Chapter 4 - The Warning

Dax's POV

The shadows of the alley loomed, wrapped in a palpable tension as I stepped into the familiar streets, my heart a merciless drum in my chest. Flickering neon lights cast a ghostly glow, fighting the approaching darkness that threatened to swallow me whole.

I had just left Zephara, her bright green eyes etched into my mind, igniting energy in a way I fought to understand. The lab had been a whirlwind, with the smell of chemicals clinging to my hands, blending with my increasing anxiety regarding her safety.

Tall and imposing, I held the weight of my heritage in my stance, jet-black hair framing sharp blue eyes and the tattoo of a wolf coiled on my forearm, reminding me daily of the beast within. But with that strength came weakness, emerging like a shadow I couldn't shake.

Doubt wrapped around my heart, a crushing feeling that left me gasping. Had I crossed a line in trying to save her? Would she see me as a guardian or a danger? I fought against the urge to turn back, knowing that the streets held shadows threatening to keep me from her safety.

But then a chilling howl sliced through the thick air, a physical warning that the very darkness I battled against wasn't a figment of the past; it was living, breathing, and coiling around Zephara. Panic sparked as I ran back towards her, lungs burning, desperate to protect the light that threatened to flicker out.

When I pushed open the door to the lab, fear wrapped around me like a smothering blanket. "Zephara!" I shouted, running through the chaos of papers and glass bottles. The minutes stretched forever as dread pooled in my stomach. She had to be safe.

In her office, the remains of the experiment lay scattered across the floor, sketches describing her Noctra serum, and notes strewn across the couple of tables like falling leaves. But where was she?

"Dax!" Her voice came from a side room, haste running through her call. I dashed toward the sound, every instinct honed to protect her, an almost primal desire to ensure she was unhurt.

As I reached the doorway, a low growl rang ominously. I froze, barely managing to balance the blade in my hand, my heart beating at a frantic pace. Shadows danced along the edges, a warning that we weren't alone.

In a flash, the growl transformed into a furious roar, and the Noctra burst into the room, a nightmarish version of humanity, more beast than man. Its golden eyes glittered with venom, focused on Zephara.

"Get away from her!" I shouted, lunging forward, my body fueled by fear and anger. The specter of my past grew bigger as everything around me began to blur.

The Noctra advanced, the light glowing against its long, sinewy body as it prepared to strike. I positioned myself protectively in front of Zephara, each beating echoing with the urgency of life.

"Dax, we have to get out of here!" she pushed, her voice barely a whisper beneath the roar of the thing. The adrenaline rushed through my blood, sharpening my senses. "No," I grunted, ready to face the monster. I wouldn't let fear control my deeds.

With a wild scream, the Noctra lunged at me, its claws sparkling as it veered toward my chest. I sidestepped, barely missing its deadly strike, anger surging through my body like wildfire. "You won't take her!" I shouted, my voice ringing out against the chaos.

"Dax, please be careful!" Zephara's voice, laced with a mix of worry and fear, heightened my protective senses. But I couldn't let her get caught; the shadows of the past threatened to rise again.

The chaos spun, each movement punctuated by the rush of energy. I dodged the clawed strikes, hitting back with my blade, the understanding we were fighting for something bigger making my resolve ironclad.

With each clash, I felt the heat radiating between me and Zephara, an urgent link formed in the chaos of battle. "We need to get out of here!" I yelled, urgency pushing us forward. Together, we moved, darting down the maze of hallways amidst breaking glass.

With the high-pitched crash of breaking glass behind us, I pulled Zephara closer. "Follow my lead!" I shouted, traveling through the chaotic sanctuary of debris. The light cast shadows across her face, and I saw the flicker of determination sparking in those green eyes.

We pushed through the door to a dim hallway, the dull thud of our footsteps ringing as we rushed toward the exit. I could feel the heat of her presence against my arm, a stark warning that her life was intertwined with mine. Each breath felt heavier as I focused on the escape, aware of the danger stalking us constantly.

"Are you okay?" I glanced back at her, feeling the wave of protectiveness rush through my chest. "Just keep moving!" she insisted, her voice calm despite the fear coming from her.

As we burst into the back alley, the chill of night rushed against my skin, emphasized by the beating of my heart. I could feel the weight of Zephara's breath synchronizing with mine, the link growing as we faced whatever darkness awaited us next.

"Stay close!" I ordered, racing forward into the empty streets, every sound heightened under the veil of night. I could feel the shadows closing in, the darkness almost alive, wrapping around us as we ran toward what lay ahead.

But then, a flicker of movement caught my eye, and fear gripped my heart. "Dax!" Zephara's voice pierced the night. I turned to see another Noctra hiding in the darkness, its eyes glowing with malignant hunger, a reminder of the fears I had from my youth.

My blood ran cold, memories of my past rushing back. Every impulse screamed at me to protect her. "Run!" I yelled, my body moving before I even processed the order, anger igniting a fire within me.

The Noctra lunged, and in that moment of chaos, the air erupted with strain. Zephara didn't need to be told twice; she raced alongside me, the gap between us shrinking as adrenaline surged through our veins.

"Stay behind me!" I ordered, my muscles coiling like a spring, ready to fight. But as we ran, I couldn't shake the feeling, a familiar sense of being watched, an animal watching its prey. The hunt wasn't just for life anymore; it was about facing the darkness of my past.

Suddenly, another howl rang through the streets, and fear pooled in my stomach. This fight was only the beginning; I could almost hear the specter of my mother's words ringing in my ears.
