The Meeting: Part 2
Otto returns to Emilia's side as Kurl, the Minister of Mines, stands up. His gaze is serious, and his voice firm; he is the person who knows the most about mines and metals in general.
"We established contact with the Ganacks mines after the war. The announcement of the cult sighting caused some fear, but the presence of officers is already stabilizing everything. W-We expect normal activities to resume within a day. A~lso, we've discovered a new mercury deposit, which is essential for extracting gold and silver. Since it's a high-risk material, we can offer a factory for the kingdom to make use of it."
He takes a sip of water, clearing his throat to continue.
"We've also spotted new mines in the Irlam mountains. Initial surveys indicate the presence of high-quality iron and copper, as well as traces of tin, which is essential for producing bronze. The construction of new mines is still awaiting approval," Kurl says, showing a detailed map of the mines and the new discoveries.
Kurl continues, aware of the importance of his next point.
"Additionally, it's important to invest more in the infrastructure of the mines. Although we've managed to reduce casualties in mining, it remains a risky activity due to incidents with the Lagmite. I propose implementing the third version of the steam engine to improve efficiency and safety in the mines. We could also make greater use of earth Lagmite crystals, which stabilize the environment and prevent collapses."
The room falls silent, considering the proposal. Kurl points to a chart showing the reduction in casualties since the previous safety measures were implemented.
"These crystals, combined with advanced machinery, can create a much safer work environment. The steam engine can facilitate ventilation and material transport, while the earth and wind Lagmite crystals can strengthen tunnel walls and reduce the risk of accidents. Additionally, we could include a collapse-proof structural system using steel as reinforcement in the mines, creating bunkers in case of an accident."
A minister raises his hand, intrigued.
"What impact would this investment have on our current resources?"
Kurl nods, ready for the question.
"Initially, there will be a significant cost, but the long-term benefits will be tremendous." His gaze is stern, prepared to debate. "Not only will it increase production and efficiency, but it will also reduce human losses and improve working conditions. This, in turn, will attract more workers and boost morale in the mines, which is already not a highly sought-after job."
I nod, understanding the importance of these improvements. The safety of our miners is paramount, and technological and magical enhancements can make a significant difference.
"I support your proposal, Kurl. We'll discuss the financial and technical details further to implement these improvements as soon as possible," Emilia says, watching as the other ministers' nod in agreement with her words.
The well-being of our people will always be a priority, and I'm glad Emilia was the first to voice her support.
Rost, the Minister of the Environment, stands up with a grave and determined expression. Everyone in the room turns their attention to him, aware of the urgency of the issue he's about to address.
"As we all know, we're facing a significant challenge with waste management in our city. After the recent war, the accumulation of waste has reached alarming levels." His gaze is tired, with dark circles under his eyes and a slightly hoarse voice. "Given these problems, traditional landfills are no longer a viable option, especially with the population growth we're experiencing. Additionally... Additionally, we're facing a high loss of organic material, which could be efficiently utilized for compost production," Rost begins, displaying graphs and statistical data on a large sheet.
I study the numbers carefully. The figures are clear: a large amount of organic waste is being discarded, wasting a valuable resource that could be turned into natural fertilizers.
"With the transition to using steel instead of iron, we're seeing an increasing amount of iron waste in our foundries. This iron, although discarded in its current form, could be recycled, and reintegrated into the production chain, thereby reducing our dependence on new raw materials, and minimizing the environmental impact of our metallurgical industry," Rost continues, pointing out specific areas for improvement in the foundries and recycling plants.
I nod in understanding.
It's crucial to optimize our recycling and reuse processes to maximize efficiency and minimize waste. The implementation of advanced technologies and investment in appropriate infrastructure are necessary steps to effectively tackle this challenge.
It all makes sense, and I'm proud of his conclusion.
"I propose that we work closely with the industrial sector to develop state-of-the-art waste processing facilities. This would include implementing advanced separation techniques and introducing emerging technologies like the new steam engine, as well as improving processes to generate propane gas," Rost proposes, sparking interest and discussion among those present.
The room murmurs in response to Rost's innovative ideas. Waste management isn't just an environmental issue; it's also an opportunity to boost our economy and improve the quality of life for the people of Irlam.
