Chapter 13 - Chapter 13

Allison's POV

I can't see a damn thing.

We had been driving for a while. The anticipation of not knowing where we were going was killing me, but it did give me time to think about the deal I had made with Mason.

I really liked him, and he satisfied me in ways no one ever had. He made perfect boyfriend material. Hell, he was the kind of guy you would want to make babies with.

But I liked my life the way it was...I mean is! I like my life the way it is...

Ugh....do I even know what I want anymore?

Not even a week ago, I was telling Katie that she was crazy, and I wasn't going to settle down. Now today, I'm sitting in the car with the most amazing man I have ever met and am actually struggling with the decision of whether to keep him or not.

What is happening to me?

"We're here," Mason said as the car slowed to a stop and I could make out the familiar click of the shifter finding its way to rest in park.

I could imagine the smile on his face from the tone in his voice when he spoke.

"So, I can take this off now?" I reached for the blindfold over my eyes.

"No! Not yet!"

I listened to Mason's door open and close, then felt mine open next to me. He scooped me up and gently took me out of the car.

This man was seriously ripped. He lifted me effortlessly and made me feel as if I weighed as much as a feather. I tightened my arms around his neck and secretly prayed he wouldn't let me go, but unfortunately, he did. We only walked a short way before he set me on my feet. However, he still didn't remove the blindfold.

"Just wait right here a minute."

I heard him rooting around in his car behind me and movement in front of me, but I'm not sure about the specific sounds.

I tried to use all of my senses to predict where it was he had taken me. The smell of lilacs swirled around me, mixed with the cool breeze that was lightly blowing my hair. Birds tweeted off in the distance somewhere; their song was beautiful.

Mason came up behind me, caressing my shoulders and arms. "Are you ready?"

I laughed. "Is that a trick question? Hell yes, I'm ready!!"

He laughed with me.

"Close your eyes," he whispered in my ear, his lips brushing against my earlobe.

It gave me goosebumps and I shivered.

I closed my eyes, and he untied the blindfold, removing it gently from my face. I took a deep breath and held it in anticipation. I'm not even sure why.

"Ok, open them."

"Oh. My. God. Mason!"

A small, beautiful field stretched out around us. There were trees along the edge of it and lilac bushes off to one side. In front of me, was a little red and white checkered blanket with a wicker picnic basket, two wine flutes, a bottle of champagne, some strawberries and croissants. I was taken aback by the sight.

"Oh, Mason...this is so sweet!"

Mason's POV

She turned around, jumped up and threw her arms around my neck.

I was hoping for a good reaction and that was way better than I expected.

I gave her a big smile. "I'm glad you like it. I was hoping you would."

"No one has ever done something like this for me."

We sat down on the blanket and I opened the bottle of champagne. I aimed away from us, and it shot out of the bottle like a rocket, making us laugh.

"Mmm...I love how bubbly it is!" She giggled.

I dropped a couple of strawberries into the bottom of our glasses and held mine up. "To us."

A slight grin spread slowly upon her face as she raised her own glass, clinking it with mine. "To the next thirty days."

Hmmm...definitely going to take some convincing...

We sat for a while talking, eating and laughing before I decided to ask her the question that had been plaguing me all weekend. "So, Allison?"

"Hmmm?" She was lying on the blanket, staring up at the white fluffy clouds above us while I was propped up on my elbow next to her.

"What happened to you?"

She furrowed her brow in confusion. "What do you mean?"

I swallowed hard. "I...uh...I mean..."

Stop fumbling you idiot! God, I get around her and I can't manage sentences, which is ridiculous because I argue with people for a living.

"I was just meaning that you talked about how you can't commit, and you wanted to see other people during our month of dating. Generally, something has happened to someone for them to make those choices. So, I was just wondering what happened to you to make you decide to remain single?"

She wasn't looking at me. She was still looking up, but I'm not sure if it was the clouds she was focused on. Her expression was distant and emotionless.

We sat there for quite some time in awkward silence. Her face never changed. I couldn't stand it anymore. "Allison?"

She closed her eyes and breathed out like she had been holding it for a long time. "I just really don't wanna talk about me right now. Can we talk about you? Or like anything else..."

Well, that kind of answered my question. Something did happen.

"What do you wanna know about me?"

Allison sat up and looked at me, smiling. Her eyes were bright again. "What made you wanna be a lawyer?"

I laughed. "Well, my mom always used to say that I'd argue with a fence post if I thought I could make it move. So, I pretty much decided at a young age that it was my calling in life."

We both laughed.

"What about you? What is it that made you wanna do...What is it you do?"

Sh*t. I don't even know what she does for a living.

She laughed. "You don't have a clue what I do, do you?"

I chuckled nervously and shook my head. I felt like an asshole. I spent the whole weekend f*cking the girl and never took the time to really get to know her.

"No. I don't. I'm sorry," I confessed.

She laughed again. "I'm an architect."

I raised my eyebrows at her. "Wow...I never would have guessed that."

"Yeah, I just liked art in school, especially drawing buildings. I can make extravagant buildings and houses, but I can't draw hands on a person. I always got too frustrated with it," she laughed.

I laughed with her. "That's really cool. I was very bad at art. I can draw like...stick people and that's pretty much it."

Allison cracked up, and it made me laugh, too. Her laugh was contagious.

"I actually designed the apartment building I live in now."

"Really? That's cool!"

She smiled and stared at me for a moment. Then, she leaned in and kissed me. Her soft, plump lips roamed over mine furiously.

"Mmm…," she moaned when she pulled away and suddenly, she was standing.

"What are you doing?" I asked her.

Was she about to run away?
