Chapter 151 - The Target

Anna took a deep breath. She knew who might be out to get her. And she knew why. It was the father of the man she had made her father kill. They wanted to make a trade. They must have suspected by now that the man never left the mansion.

"If it's more dangerous here, changing schools would be a good idea."

"I've already explained why you can't. And, as well as making our lives more difficult, they could enroll too, and then we won't be able to tell them apart. Here, we already know all the faces."

"Do you think my children are in danger?"

"No. The children are a secret. Not even the students here know you have children."

"But I guess it must have been hard not to notice the size of my belly when I came to school. It's impossible to ignore."

"You lost the babies, for all intents and purposes. They know you weren't pregnant for nine months."

"You spread that around, and none of them came to offer their condolences?"

"I asked them not to, because you were very upset. Now they seem to have forgotten that you were ever pregnant."

Anna looked lost and vacant for a few minutes.

"Then I'll have to put up with these people hating me for another two years."

"It could be worse, Anna..." Beth said and her gaze caught her frightened eyes, before she fell to the ground.

Anna rushed to her aid and discovered that she had been shot.

Screaming and crying, she asked someone to call an ambulance. They were soon helped. Anna accompanied her in the ambulance, and for the first time in years, she prayed and asked God not to let her die. She was a good woman and fed her when she was hungry. And, as if that wasn't enough, she took her to the hospital and left her in the care of her health plan. She owed that woman a lot. She couldn't let her die.

She looked at the blood on her hands, and then at herself, but she couldn't tell where she'd been hit, as her blouse was all bloodied up the front. She cried even more. She was sure that the target wasn't her. It was herself. Strange how she didn't hear a shot, nor did she see a suspect who could have done it. It could have been a student with a hatred of immigrants, or it could have been the men Beth was talking about. But she would find the culprit. And he would pay for it. But she made a promise to God that she would seek justice for the culprit, if Beth survived.

Anna was still scared when she saw the ambulance doctors, exchanging discouraging glances between them.

"Don't you dare let her die!" Anna said menacingly.

"Look, miss... Her health insurance isn't good, and because she's an immigrant, they won't give her priority care... I think you know what I mean."

"Have the driver take her to the best hospital nearby." Don't let her die, or you and your families won't be able to get together again at a dinner table!" Anna threatened and reached for her cell phone, not even noticing that they looked at each other with pity.

"There's a hospital five minutes away. That could save her life. But they won't see her with that plan."

"I'll pay a hundred thousand dollars at the reception, just to save her life. I'll pay for the rest when she's not at risk of dying."

 "Can I see your plan?"

"Anna took the card out of her handbag and handed it to the doctor, who looked at her surprised and said something to the driver.

"I'll call the hospital. A team will be waiting for her at the entrance. You'll pay the hundred thousand dollars, and you'll use your plan to get them to accept her at the hospital, okay?"

"Yes." Anna said, feeling her eyes fill with tears and looking for Maxwell's contact.

"She's dying and you're worried about money! What kind of monster are you?" Anna asked, searching through her cell phone, unable to see anything, her vision blurred by tears.

"Miss, I would save her if I had all the resources inside that ambulance, but... I don't."

"Hey, I know, but why doesn't the hospital take care of her first and charge her later?"

They were silent and Anna raised her head, completely forgetting what she was looking for on her cell phone.

 "What's the problem?"

"The problem, miss. It's that your father, the boss of the young woman who was shot, has killed someone from every family in this town."

 ...

Kate went to the staff wing to look for Sarah, and was told that she was with her boyfriend.

Kate didn't like that at all. It was still working time. Adam believed that Jenna was competent and trusted her to take care of everything, but this was proof that she was neglecting her job.

So she went in search of Jenna to put her in her place. She knew she must be in the kitchen, as she spent most of her time there, chatting to the cooks.

His hunch was right. She was peeling potatoes, while chatting to the cooks, who were also sitting at the table, each peeling something and chatting nonchalantly.

"Jenna. I need to talk to you now. Come to the office." Kate ordered haughtily, and went into the study to wait for the housekeeper.

Jenna took her time, and Kate understood why when she came in with her favorite drink and poured it for her. Then she stared at her inquiringly.

"Jenna, Sarah isn't keeping to her duty schedule. How can you let these things happen? My husband's money is not grass. Either she keeps to her schedule, or she'll be sent away."

"Kate... She left with her boyfriend to go to the hospital. I can't stop that. She'll bring the certificate and I'll hand it to you." Kate said, and retreated back to the kitchen.

Kate went into the bedroom, which was already completely devoid of any trace of what had happened there, and sat down on the bed. She didn't feel as comfortable in that house as she had before. Now she felt like an intruder. She wanted Caricatura in her bed, but Adam made it clear that she wouldn't be respected if she continued with the orgy. If Caricatura agreed to be discreet, she would tell Adam that she chose to be his wife and be respected, but he was too loyal and she couldn't forget that Adam couldn't be fooled by a werewolf.
