Chapter 1 - The Walking Corpse

I was nothing.

A hollow shell drifting through life, blending into the crowd like just another faceless ghost. No dreams, no passion—just an empty vessel, existing without meaning. At fourteen, I had already accepted that I was destined to be ordinary, a spectator in a world that moved without me.

Until that day.

The afternoon sun spilled golden streaks through the half-drawn curtains of our living room. The air was thick with the lazy hum of the ceiling fan, the faint aroma of leftover lunch still lingering. I was in my usual state—mindlessly pacing, cracking jokes, filling the silence with mockery. Anything to drown out the emptiness. My brother, sprawled on the couch, let out a sigh.

"Hey, just sit down and watch this with me."

I barely glanced at the screen. An anime played—some over-the-top football story with dramatic moves that defied physics. I scoffed. "Seriously? This looks ridiculous." But even as I spoke, something tugged at me. My fingers twitched. My feet hesitated. And before I knew it, I was sinking onto the couch beside him, arms crossed, prepared to tear it apart with sarcastic remarks.

Then—it happened.

The players moved with impossible grace, their feet weaving magic across the field. The ball streaked through the air like a comet, bending reality with its sheer force. The passion in their eyes, the unwavering belief in their own strength—it struck something deep inside me. My chest tightened. My throat closed.

I blinked, and warm droplets hit my hands.

Tears.

Why was I crying?

Something stirred within me, something I couldn't name. A fire, slow but relentless, spread through my veins. The numbness I had lived with for so long began to crack and crumble. My heart pounded, syncing with the rhythm of the game unfolding before me. For the first time, I felt alive.

And in that moment—

I became Awakened.

The world sharpened. Colors deepened. Sounds rang clearer. It wasn't just about the anime—it was what it represented. A world beyond the dull, gray existence I had known. A world where passion could move mountains, where belief could rewrite fate itself.

I sat there long after the episode ended, my mind racing. Was this what I had been missing? Was this what it felt like to care about something? I clenched my fists, my whole body trembling. The realization was both exhilarating and terrifying.

Because now, there was no turning back.

I had seen a glimpse of something greater, something worth chasing. The feeling was intoxicating, addicting. I suddenly wanted to run, to move, to do something. I couldn't stay still anymore. My body buzzed with restless energy, as if the fire inside me was demanding action.

I turned to my brother, words forming before I could think. "Hey… do you think I could do something like that?"

He looked at me, raising an eyebrow. "Like what?"

I swallowed. "Something… amazing."

He smirked. "I dunno. Guess you'll have to find out."

And I—I was going to chase it.

No matter what.
