Chapter 1 - Every hero's light casts a shadow

CHAPTER 1 :The Last Sunset

The day the sun died, **Elias Veyne** was stealing a loaf of bread.

He didn't see the **Celestial Vanguard**—Earth's premier superhero team—battle the cosmic entity **Null** overhead. He only felt the shockwave when **Solaris**, their golden-armored leader, crashed through the bakery's roof.

Null's tendrils of anti-light slithered after her. Solaris locked eyes with Elias—a starving 19-year-old with a criminal record—and did the unthinkable.

She *gave him her power*.

A searing orb of sunlight tore from Solaris' chest and into Elias's hands. *"Don't… let it fade…"* she gasped before Null vaporized her.

Elias screamed as the energy fused with him. His skin glowed like embers; his tears evaporated mid-fall. The last thing he saw before passing out was Null's hollow face recoiling—*from him*.

CHAPTER 2: THE DARKLING

Location: The Ashen Maw (Undercity)

Elias woke in a cell. Across from him, a girl in a tattered hood smirked. *"Congrats, Sunspot. You're the worst heir apparent ever."*

This was **Nyxa**, aka **The Darkling**—a vigilante who could manipulate shadows. She'd dragged him here after finding him smoldering in the rubble.

*"Solaris' power picks hosts based on 'potential,'"* Nyxa said, tossing Elias a file. Inside were profiles of **fallen Vanguard members**, each with a red stamp: **DECEASED**.

*"Null's killing them. And you're next."*

A tremor shook the room. Nyxa's eyes darkened. *"They're here."*

The **Eclipse Syndicate** burst in—mercenaries hopped on stolen Vanguard tech. Their leader, **The Hollow**, wore the armor of **Stratosphere**, a dead hero.

*"The light chooses* weaklings *now?"* The Hollow lunged. Elias's body *reacted*—a solar flare erupted from his palms, melting the walls.

Nyxa yanked him into the shadows as the Syndicate opened fire.

CHAPTER 3: THE SHATTERED VAULT

Location: Vanguard Tower Ruins

Nyxa led Elias to the Vanguard's ruined base. *"They hid the truth here."*

In a shattered vault, they found **holograms of past heroes**—each dying not from Null, but from *their own powers backfiring*.

*"Solaris' light isn't a gift,"* Nyxa said. *"It's a* curse. *The more you use it, the faster it consumes you."*

Elias's hands trembled. His veins pulsed gold.

A voice boomed: *"And yet you took it anyway."*

**Aegis**, the Vanguard's surviving tactician, descended in silver armor. He aimed a pulse-rifle at Elias. *"Solaris disobeyed. We were supposed to let Null win."*

Nyxa hissed. *"You* wanted *the world to end?"*

*"No,"* Aegis said. *"To* evolve. *Null's touch grants true power—ask your 'Syndicate' friends."*

Elias realized: The Syndicate weren't thieves. They were **test subjects**.

Aegis fired. Nyxa shoved Elias aside—the blast severed her right arm.

Elias's vision went white.

Elias's **uncontrolled energy surge** leveled the tower.

When he woke, Nyxa was alive—her wound cauterized—but Aegis was gone.

A **data-chip** in the rubble showed a map to **The Core**, Null's prison beneath Skyhaven. Nyxa coughed: *"We burn it down."*

Elias helped her up. *"We're not heroes."*

*"Exactly,"* Nyxa said. *"That's why we'll win."*

CHAPTER 5: NYXA'S SHADOW

Elias and Nyxa retreated to an abandoned subway tunnel—her "home" since the Vanguard fell. The walls were covered in scrawled notes about Null and newspaper clippings of missing heroes.

Nyxa slumped against a rusted train car, clutching her severed arm. Elias tried to heal her with sunlight, but his power flickered.

*"Stop wasting it,"* she hissed. *"You'll burn out faster."*

Elias gritted his teeth. *"Why help me? You clearly hate the Vanguard."*

Nyxa's shadow stretched unnaturally long. *"Because Solaris was different. She* protected *people. The others… they were just* soldiers."

