Chapter 1 - Chapter 1: Fake Life

"And so, King Lyrien of Astravelia succumbed to death by an unknown evil…"

The professor dragged on. I click a few keys on the laptop in front of me as a pink avatar jumps across obstacles to avoid falling into the lava. The speed increases and I fail to keep up, my avatar inevitably falling to her death.

YOU DIED. Try again?

I sigh quietly and go back to the home screen where I'm met with a galaxy of stars as my desktop background. If this college offered Astrology, I would have actually paid attention in class.

But my parents didn't believe in education and refused to put money towards my tuition. So I was stuck here, studying History and Economics on the only scholarship I was successful for.

"You suck at gaming." A voice whispers from behind me.

I don't even use the energy to turn around. I simply flip the perpetrator off and jot down some notes. Might as well do some work.

"Real clever, loser." He taunts.

I try to focus on what the professor is saying but something tickles the back of my head. I smack it away and finally turn to glare at the culprit.

If he wasn't such a smartass, I would have called him handsome. His raven hair is tousled casually and his narrow, hazel eyes always come across as flirtatious. Other than the scar on his left cheek, the rest of his skin is porcelain to perfection and paired with full lips rested in a smirk.

Ryker Blackwood. My enemy.

Ever since I accidentally knocked into him riding on a skateboard on the first day of class in our first year, he has been hell-bent on teasing me at every chance he gets. We were both now second year students and I was still unable to get away from him.

He leans forward on his bench. Since he's sitting one row up on the elevated amphitheater, Ryker looks down on me. Literally and metaphorically.

"Finally." He says and it irks me so much. He always wants a reaction out of me.

"Stop being a lost kitten and find another toy to play with." I hissed.

His chest grumbles with a laugh. If I was in my first year, I would have blushed. But I know Ryker well enough to know there's no sentiment behind his playboy act.

"You wanna be my toy, huh?"

Okay, I lied. I'm still blushing. I whip back around angrily and my face heats up more and more after every second.

Ugh, I hate him!

"Please read chapter thirty-three and answer the reflection questions by Thursday." The professor calls out and we all shove our belongings into our bag, desperate to leave the classroom.

I try to outrun Ryker, though he catches up to me and blocks the end of my row.

"Where are you going?" He baits me.

"Get out of my way, weirdo." Ryker ignores me and starts to step closer, giving me no room for an exit as I back further inwards. The class has pretty much all filtered out, leaving us two alone.

"I've got another class to be at, Ryker." I clench my laptop against my chest harder.

"So do I." He says simply.

"Just leave me alone!" I screech out of embarrassment and Ryker's emerald gaze watches me stunned. I use that momentary distraction to shove my way past him, my hands making contact with his hard chest.

"What did I ever even do to you?" I mumble and when I almost reach the door, Ryker's voice booms deeply.

"You have no idea." He snarls at me and from this distance and the expression on his face, I can deduce that he wants to ravish me. In a very, very bad way. I quickly scamper out with confusion warping through my mind.

Seriously, what did I ever do to him!?
