Chapter 2 - THE STRANGER AND THE SIGHT

The cozy café 'Beans and Blossom', tucked away in the heart of the city, was a hidden gem, lush with greenery that gave it a peaceful, almost magical feel. Unlike the usual touristy spots in Nainital, this place was one of the favorite spot among regulars, offering just the right amount of liveliness without ever feeling crowded. The air carried the rich aroma of freshly brewed coffee, mingling with the sweet scent of pastries and muffins, making it nearly impossible for anyone passing by to resist stepping in. Sunlight filtered through the glass windows, casting a golden glow over the wooden tables and chairs, adding to the café's warm and inviting charm.

There conversations flowed easily... students hunched over their books, professionals took a quiet break from work, and old friends caught up over steaming cups of coffee. Past noon, Aara was at her usual place behind the cash counter, checking latest bills and making sure everything was in order. Every now and then, her eyes flickered toward the tables, taking in the familiar mix of customers— young students, working professionals, and retirees, all adding to the gentle hum of life that made the café feel like home.

On the other side of the counter, Minnie was, as usual, bustling around, passing ingredients in the kitchen, arranging paper coffee cups in neat yet animated stacks, anticipating the needs of the café's patrons. She was the dynamic force behind the scenes, ensuring the coffee flowed freely, and the pastries remained fresh and inviting.

In the midst of this organized chaos, the world outside seemed to fade away until a sudden, unexpected interruption disrupted their routine. A hand extended before Aara's eyes, holding a delicate red rose.

"Hello, Buttercup" a warm, manly voice rang out, laced with playful familiarity. Aara, who was totally immersed in her work, couldn't help but release an exasperated sigh. She raised her eyes, which held a subtle glare, meeting the source of the interruption.

Ransh, a young man in his college years, was a picture of charm. Tall and well-built. He was not just effortlessly attractive but also had a charming smile that could melt anyone's heart. His presence exuded confidence without arrogance, making people feel comfortable around him. He had a big crush on Aara, the enigmatic friend who kept him in the 'just friends' zone, but he is not one to give up, waiting for the day when she will see him in a different light.

Though the rose's recipient didn't seem pleased, Minnie, who had peeked around through nearby corner to investigate, couldn't contain her grin after hearing the name 'Buttercup', a spark of recognition and amusement on her face, momentarily drawing her away from her task.

"Hey Ransh! On time, hun," she chimed as he turned towards her with his famous smile, while Aara discreetly returned to her bills, hoping to escape the impending conversation, which was next to impossible.

"Of course, how can I miss?" Ransh replied in his usual cheerful tone, his eyes inevitably drifting towards Aara, who knew what was coming but still tried her best to ignore the situation.

"115 right?" Minnie asked with a playful grin, her voice carrying a hint of mischief.

Ransh couldn't resist playing along, his voice intentionally louder. "Nooo! It's 145!" His sudden burst out turned customers attention towards their little exchange and Aara found herself closing her eyes in embarrassment.

Minnie, however, feigning confusion, chuckled, giving Aara a playful nudge. "Really? I forgot the counting."

Noticing her friend lack of enthusiasm, she took the opportunity to offer some teasing advice. "Miss, do you really think you're a queen, or are you waiting for some king to ask you out? Why don't you say yes to him already? He's gifted you 145 roses already. What are you waiting for, him to buy you a garden?"

Aara hushed her, glancing towards the nearby customers with a finger on her lips, signaling the need for discretion. Ransh, on the other hand, could only shake his head with all smiling, his face sat under his palm.

"Can't you be quiet, Minnie? Look where we are" Aara said little annoyed.

Minnie, undeterred, leaned closer to Aara with a sly smile. "Oh, come on, Aara. I've seen the way he looks at you, the way he cares for you. There's a garden of roses in his heart just for you, right Ransh?"

Ransh couldn't resist flirting further, his voice taking on a tone of playful allure. "She got a point. My heart's like a botanical garden now, and you, Miss Aara, are the rarest bloom."

Aara trying to keep her composure, ignored his comment and focused back on the bills. "Ransh, you can't just buy me over with roses."

"But it's a pretty good start, don't you think?" Minnie couldn't resist supporting Ransh, a mischievous twinkle in her eye.

Aara sighed, giving in to a small, reluctant smile. "You both are impossible. Let's focus on work, shall we?"

Minnie, with her mischief-laden tone, added fuel to the fire. "Yes, of course, Ma'am. We should focus on work, especially you. Ask the customer what he wants. You should fulfill his wish."

