The night had fallen like a shroud over the Ural Mountains, the thick snow crunching underfoot as the group trudged onward. Igor, the most experienced of the hikers, glanced back at the others, his breath visible in the freezing air. They'd been out here for days, longer than they'd planned. Their goal was simple,a trek through the remote wilderness, a challenge to their limits. They hadn't expected it to end like this.
"This doesn't feel right," said Tanya, her voice trembling. She rubbed her arms as if to ward off the chill that seemed to seep deeper than the cold could explain.
Igor didn't respond. He, too, could feel the weight of something watching them. Something that wasn't the usual isolation of the mountains. The eerie silence that surrounded them,no animal sounds, no wind... was wrong.
But they pressed on, pushing through the darkness. Soon, the forest thickened, towering trees like skeletal giants casting twisted shadows over the trail. Then it came.
A low hum, vibrating through the ground beneath their boots. At first, Igor thought it was the wind, but it was too… structured. Too deliberate. The hairs on the back of his neck stood up. He turned to the others, but no one had noticed.
Then came the thud.
A single, powerful thud that seemed to shake the very earth. The ground under Igor's feet trembled as if something massive was moving just beneath the surface.
"Tanya, did you hear that?" he whispered, a chill running down his spine.
But she didn't respond. Her wide eyes were fixed ahead, staring into the blackness. The humming grew louder now, almost like a low growl. Tanya's breath quickened.
Before anyone could speak, there was another thud, louder this time. The snow under their feet cracked as something moved through the woods a heavy, deliberate step, like the weight of something ancient.
"Get back!" Igor shouted, but it was too late.
A shadow, larger than any man, loomed through the trees. Its shape was indistinct, but it was huge, twice the size of a bear, with long, gnarled arms swinging as it moved closer. A deep, resonant growl shook the air, its source impossible to identify.
And then, silence.
The group stood frozen, fear holding them in place, until the ground vibrated once more a shuddering growl echoing through the trees. Tanya screamed.
They ran. As fast as they could, through the snow, through the trees, but the sound followed them, each step of the creature pounding through the woods, getting closer. Igor could feel the terror seeping into his bones as the night stretched on, cold and endless.
They reached the cliff's edge, where they'd set up camp earlier that day. But the creature was upon them. The ground shook again, and a massive figure stepped into the clearing, its form now illuminated by the faint light of their lanterns.
It was a thing out of nightmares towering, covered in fur, with glowing yellow eyes that reflected the darkness. The low growl came from its chest, like the rumble of thunder. Then, with a roar that sent the rest of the group into a frenzy, it lunged.

The Truth
The next morning, when the rescue team arrived, all they found was a trail of blood and broken snow. No bodies, only scattered supplies.
It wasn't until weeks later, when a hiker's camera was recovered, that the truth emerged. Footage from the final moments showed a creature tall, muscular, and covered in dark fur, standing in the shadows just outside their camp. It wasn't a yeti, nor a bear, nor any creature known to man.
The data collected from the area was analyzed. Cold-adapted, highly territorial, and equipped with a deep, resonating vocalization, scientists would later conclude that the creature was a survivor of Gigantopithecus a prehistoric ape thought extinct for thousands of years. This version, however, had adapted to the harsh conditions of the northern mountains, evolving features to withstand the cold. Its infrasound ability explained the strange disorientation the hikers experienced before they ran into the wilderness.
What had begun as an adventure had become a deadly encounter with an ancient creature, living in silence for centuries, hidden from the world.
