I have always wondered what makes people act in certain ways, life answered that question for me. The price for this answer was quite expensive, life lessons are something we can't buy with money or gold or anything that's easily acquirable. They are something we have to learn by living each and every chapter of our life. This chapter of my life started with a bathrobe, watching the sunrise with a cup of hot coffee from the balcony of my mansion, which faces the ocean. My secretary called me to give me a small gist of stuff that I have to get done to not screw over my career that is barely hanging by a very thin thread, thanks to the devil that I had made an enemy out of.
People are not born inherently good or evil, they are made that way by the sick twists life throws their way. To summarize everything I have said, people are simple puppets of life hanging by a thread and moved in various directions by some unknown force which is the cause of everything. I am not a big believer in god; the only thing I believe is everything happens for a reason, we may not know good or bad. This is the consolation I give myself when life does not turn the way I want it to. I wore the navy blue suit that I picked out yesterday for this particular occasion. Today is a very important day in my life, the fruit of my ten years of hard work, the day I have been yearning for. I checked my reflection in the mirror one last time, Everything was perfect except for the scar across my left eye, which was out of place since my life is not around some pirate plotline. All my life, I was considered attractive by almost everybody around me, until he came around and gave me this scar. Thanks to this token, he is the first thing that comes to my mind when I look in the mirror every morning.
My secretary came to pick me up, I sprayed my cologne, fastened my watch around my wrist, took myself to the front porch and got into the black car. The trip was more painful than I had imagined. I felt the bullet wound in my right shoulder ache as we pulled up in the parking of our destination. I walked into the flower shop and got a bouquet of white roses, then made my way to the cemetery nearby. The scene was really peaceful, green grass covered in dew, sunlight illuminating the clouds, birds chirping away, I made my way across the marble tombstones to meet the person who I can only see in my dreams every now and then. I placed the bouquet on her tomb and lit some incense sticks to pay her respect as per our tradition. I then got on my knees and began my meditation, mentally telling her how much I regret everything and how much I love her. This is something I have been doing for the last 5 years before every crucial incident in my life. My secretary walked up to me, telling me that it was time to make our way to our next stop. The journey from the cemetery to the parking lot of the secretariat went by in an instant, I could not think about anything with all the nervousness and anxiety flooding my brain.
I walked into the building and was startled by the sudden voice calling my name. I turned and saw my friend walking towards me. he gave me a greeting hug, and we started walking towards the main hall together.
"Is he already in there?" I asked my friend Ralph.
"The white head? Yep. I wonder how such a delinquent is actually punctual at unwanted times," he replied with a facepalm.
I opened the big teak door that led us to the main hall, I couldn't help but notice all the heads turning in our direction. I am usually confident, but for some reason, I was not feeling it today. We continued to the front of our allocated seats, which faced the jury. I was allocated the seat next to the devil himself; Ah, the joy!.
"Will you put that stupid game away, Viktor? it's getting on my nerves. Are you that chill?" I heard an exasperated voice in my vicinity.
I turned to see the tall guy in a black suit with silver hair slicked back and tied with a hair tie. He had his black coolers on and was casually walking in while playing some game on his phone, he was followed by two of his closest aides, one of whom was tall with short black hair and an irritated expression on his face and other was a girl with black hair and purple highlights who wore glasses. He looked up and saw me; he threw a smile in my direction and walked towards me, to which I responded with a curt nod. He pulled the coolers down his nose revealing his ice blue eyes as we shook hands.
"Hold on to it till the end of the ceremony, Drey" He said in a low voice, giving his phone to the irritated guy and taking his place next to me.
"I double-checked the facts and statistics this morning, and I don't see the probability of him winning, yet he is so unbothered. It is putting me on edge," Ralph whispered to me.
"When has he ever been expressive? It is just how he is. Don't think much about it; it is our day today, and our golden era will soon begin," I whispered back, looking at the cross-legged slumped back figure next to me, sitting rather comfortably might I add.
The crowd grew quiet as the jury walked in, and all of us stood up to greet them. The chief of the jury, the governor of the city, began his speech: "Ladies and Gentlemen, We have gathered today to welcome another person into the aristocratic congregation as an Ultra-Elite. They will hold the responsibilities of managing the state's affairs and leading the state towards growth and prosperity. The country's people have all voted, and the first round of the election ended in a tie. The voting body of elites has already cast its votes, and they have been counted. I, Roman St.Clair take the pride and responsibility of appending the next person and, by extension, their family to the registry of Ultra-Elites. I am honored to announce the winner of the election –".
There was a sudden explosion, and the crystal chandelier fell down from the ceiling and shattered. The room filled with smoke, and a group of masked people entered the room through the ceiling. There was heavy panic amongst the crowd. It took me some time to adjust, but before I could react, fireballs were thrown around. And people were casting safety barriers, Ralph cast a wind barrier to deflect the attacks which were thrown our way.
"Come to your senses!" Ralph yelled at me while giving me a good shake.
"They are starting the party without us, huh? Rude!" Viktor drawled out with a scoff while launching a barrage of icicles towards the masked horde of people.
I wanted to hold the people accountable and get some answers out of them. I wanted them alive while the guy next to me was taking them down left, right and center. I wondered if it's because he doesn't want anyone alive who knows who sent them. I leaned close to Ralph and told him to distract Viktor and his minions while I got hold of one of the attackers.
"Eternal whirlwind!" Ralph launched a giant twister of wind currents towards the white-head, while I started chasing a guy with a scar in his left eye, since he was the closest to me.
The guy ran out while throwing electric zaps towards me. I had an artifact which protected me from close-ranged attacks as long as it's not too forceful. The traffic was blocked and the security forces were rushing in with their shields to protect the people inside and to stop people from the outside from forming a crowd.
The chase ended finally when we both reached the open terrace of the secretariat building. I used my vines to wrap that guy up. he was repeatedly trying to cut off my vines with his electric outbursts, but my level was higher, so, eventually, I managed to overpower him into submission. I was about to pick him up from the edge of the terrace to take him for an interrogation, but suddenly, I heard something coming towards me at high speed. Before I knew it, I was pierced near the heart with a dagger and pushed off the building.
