Her mother had her head down in silence, the atmosphere in the living room turning frozen.
Jessie knew her mother still hadn't made up her mind.
Although she was angry, only her mother could make the final decision.
“Mom, remember, nannies can easily get paid more than this. They’re just taking advantage of your kindness and think you’re easy to bully, even ignoring your efforts. We need to stand tall and tough when the situation calls for it. Call me if you have any issues.”
She gave her mother some advice before leaving.
Thinking about Laura’s situation at home made Jessie feel troubled and helpless. She couldn’t simply take her away by force—Luke was still her child, after all.
She arrived at her shop with a heavy heart.
In the evening, Jessie was about to close up and go clean up in the back kitchen when she heard a commotion at the door.
Assuming a customer had arrived, she hurried out with a welcoming smile. But the moment she saw who it was, her smile froze and twisted into hatred.
“What are you doing here?”
It was none other than her ex-boyfriend, Martin Shawn.
After seeing his true colors, she found him more disgusting than maggots.
Martin walked up and grabbed her wrist shamelessly. He began, “Jess, I admit it was my fault before. Please forgive me. I don’t mind that you kissed someone else in front of me. We’re even now. So let’s be together peacefully from now on, okay?”
He sounded sincere, but he was only back for Jessie because his boss's daughter had no interest in him at all.
Jessie refused without hesitation, shaking off his hand with disgust in her eyes. “Get out; you’re not welcome here. And don’t forget that we already broke up, so leave me alone.”
However, he wouldn’t give up and came closer to touch her.“Jess, I know you are angry at me. I'm sorry; I made a mistake back then. Can't we just let bygones be bygones?”
“Who the hell wants to let bygones be bygones with you? Get lost!” She was repulsed by his touch, pushing him away.
Martin staggered back a few steps, surprised by her reaction. Then, his expression suddenly changed.
“Jessie! I'm already trying to reconcile with you, so stop being so ungrateful!”
She rolled her eyes at him and replied,“I’m already married!”
He laughed mockingly and said, “Stop kidding me. Who could you marry in such a short time? Show me your husband if you have the guts to!”
“I’m her husband.”
Hearing the voice at the door, Jessie and Martin looked over at the same time.
They saw Kevin, who had somehow arrived and was standing at the entrance. His tall and muscular figure made Martin turn wary.
Kevin quickly walked up to Jessie, looking down and asserting dominance over Martin with silent pressure, and Martin was stunned in place.
When he finally spoke up, Martin recognized Kevin as the person he saw at the hospital and immediately began yelling at Jessie.
“Jessie, you bitch, you do have some nerve! We dated so long, and I couldn’t even hold your hand, but you easily married a man you only met once!”
Jessie’s gaze was cold as she said, “You’re not welcome here. Please leave!”
Martin glared at them viciously. Instead of leaving, he sat down on a chair inside and knocked on the table.
“Sure, I’ll leave. But I should get some breakup compensation over our long relationship, right?”
She had never seen such shamelessness before.
He was the one who betrayed her, but now he was asking for compensation?
“I’m not asking for much—just fifty thousand dollars, and we'll call it even,” he said nonchalantly.
She laughed in anger at the amount.“What a joke! Fifty thousand? You might go rob a bank instead. I don’t have money for you!”
“No money?” He sneered before looking at Kevin. “Aren’t you her husband? You can pay for her.”
Jessie retorted before Kevin could reply, “He is a repairman. How could he have that amount of money?”
Martin looked at Kevin and burst into laughter. “Jessie, you’re really stupid! Do you really think this guy is only a repairman? He is richer than you can imagine!”
“I saw him getting into a Maserati with my own eyes!”
He clicked his tongue twice and continued, “You should be thanking me. If not for me, you would have been kept in the dark about your so-called husband.”
“A Maserati?” Jessie rolled her eyes, clearly not believing a single word he said.“What nonsense are you spouting?”
Martin got even more excited by this.
"Why would I lie? I saw it myself that day at the hospital. That old man was a super rich guy from a big family. As for this guy here, all the nurses were calling him President Harper! I’m pretty sure his family even owns that hospital. I swear, if I’m lying, let a car hit me the moment I step out!"
Jessie frowned, turning to look at Kevin.
“Is what he said… all true?”
Kevin scratched his head awkwardly and trailed off.“Well…”