A glitchy hologram projector sparked to life, revealing a woman in black armor—**Umbra**, Nyxa's mother.

*"She was the first to defy Aegis,"* Nyxa whispered. *"He called her a traitor. Null* consumed *her."*

Elias realized: **Nyxa's shadow powers were fragments of Null itself.**

CHAPTER 6: LIEUTENANT DAWN'S FALL

### **Scene 1: The Hollow's Revelation**

The Syndicate cornered them in a flooded reactor chamber. The Hollow removed her helmet—revealing **Lieutenant Dawn**, Solaris' former second-in-command.

*"You don't understand, kid,"* Dawn rasped. Her eyes were voids. *"Aegis promised us power. But Null* corrupts *everything it touches."*

She lunged, her armor firing **anti-light projectiles**. Elias barely deflected them, his arms blistering.

### **Scene 2: The Mercy Kill**

Nyxa, barely conscious, whispered: *"She's begging you to end it."*

Dawn froze mid-strike, tears cutting through the grime on her face. *"I can't… stop it…"*

Elias **channeled Solaris' last gift**—a single, focused beam through Dawn's heart. She smiled as she disintegrated. *"Tell Solaris… I'm sorry."*

**Aftermath:**

- Elias's **golden veins darkened**.

- Nyxa's shadow arm **grew more tangible**.

- A **data-chip** in Dawn's armor revealed Aegis' location: **The Core**.

CHAPTER 7: AEGIS' GAMBIT

**Scene 1: The Offer**

Aegis awaited them in a ruined cathedral, Null's **pulsing mass** chained beneath the altar.

*"You could've been great, Elias,"* Aegis said. *"But you're just another* candle *waiting to burn out."*

He offered a deal:

- **Merge with Null willingly**, and Nyxa goes free.

- **Refuse**, and Null consumes the city.

Nyxa laughed. *"He's lying. Null's hunger never stops."*

### **Scene 2: The Betrayal**

Aegis **activated a failsafe**—Nyxa's shadow powers **rebelled**, binding her.

*"You're a virus, Nyxa,"* Aegis said. *"A scrap of Null that* remembers *being human."*

**Elias's Choice:**

He **let his power surge**, burning Aegis' armor—but the backlash **cracked his ribs**.

Nyxa broke free, snarling: *"Run, Sunspot. I'll hold him."*

**Cliffhanger:**

The cathedral collapsed as Nyxa **dragged Aegis into the shadows**.

CHAPTER 8: THE CORE BATTLE

**Scene 1: Nyxa's Sacrifice**

Elias found Nyxa at The Core's edge, her body **half-consumed** by Null.

*"Took you long enough,"* she coughed. *"I can't… hold it…"*

Null's form **twisted**—a **face** flickered in the darkness. **Umbra's face.**

Nyxa screamed: *"NOW, ELIAS!"*

### **Scene 2: The Final Light**

Elias **absorbed every drop of Solaris' power**, becoming a **human supernova**.

- **Aegis** tried to stop him—Null **imploded**, crushing him.

- **Nyxa's shadow half** **anchored Null** as Elias unleashed the light.

- The blast **shattered The Core**, but not before Null whispered: *"You will* fade *too."*

**Aftermath:**

- Skyhaven's **sun returned**.

- Elias **collapsed, powerless**.

- Nyxa **vanished into the smoke**.

CHAPTER 9: THE GRAY

The first thing Elias registered was the scent of antiseptic.

His eyes fluttered open to the sterile white ceiling of a Skyhaven hospital. Every muscle in his body screamed in protest as he tried to sit up. A nurse in blue scrubs rushed to his side, her gloved hands pressing gently against his shoulders.

