Chapter 1 - Chapter 1

The senior hunters had not seen any traces of wolves in this area of the woods, so the women in charge ordered a senior hunter to take me and my brother to learn to shoot arrows with live moving targets. My little brother was very good with a bow for his age, but my skill was lacking, I always had shaky hands no matter what I was doing my hands were always moving slightly. Having naturally shaky hands didn't normally affect my life too much, only for things that required precision like trying to shoot a small moving target. The slightest mistake could mean that we have less food in the village for my people to eat. Our village was small and very far from any city or town, so we had only the resources given to us by the forest to survive most of the time. I found myself lost in thought mindlessly following Torin the senior hunter and my brother Raven. When suddenly my brother stopped and almostI bumped into him. "Why did you stop?" I asked him. "Shh" He replied, and pointed in front of him. I traced his hand and saw what he was looking at, an old wolf sleeping against a tall tree. I looked at Torin, trying to see his face to understand what he was thinking. He held out his arm to the side in front of Raven and I. He turned his head and whispered "we should go back, we won't find suitable targets here." I nodded my head understanding that we might return empty handed for the afternoon. "But he's sleeping, surely we can kill him, he's not moving and we can't just go back empty handed." Raven whispered back. "We shouldn't risk it. It's getting darker and there shouldn't be wolves this close to the village." he replied firmly. Raven hesitated for a moment before glancing at me, then turning his head back to the wolf and pulling out his bow and knocking an arrow and pulling the string back and firing it toward the wolf before either Torin or I could stop him. All our eyes watched as the arrow flew through the air and struck the sleeping wolf in its paw. It jolted up and looked right at the three of us. Torin immediately fired another arrow at the now awake and angry wolf. The wolf reacted faster than the arrow flying through the air even though it was injured. It ducked and the arrow just missed flying over the wolf. Now even angrier that we had tried to kill it twice it jumped forward toward Raven but Torin pushed him out of the way and instead of biting my little brother it had bitten Torin in his neck. Torins arms flailed as we tried to push the wolf off of himself but the wolf shook its head and bit harder on his neck. "RUN!" I yelled at Raven. He snapped out of his daze and immediately began sprinting as fast as he could back the way we came. Seeing Torin, who was both my teacher and someone I viewed as an older brother Bleeding out in front of me. I Began to run as well, but my body wasn't doing what I told it to. I wanted to run away, to save myself and my younger brother. I was running toward the bloody scene in front of me. The wolf seemed too focused on Torin to care that I was running toward them. I pulled out the knife in my boot and lunged at them. The wolf jerked back, still holding Torin in its jaw, not being able to stop the forward momentum. I collided with Torin and the knife lost most of its power and only scratched the wolf. I jumped over Torin and tried to kill it again. This time the wolf was slower and I was able to slash its eye, partially blinding it. It recoiled in pain and I again slashed at it. The wolf was just out of reach, and lunged at me and bit my arm. I dropped the knife in my hand and yelled in pain as the wolf bit down harder. It yanked me toward it and started to drag me. With my free arm it reached for the knife but couldn't reach it. I began to punch the wolf in the jaw in an effort to get it to release me. My strength left me and my vision slowly faded, I couldn't raise my arm again to swing. I looked back and saw Torin, lifeless and nearly decapitated. I knew there was no way he could still be alive. I couldn't feel my arm anymore but could tell it was still attached as I could see Torins body Get further away. My vision completely faded and I passed out.
