be up before his mother returned from her night shift at the factory, before his little sister, Mia,

woke up needing to be fed.

Carefully, he sat up from his thin mattress on the floor. The couch had once been his, but he had given it to Mia when the landlord refused to fix the heat during the winter. The floor was rough, uneven, but he was used to it.

Leo glanced over to the couch, where Mia lay curled up beneath a tattered blanket. Her small chest rose and fell steadily, lost in peaceful dreams. He envied that.

Moving as quietly as possible, he made his way to the tiny kitchen, rummaging through the cabinets. There wasn't much—a few slices of bread, half a jar of peanut butter, and a dented can of beans. His stomach growled, but he ignored it.

Instead of eating, he grabbed a single slice of bread and left the rest for Mia. He didn't bother toasting it. Electricity cost money.

Just as he was about to leave for school, he checked the small table near the door. A single crumpled five-dollar bill sat there, left by his mother.

His hand hovered over it. It wasn't much, barely enough for a meal. He could take it. She wouldn't ask.

But he pulled away.

He grabbed his old backpack, its straps frayed from years of wear, and stepped out into the cold morning air.

The streets were already busy, filled with cars honking and people rushing off to work. The world moved forward, but Leo always felt stuck in place, running in circles.

He walked the three miles to school, his usual route winding through back alleys and side streets. The main roads were filled with students wearing clean, pressed uniforms, riding in luxury cars or hopping onto buses with their friends.

Leo didn't belong there.

His uniform was clean but worn, the edges fraying from being washed too many times in cold water. His shoes, once black, were scuffed and dull. He kept his head down, avoiding the stares of students who whispered about the "poor kid who never talks to anyone."

It didn't bother him. Not anymore.

At least, not until he overheard a group of students talking excitedly by the school gate.

"Bro, have you seen the new trailer for Evolvera Online? It looks insane!"

"Yeah, I pre-ordered the Founder's Pack. The in-game economy is crazy—you can literally make real money by playing!"

"Man, I'm gonna be rich!"

Leo stopped in his tracks.

Evolvera Online.

He had heard about it—who hadn't? It was set to be the most advanced VRMMO ever created, using full-dive technology to transport players into a vast digital world where everything was possible. Unlike traditional games, Evolvera didn't lock players into fixed classes. Instead, players could evolve, adapting to their surroundings, learning from their battles, and becoming something entirely unique.

But the biggest appeal?

The in-game currency could be converted into real money.

For most, it was just another game, another way to flex their wealth. But for Leo? It was a chance at something better.

If I could just get into that game…

But reality hit just as quickly.

The headset alone cost over a thousand dollars. The game itself required a pre-paid subscription.

Leo clenched his fists.

He didn't have that kind of money.

That night, after finishing his homework and making sure Mia was asleep, Leo pulled out a notebook.

If he wanted to play Evolvera Online, he needed to earn at least $1,500. He had two weeks until launch.

That meant making around $100 a day.

He wrote down a list of everything he could do:

Fix broken phones and laptops – He was good with electronics, often repairing old tech for neighbors.

Running errands for shop owners – Delivering packages, cleaning up, small tasks.

Reselling cheap items online – Buying and flipping second-hand goods.

Underground gaming tournaments? – A risky option, but some local spots held betting matches for old arcade games.

Leo started waking up earlier, taking on extra repair jobs, and even helping a nearby mechanic in exchange for small cash. Every cent mattered.

After a week, he managed to scrape together $200.

But it wasn't enough.

And time was running out.

That's when fate stepped in.

Walking home late one evening, Leo noticed a commotion near the park.

A group of three older teens had cornered a rich kid near a bench. The boy was tall, dressed in designer clothes, wearing a high-end smartwatch, and clutching a drone controller.

Leo recognized him—Adrian Vale, the son of a wealthy businessman and one of the most popular students at school.

"Just give us your wallet, man. We know you've got cash."

"Screw off," Adrian snapped.

Leo sighed. He didn't care about rich kids. But then, one of the thugs shoved Adrian to the ground, stepping on his expensive drone controller, crushing it under his heel.

Something in Leo snapped.

Before he could stop himself, he picked up a loose trash can lid and hurled it at one of them.

CLANG!

The impact caught them off guard, and in that split second, Leo grabbed Adrian's arm and pulled him up.

"Move!"

The two bolted toward the main road. The thugs didn't bother chasing them. Rich kids weren't worth the trouble if the cops got involved.

Adrian stopped once they were safe, panting.

"What the hell, man? You—" He paused, frowning. "You go to my school, don't you?"

"Yeah," Leo muttered.

Adrian looked at his destroyed drone controller and sighed.

"You didn't have to do that."

"Yeah, well… I hate bullies."

Adrian studied him for a long moment before smirking.

"Alright, Leo. I owe you one."

Leo just shrugged and started walking home. He didn't expect anything from it.

But the next day, a package arrived at his apartment.

Inside was a brand-new Evolvera Online VR headset and a pre-paid game pass.

Leo stared at it, disbelief washing over him.

This was his chance.

He didn't like accepting gifts, but this wasn't just a gift. It was a doorway to a new life.

Taking a deep breath, he put on the headset.

"Welcome to Evolvera Online."

And everything changed.