*"Easy, Mr. Veyne. You've been unconscious for three days."*

Elias' throat was sandpaper. *"Nyxa—the girl I was with—"*

*"No one else was brought in with you,"* the nurse said, adjusting his IV. *"But…"* She hesitated, then lowered her voice. *"There are rumors. A figure in the slums, moving through the shadows. They're calling her 'The Gray.' She's been pulling people from collapsed buildings, vanishing before anyone can thank her."*

Elias closed his eyes. *Of course she survived. Stubborn to the end.*

Through the window, he saw Skyhaven's skyline bathed in golden sunlight for the first time in months. Crowds cheered in the streets below, celebrating the "Miracle Dawn." A news report played on the wall-mounted screen:

*"—Vanguard spokesperson confirms Aegis perished stopping the so-called 'Null Crisis.' Memorial services for Solaris and Lieutenant Dawn will be held—"*

Elias ripped out his IV.

CHAPTER 10: SYNDICATE'S RETURN

The orphanage was burning.

Elias sprinted through the smoke, his powerless body achingly slow compared to what it once was. The Hollow's old safehouse—now repurposed as a shelter—was engulfed in unnatural black flames that emitted no heat.

A sobbing caretaker grabbed his arm. *"They took her! The little girl with the—the* eyes*!"*

Elias' stomach dropped. *Not again.*

He followed the trail of destruction to the sewers, where Syndicate graffiti marked the walls—a twisted sun eclipsed by a clawed hand. Deeper in, he found their new hideout: a repurposed Vanguard storage vault.

Three Syndicate grunts stood guard, their armor jury-rigged from scavenged tech. Elias ducked behind a broken generator, assessing his options. No powers. No weapons. Just the dim glow of emergency lights reflecting off a shattered data-pad at his feet.

Then he recognized the file on-screen:

**SUBJECT: K-7**

**STATUS: STABLE NULL-CARRIER**

**NOTES: MANIFESTING TELEPATHIC RECALL OF PREVIOUS HOSTS**

A child's voice echoed from the vault: *"You will fade too."*

Elias moved.

CHAPTER 11: THE SPARK

The vault door exploded inward under Elias' shoulder charge.

Six Syndicate operatives whirled, weapons humming to life. At the room's center stood a girl no older than eight, her irises swimming with fractal darkness. The lead operative—a hulking brute with a plasma saw—grinned.

*"Look boys, the* has-been *hero came to—"*

Elias' fist connected with his jaw. The impact sent white-hot pain up his arm, but the man staggered. A gun barrel pressed against Elias' temple.

*"Pathetic,"* sneered the gunman. *"Solaris' power wasted on a* street rat*."*

The child spoke again, her voice layered with something ancient: *"He burns still. Beneath the skin."*

Elias' vision swam. For a heartbeat, he felt it—the ember buried in his chest. He grabbed the gunman's wrist.

*"Yeah.* Let's *test that."*

Golden light erupted from his palm. The gunman screamed as his weapon superheated. Elias wrenched it away, swinging the molten barrel into another operative's ribs.

But the surge faded fast. Elias collapsed to one knee, veins burning. The brute recovered, raising his plasma saw—

—only for the shadows to *coil around his throat* and *snap his head sideways.*

A familiar voice chuckled from the darkness: *"Took you long enough, Sunspot."*

Nyxa stepped into the flickering light. Her right arm was now pure shadow, tendrils retracting from the dead brute. The remaining Syndicate fled.

The Null-touched child stared at them. *"The light and the dark. Balance."* Then she passed out.

Nyxa caught her before she hit the floor. *"Kid's heavier than she looks."*

Elias wheezed. *"You're alive."*

*"Mostly."* She tilted her head. *"You're* not."*

He followed her gaze to his own hands. The golden glow beneath his skin was *gone.*

Nyxa shouldered the girl. *"Come on. I know a place."*

As they vanished into the tunnels, Elias' shadow stretched unnaturally long behind him—and for a second, it *waved.*

CHAPTER 12: DAWNBREAK*

**One Year Later**

Elias tends a rooftop garden in the rebuilt slums. Nyxa—now called **The Gray**—watches from the shadows.

A child tugs Elias' sleeve: *"Are you a hero now?"*

He smiles. *"Nah. Just a guy who hates waste."* (He gives her the last bread roll from his basket.)

Later, Nyxa murmurs: *"The Syndicate's regrouping. And Aegis' body was never found."*

Elias watches the sunset. *"Then we'll be ready."*

In the dying light, his fingertips **glow faintly gold**.