"Finally, we need a comprehensive approach that covers everything from efficient collection to making the most of our waste. I'm confident that with everyone's collaboration, we can turn this challenge into an opportunity for the sustainable advancement of our city," Rost concludes, receiving applause and expressions of support.
Emilia stands up, surprising everyone. She walks over to Rost, catching him off guard as she takes his cheeks in her hands.
"M-Miss?" Rost asks, concerned. "Did I say something...?"
At that moment, Emilia's hands glow a light blue. The dark circles under his eyes disappear, and everyone smiles as they see him being healed. When she finishes, she gives him a smile and then looks at everyone.
"I understand the situation. I know you're all making a biiig effort to move the city forward." She places her hands on her chest, smiling softly. "That makes me veeery happy, but your lives are important too. Without you, Irlam can't stand, so your duty is to both Irlam and you."
I smile, watching the future ruler we will have.
"Your lives are important too; your work will be much better if you're healthy and well-rested." Emilia returns to her seat, looking seriously at everyone. "Is that clear?"
Everyone nods seriously, and with that, we continue.
Jahir, the Minister of Agriculture, stands up. His expertise in the agricultural and livestock sector is widely recognized throughout the kingdom. Despite his difficulty with mathematical issues and sophisticated words, Jahir possesses deep, practical knowledge that has guided the agricultural development of our city.
"Fellow ministers, Irlam's growth presents a major problem in the field," Jahir begins, spreading some simple but effective statistical plans on the table.
His wrinkled hands point to key areas on the maps, highlighting the critical expansion points.
"We can't keep up with our current production. That's why we've requested the use of new hectares for farming and raising livestock. With the increase in demand, it's crucial that we secure our food self-sufficiency without relying entirely on external imports," Jahir explains, his voice calm but firm.
His understanding of crop cycles, the ideal seasons for planting, and traditional fertilization techniques is evident in every word he speaks. While his approach may lack the precise data and technical language of other ministers, his wisdom in agricultural practices is invaluable to us.
"With winter approaching, we'll face additional challenges in managing agriculture and livestock. The low temperatures and adverse weather conditions will impact our crops and the health of our livestock," Jahir begins, adjusting his glasses while reviewing some reports.
His statistical charts, though simple, clearly show the vulnerable areas during the winter season. I suspect his son helped him with this, as he's the one really working on the statistical side.
"It's crucial to properly prepare to maintain production through the winter..." He coughs slightly, then clears his throat. "Excuse me. I'm proposing increasing investment in greenhouses and heating systems to protect our cold-sensitive crops. Additionally, we must strengthen the forage warehouses and ensure enough food supply for the livestock during the harshest months."
"We should also consider diversifying crops that are more resistant to the cold and implementing soil conservation techniques to protect our farmlands from winter erosion," Jahir adds, highlighting the need to adapt and strengthen our agricultural practices in the face of changing climate challenges. "I have a method I'd like to propose, passed down through generations, and it's quite effective, but I'm not sure if you'd be interested in using it."
His words resonate with wisdom and pragmatism. While his methods may be traditional, in this moment, experience carries significant weight.
"With these measures, we can ensure our rural communities remain stable and thrive during the winter. We need to act to protect both the livestock and the townspeople," Jahir concludes, receiving nods of approval and support from the other ministers.
Pearl, the labor minister, stands up, a woman with a sharp gaze and a calm but firm tone. Everyone in the room turns their attention to her, aware of the importance of her input in Irlam's emerging economy.
"Jobs are in increasingly high demand. Not just in factories, but also in administrative roles and in the new businesses that are emerging, like restaurants and local shops," Pearl begins, her voice resonating with experience and wisdom.
I observe how everyone nods, understanding the changing dynamics of the job market in our developing city.
"With the onset of industries and small businesses, we are seeing the creation of new job opportunities. This creation fosters the demand for labor, making it easier for people to find work. In the future, we foresee the need for specialization and training to fill roles both in government and business management," Pearl explains, slightly tilting her hand to show a chart that illustrates, although factory jobs are the most sought after, the others aren't far behind. "There are tasks that require specialized knowledge, so it would be essential to offer aid to train interested personnel."
