"I still believe that nothing justifies him leaving me in Adam's hands. I'd rather die." Anna said and remembered the package containing enough material for an overdose that Jenna had given her. Her father probably wanted her to escape that fate. "But I admit it was a good lesson. Adam awakened feelings in me that I thought I couldn't feel and gave me my most precious possession, my son. He made me mature. Adam transformed me into a woman and removed any trace of the girl in me. He destroyed me in many ways and as I put the pieces back together, I built a different Anna. A woman who will surprise everyone yet."
Genevieve looked down at her nails, as if she hadn't heard a word Anna had said.
"Aren't you going to ask how the people you left behind are? And before I forget, Jenna asked to thank you for making her go to a lot of trouble looking for her cell phone in her room. She made a real mess of it, and then she had to tidy up in a hurry so that no one would get suspicious. I didn't find out until the morning after she ran away, if I'm not mistaken."
Anna smiled and every dark shadow had disappeared from her face. Genevieve knew how to manage feelings like no one else.
"She deserved it. Jenna was defending Kate, and at that moment, I thought that anyone who didn't agree with me was my enemy. That's why I didn't tell her. What did she think of my escape?
"She was very worried. She didn't know how you were going to live. You didn't take any money... I would have helped you. Your father told me that he found you in hospital, but that before that, you stayed in a hotel without many resources, feeling cold, hungry and eating broths... If you had told me that this was your intention, I would have provided you with what you needed so that you wouldn't be in any kind of need until your father came to collect you."
"That's in the past, and I see it as learning. And I stole five thousand dollars from Adam. Didn't Henry tell you to give it back?"
"And what have you learned apart from being an evil person? Do you think I'm an idiot? If I gave the money to Adam, neither you nor I would be here, miss. Or do you think he wouldn't trace the truth in my mind?"
Anna stared at her in surprise.
"Why do you say that? About me becoming evil?"
"Because your gaze is no longer the same as Anna's I last saw in the hospital. Now, not infrequently, I see a dark look in you."
Anna stared at her, wondering how Genevieve could be such an observant person, and at the same time not have noticed and told Jenna, that she lied about the cell phone in the hospital to see her away?
"You... Genevieve, you've always had a strange relationship with Ian... He... I can't understand it. Do werewolves communicate with each other? Isn't it only the Alpha who can have telepathic conversations?"
Genevieve forgot her nails and looked at the door indecisively.
"Yes. And when the Alpha is in battle, he allows all the werewolves to connect to see his every move, but I don't know how he does these things. But Ian... Anna, Ian is much more than just a wolf. He's inherited something from you that can't be passed on to another child, it always belongs to the firstborn. Ian is special in many ways."
"Is he an Alpha?"
"No. But it's not just Alphas who are powerful."
"But why did Ian feel an affinity with you? I confess that I didn't like you very much."
"When he's older, you can ask him that."
Anna nodded in agreement.
"You asked me if I didn't want to know about the people I left behind, and there's one person in particular that I would like to know about."
"Who?"
"Sarah."
Genevieve raised an eyebrow and went to say something, then started laughing at the same time. Anna handed her a handkerchief so that she could pull herself together, frightened by the reaction she had never seen in Genevieve, and as soon as she got herself under control she said what Anna wanted to know.
"She now occupies a very important position in the house. And even though it's been a few months, I feel like asking Adam to send her away. I still suspect that some of the events after you left had her participation.
"What's her position?" Anna asked, ignoring everything else that had been said.
"Adam hired her to wash the toilets in the mansion."
"And you think that's punishment enough for what she did to me?"
"I don't know. It was enough to amuse me. She was always sure that her beauty and 'youth' would never allow Adam to get away from her and... He didn't do it for you. If you want justice against Sarah, get ready, Anna. She's not easy to kill. Do what you have to do. This is between the two of you. But, not just referring to her, don't you believe that a person can change?"
"I believe that we all change and evolve as people, but...not her. You said yourself that you distrust her."
"Well... Everyone in the house started to get sick, except her. And Adam ended up discovering that our illness was coming from the kitchen. The food was being poisoned. And he had put a lot of security in the kitchen. He even forbade her from going in to do anything. But what no one remembered was that Sarah is a dangerous witch who has many resources to do as she wishes. Adam, and all of us, underestimated the witch."
"And you didn't suspect the cooks?"
"No. They also had to be hospitalized. They found the same amount of poison in their blood. Whoever did this wouldn't eat the food."
"So you tortured Sarah to get her to tell you what she'd done?"
"Adam wanted to, but he couldn't. She's a witch and only a mist or another witch can inflict pain on someone like that. Of course, Adam has ideas. He said that even without feeling physical pain, an eye, or a hand, or a foot, would be missed by the witch, but Sarah swore it wasn't her. She claimed that she wasn't allowed in the kitchen, and Adam had to reason with her. He can't punish someone who is innocent in front of the werewolves. They believe her and Adam doesn't want them to think he's unfair right now."
