Chapter 16 - Chapter 016: The Beneficiary of the Murder Case

A middle - part hair, triangular eyes, thin lips, a lean build, and about 1.7 meters tall. That was how the landlord described his appearance.

As Di Zhen was walking out of the neighborhood, two policemen walked in. He immediately darted behind a nearby tree and overheard the policemen talking. "That guy surnamed Gao (Gao Weiguang) is so cunning. He has air - tight alibis for all three murder cases. How could an ordinary person remember where they had dinner half a month ago, and he even kept the receipts! I smell something fishy about this!"

"If it really is an exchange killing, the murderers would communicate with each other. We really can't debunk the alibi from half a month ago."

"Lao Gong, who stands to gain the most from Wei Xiang's death?"

"It seems there aren't any real beneficiaries. His factory was never that big. After the boss suddenly had an accident, several major projects fell through, and now they're even planning to file for bankruptcy."

"How much can his son inherit?"

"Just a house. The factory is in the hands of a group of old employees. When his ex - wife took their son to claim the inheritance, the company's accounts were in a complete mess, with tens of millions of unpaid loans. The ex - wife was so scared that she didn't dare to take it. If it really goes bankrupt, just paying off the loans would be a huge headache. It's even uncertain whether she can keep the house."

After the policemen left, Di Zhen came out. Based on what he'd overheard, the police had already come up with the hypothesis of "exchange killing".

Di Zhen's goal in dealing with Gao Weiguang was to make the police spot his flaws. Even if he found the murderer himself, he would eventually hand the person over to the police. He didn't plan to take the law into his own hands and execute the criminal. Di Gong had told him to use the Mind - Control Technique with caution. If he killed someone, no matter how just the motive, in the police's eyes, he'd be seen as an evil person and might end up like his father.

Besides, people who committed such serious crimes would surely be sentenced to death. Why should he do it himself?

This scumbag who "paid homage" to his father. As Di Zhen delved deeper into the case, he grew more and more disgusted with him. After finding him, though he wouldn't kill him, it was possible to give him a good beating.

Di Zhen considered calling the two policemen over to share this clue with them. But then he changed his mind. Policemen were so annoying. They wouldn't be grateful for the information but would keep pestering him with questions.

Moreover, Di Zhen didn't agree with the idea of exchange killing. When he looked into Gao Weiguang's eyes, he saw greed, lust, and timidity, but no sign of murderous intent.

Di Gong once told him that people living in the world would, under any circumstances, suppress the impulse to harm their own kind. Since humans lived in groups, not harming each other was like a lock engraved in their genes, the bottom - line for humanity.

Once someone actively killed another, this inner lock would be broken, and some internal changes would occur. Just like a dog going crazy after eating its own kind, the killer's heart would become alienated.

Di Gong had shown him some videos of death - row inmates before their execution. Some of them laughed, some were silent, and some were numb. Di Zhen could really detect an unusual aura from them, as if there was a sharp knife hidden inside them.

Gao Weiguang hadn't killed anyone. The killer's methods were calm and professional, something a newbie couldn't pull off.

The policeman's words reminded Di Zhen that maybe he could visit Wei Xiang's ex - wife...

After getting the address from the factory, in the evening, Di Zhen arrived at a residential area and knocked on the door of Xu Jin, Wei Xiang's ex - wife. Xu Jin, who had just come back from work, was a bit nervous seeing a tall and big man standing at the door. "Who are you looking for?" she asked.

"Are you Ms. Xu?"

"Yes."

"I'm the accountant at the factory. I happened to go back to my hometown on the day you came."

"Really?" Xu Jin looked skeptical. "You're so young?"

"I'm twenty - five this year." Di Zhen smiled. "No need to open the door. I'll just stand here and tell you. Those guys in the factory went too far. As soon as the boss had an accident, they transferred all the working capital and left you with a pile of debts."

Hearing this, Xu Jin, who had been extremely troubled by the inheritance these days, immediately felt like she'd found an ally and started complaining. "Exactly! How could such a big factory have no money at all? They even said the land and equipment were all mortgaged. Clearly, they're in cahoots to bully us, a widow and an orphan. Come in and sit down."

"No, I'm dirty. I'm afraid I'll soil your floor."

"It's okay. I was going to mop it anyway. Come in!"

Xu Jin opened the door, which meant she'd already trusted this stranger. This was, of course, a trick in Verbal Enticement, known as "Those who share the same sorrow draw closer to each other".

Xu Jin poured Di Zhen a cup of tea and asked how to address him. Di Zhen made up a name on the spot. Just then, a little boy poked his head out from the inner room. Xu Jin told him to greet the uncle. The little boy obediently said hello and then took the opportunity to say, "Mom, can I play the game console for a while?"

"Have you finished your homework?"

"I've finished my Chinese homework. There are still three math problems left."

"Go ahead and play!"

With his mother's permission, the little boy happily went back to his room to play games.

Xu Jin smiled at Di Zhen and said, "When we got divorced back then, I was willing to take a smaller share of the property just to get custody of my son. He's my only hope and the meaning of my life."

"Every mother loves her child," Di Zhen echoed, then got to the point. "Those old - timers at the factory have a lot of seniority and hold a bunch of client information in their hands. The boss has always been wary of them. I've never liked their ways, but I'm young and just out of school. I can't compete with them. When I checked the company's accounts today, it was a complete mess. I've no idea how much money they've embezzled by ganging up on you and your son. I just can't stand it, so I came to discuss it with you!"

"You're such a kind - hearted young fella. Unlike those old slickers who are only after the money... Do you have any suggestions?"

"Let's sue them. What they're doing is illegal. Your child has a legal right to inherit, so you've got a strong case." Although Di Zhen came to gather information, this advice was quite reasonable.

"You're right. I've been thinking about hiring a lawyer."

"May I ask if the boss remarried?"

"Him!" Xu Jin snorted. "When I was pregnant, he got involved with a seductress and kept her on the side. When the affair came out, he asked for a divorce. I was heart - broken. After the divorce, I stopped caring about him. I guess he's still with that seductress!"

"Do you know where she lives? I want to find out if they got married. Also, if the boss bought her a house, legally it belongs to the heirs."

At the mention of the house, Xu Jin's eyes lit up. Without thinking about why an 'accountant' would care about these things, she said, "She lives in Anhui Community, not far from where we used to live. Her name is Fan Yi."