Her words are met with interest and anticipation, aware that Irlam's economic growth heavily depends on attracting and retaining talent.
"To attract more residents to Irlam, we will need to offer more housing. After the trial, we expect many people to seek new opportunities here. We can establish contacts with companies outside our kingdom and offer incentives for them to move to Irlam, providing attractive benefits," Pearl proposes, anticipating a proactive strategy to draw population.
"I think that's a good idea."
"So do I."
Her ideas receive positive responses, indicating that the proposal could be key to mitigating unemployment and strengthening Irlam's labor community.
"Over time, these benefits will gradually decrease, and those who move will become fully integrated citizens of our community. I am confident that this measure will not only reduce unemployment but also strengthen the local economy in the long term," Pearl concludes, receiving nods of approval and recognition for her approach.
If I want this society to improve as I need it to, education is key. Therefore, creating specialized careers is necessary. Hiring wise people in all fields of this world, including alchemy, while they also learn about my world. Integrating both, we will reach a higher level, perhaps in hundreds of years.
'Even if I'm not around to see it.'
Frederica stands up with a radiant smile, reflecting her commitment to education and the development of Irlam. She was the first to visit Garfield, and her determination is evident now.
'Though so is her sadness.'
"It's clear that we need to expand our educational facilities. The classrooms and number of students are reaching critical limits, so I propose the construction of a larger, specialized school," Frederica says firmly.
As I listen to her words, I take the initiative.
"I agree with your proposal. In fact, I've already planned a strategy. The primary schools will be located in Irlam as already assigned by Minister Frederica, while a secondary school with specialized technical classes will be built to prepare students for the industry," I state, pointing toward the mansion through the window, catching everyone's attention. "The place where this school will be built is none other than the former marquis's mansion."
I observe surprise on their faces, but also excitement.
Emilia and I share a smile, knowing this was a step we had wanted to take for some time. Although we never considered leaving because of everything we had, but this moment, it's an excellent idea.
The situation is critical for us, but that doesn't mean we should leave opportunities aside. We must keep moving forward, as time waits for no one.
The mansion might have the lost library, but I'm sure there won't be a problem; I just need to destroy all the doors so that the only door that needs to be opened is in my office. That way, when my princess returns, we can change the space to our home.
Then, Emilia speaks up.
"Education is the foundation of our city. Without it, we couldn't sustain our industries or ensure sustained growth. The marquis's mansion will become the Dragon School of Lugunica, a name that reflects our commitment to accessible, high-quality education for the entire kingdom," Emilia adds, emphasizing the importance of this new educational center.
'So, she did remember.'
Applause erupts in the room, marking the beginning of a new chapter for Irlam.
As we move forward, it will be crucial to consider expanding education closer to neighborhoods and implementing competitions between schools to improve student performance, always keeping a focus on the students' mental health.
Frederica sits with an eager smile, fully aware of the challenges and opportunities that this educational project represents for our emerging city.
Pest, the Minister of Security, stands up and hands over several letters. I can see that assaults have slightly increased. Although no murders have been reported on the streets yet, it's believed that an outlaw group is gaining strength.
"Their appearance coincides with the rise in assaults, so a request has been made to create an investigative unit to collaborate with the police."
I smile, recalling an old TV series.
"Establish a unit under your command. Collaborate with Pearl and Helena to develop a publicity strategy that will attract more recruits. Some will be designated as police officers, while others will serve as detectives. Initially, they'll operate in close collaboration with the existing force, which we will declare as police officers, pending the formation of a new public force that will emerge soon," I order Pest, who bows and takes a seat.
A team of detectives will be responsible for uncovering crimes, ensuring that no one can get away with committing a crime.
I'm becoming increasingly proud of Irlam.
Announcement.
Hello everyone, first I apologize for the delay and for bringing such a short chapter.
I've started my academic internship, working from 7 AM to 6 PM Monday through Saturday, so I really don't have much time to write and translate. I'm trying to organize myself to manage everything simultaneously, so that while I'm writing, I'm also translating.
I understand if what you were interested in was faster publication, but I don't think that will be possible until I get used to it. It's hard work in a hospital, so it doesn't leave me much room for anything else.
I'll do my best to bring you two chapters a week. Thank you all so much for your support