Aara shot a brief look at Ransh, who was regarding her with an expression that seemed to say, 'Why not?' Their eyes met, and his small smile grew into a more significant one.

Aara resigned herself to the inevitable. "What would you like to order?" she asked, making sure to emphasize the word "order" to avoid any playful misinterpretation.

Ransh stood up straight, his wide smile beaming. "For now, a Cappuccino will work."

Aara nodded, maintaining her professionalism. "Okay, please wait for a moment."

She turned her attention to Minnie, who was ready to prepare the order. Aara had clearly steered the conversation back to work, ensuring that there was no further flirtatious undertones that could distract them... at least for now.

Minnie, catching on to Aara's intent, sprang into action, nearly bouncing like a energetic rabbit as she dashed off to prepare the cappuccino, leaving the other two with their own dynamics. The café, once again, buzzed with activity as the day carried on, customers and staff mingling amidst the aroma of coffee and the chatter of friendly banter.

............

As evening approached, Aara managed to immerse herself in the daily routines of the café, momentarily putting aside the significance of the date. It felt like any other day, a sanctuary of normalcy in her life.

But just when she had almost forgotten the unique importance of this day, a group of children entered the café, accompanied by two middle-aged women who seemed like they might be the mothers of some of the kids. The lively chatter and laughter of the children filled the air, making Aara's smile widen as she recognized the potential for a significant order.

The women approached her, and one of them explained the reason for their visit - a birthday celebration. A sudden jolt coursed through Aara. The moment she heard the word 'Birthday' her smile dimmed as memories came rushing back like a tidal wave.

Her hands trembled slightly, but she fought to regain her composure. She had to maintain the facade of normalcy, even as a subtle fear washed over her. With a faint smile, she replied, "Of course, we'd be happy to help with your celebration. Please, have a seat."

The women continued discussing the party details while Aara nodded along, her mind struggling to stay present. The café buzzed with cheerful energy, the warmth of laughter and the clinking of cutlery filling the space. But for Aara, the walls were closing in.

A slow suffocating panic unfurled inside her, coiling tighter with every passing second. Her breathing grew uneven. Her heartbeat pounded against her ribs, an erratic rhythm she couldn't control. A thin sheen of sweat dampened her forehead, as the memories of the past and the impending significance of her 21st birthday loomed over her like a shadow she couldn't escape.

Minnie, ever attentive to her friend, noticed the sudden change in Aara's demeanor. Concerned, she leaned closer to her and whispered, "Aara, are you okay?"

Aara, still struggling to maintain her composure, barely heard her. "Yeah," she managed, though the word came out weak, unconvincing. But as the chorus of children singing the birthday song filled the café, she found it increasingly difficult to bear.

Without looking back at Minnie, she abruptly left her post at the counter, her only thought to escape from there.

At that very moment, as Aara hurried toward the exit, a striking young man in his mid-twenties strolled into the café. His presence was magnetic, effortlessly commanding attention. Dressed in sharp office attire, his tailored suit accentuated a fit, powerful frame. Confidence radiated from him, his strong jawline and dark, well-groomed hair adding to his undeniable appeal. His deep, enigmatic eyes swept across the room with quiet authority, as if he was accustomed to being noticed.

Aara however, didn't see him.

In her desperate attempt to escape the confines of the café, she collided with him, hard. Their hands brushed against each other sending a jolt through her body, a fleeting touch that felt strangely electric.

And then...

A vision.

Aara's surroundings melted away, replaced by chaos.

A highway. The screech of tires. The defeaning crash of metal against metal. Shattered glass flying. Black smoke curling into the air as twisted wreckage littered the road. Screams. Panic. People running, some helping, others frozen in horror.

The scene gripped her mind in a vice, vivid and terrifying.

Then, as suddenly as it came, the vision vanished.

Aara's staggered back, gasping as her senses reeled. Her wide eyes met with the man before her. His gaze, dark and unreadable, held an intensity that sent another shiver through her. Did he saw it too?

The collision, coupled with the shock of her vision, proved too much for Aara to handle. Her legs grew weak, and she started to crumple to the ground. In that very heartbeat, the young man's sturdy arms closed around her, steadying her before she could hit the floor. It was as if destiny had brought them together at this unexpected crossroads.

For a moment, everything stilled. The café, the voices, the world itself. It all faded into the background. The only thing that existed was the stranger holding her, his grip firm, his presence grounding.

Aara fainted in the man's arms, the world around her blurring into darkness. And just like that, Aara's life took a mysterious turn, unshering her into a mystery far greater than she had ever imagined.
