Chapter 17 - The Brightest Lights Always Leave The darkest Shadows

Thirty agonizing seconds stretched into an eternity for Superman, suspended in the crushing grief at the edge of the solar corona. The image of Jake's small form disappearing into the incandescent fury was seared into his mind, a wound that felt deeper and more irreparable than any physical injury. The silence in his comms was deafening, amplifying the hollowness in his heart.

Then, the Sun roared.

Not the steady, omnipresent hum of stellar fusion, but a violent, explosive eruption. A colossal solar flare, magnitudes greater than any Carrington Event in human history, erupted from the Sun's surface. A blinding tendril of superheated plasma, crackling with unimaginable energy, shot outwards into the void, briefly painting the black canvas of space in hues of impossible white and searing gold. The sheer intensity of the light washed over Superman, forcing him to shield his eyes even through his invulnerability.

As the flare subsided, leaving behind a shimmering afterimage, something else became visible, slowly being ejected from the Sun's turbulent embrace. A figure, small and seemingly lifeless, tumbled outwards, propelled by the sheer force of the solar eruption. A faint, golden corona still clung to it, dissipating like morning mist.

Hope, fragile yet fierce, ignited in Superman's chest. It couldn't be… could it?

He propelled himself forward with renewed urgency, his super speed tearing through the lingering heat. As he drew closer, his heart leaped. It was Jake.

His son floated in the vacuum, seemingly unharmed, the faint golden aura now completely gone. But he was unconscious, his body limp and still. Superman gently gathered Jake into his arms, his relief warring with a fresh wave of fear. He was alive, but in what condition?

With a speed born of desperation, Superman retreated from the Sun's vicinity, carrying Jake's inert form. He needed to get him back to Earth, to the safety of the Fortress of Solitude where he could be properly examined.

Back in his Metropolis bunker, John Henry Irons watched his monitors with a mixture of horror and disbelief as Jake's energy signature vanished within the Sun. He had already begun to process the catastrophic implications, the crushing blow to Superman's spirit, when his sensors registered an unprecedented energy surge emanating from the star.

Then, a new signature appeared, being violently ejected from the solar flare. It was Jake's, but… different. His energy readings were off the charts, spiking to levels Irons had never conceived possible.

"He's… alive?" Irons breathed, his voice filled with stunned disbelief. He immediately contacted Superman, his message urgent. "Superman, do you read me? My sensors are picking up Jake! He's been ejected from the Sun! His energy levels are… extraordinary!"

Superman, already halfway back to Earth, responded, his voice strained but filled with a glimmer of hope. "I have him, John Henry. He's unconscious. I'm taking him to the Fortress."

Hours later, within the crystalline sanctuary of the Fortress of Solitude, Superman gently placed Jake's comatose form on a specialized bio-bed. Lois hovered nearby, her face pale with worry, her hand resting lightly on Jake's. John Henry Irons, having arrived via a discreet transport provided by General Lane, stood beside Clark, his advanced scanners whirring softly as they analyzed Jake's condition.

The data pouring into Irons's console was staggering. Every biological and physiological parameter was elevated to an almost unbelievable degree. His cellular structure was denser, his musculature far more developed than it had been just hours before. His energy reserves were immense, radiating a latent power that hummed through the Fortress's sensitive instruments.

Clark, using his own Kryptonian physiology as a baseline, ran his own internal scans, his brow furrowed in astonishment. "It's… it's as if he was bathed in pure Kryptonian sunlight for centuries," he murmured, his voice filled with awe and a touch of apprehension.

After a thorough analysis, Clark turned to Irons and Lois, his expression a complex mixture of relief and profound realization. "The Sun… it didn't kill him. It… amplified him. To an incredible degree."

"How incredible, Clark?" Lois asked, her voice barely a whisper.

Clark took a deep breath, trying to process the sheer magnitude of what he had discovered. "Based on his previous levels… and comparing them to his current state… the raw solar energy has given Jake a near eight hundred and fifty percent boost to all of his base abilities."

A stunned silence filled the crystalline chamber. Eight hundred and fifty percent. The number hung in the air, heavy with implication.

John Henry Irons's eyes widened behind his glasses. "That's… beyond anything we could have predicted. His strength, his speed, his energy projection… they've all been multiplied exponentially."

"And his connection to the Earth?" Lois asked, her gaze fixed on Jake's still form.

Clark nodded slowly. "That too seems to have been… enhanced. There's a deeper resonance now, a more profound link to the planet's core energies."

A chilling realization dawned in Irons's mind. "There may be no limit to his potential, Superman. If he can absorb and process solar energy at this rate…"

Clark's gaze met Irons's, a shared understanding passing between them. The Sun, the source of their power, had nearly claimed Jake's life but had instead transformed him into something far greater than they had ever imagined. The implications for the future, for the battles to come, were staggering.

In the obsidian void, the initial satisfaction of Lyra's report curdled into incredulous fury. The subtle thrum of the conclave intensified, now a discordant vibration that spoke of their collective outrage.

"Impossible!" the basaltine figure roared, its shadowy form fracturing with the force of its disbelief. "He was consumed! The Sun's core… no being can survive that!"

"Yet, the reports are undeniable," the crystalline voice hissed, its facets flickering erratically. "Our probes detect a massive energy signature, far exceeding his previous levels, emanating from the vicinity of their star. He… he endured."

Lyra's fluid form rippled nervously under the weight of their collective anger. "I followed the instructions precisely. The hypnotic suggestion was absolute. He flew directly into the heart of the Sun."

"And he returned… stronger!" the serpentine voice spat, its smooth tone now laced with venom. "Your 'expedient solution' has backfired spectacularly! We have inadvertently amplified the very obstacle we sought to eliminate!"

"How?" the crystalline voice demanded, its tone sharp with disbelief. "How could a being withstand such unimaginable energy?"

Silence descended upon the conclave, a heavy, oppressive stillness broken only by the agitated shifting of their shadowy forms. The implications of this unforeseen development were dire. The human-Kryptonian hybrid, already a significant threat, had now been imbued with power on a scale they had not anticipated.

"His connection to the planet… it must have played a role," the serpentine voice mused, its tone grudging. "A resilience we did not fully comprehend. The Earth's energies… they somehow shielded him, allowed him to absorb the Sun's power without being destroyed."

"This changes everything!" the basaltine figure bellowed. "Our plans… our timelines… they are now jeopardized by this… this anomaly!"

"Indeed," the crystalline voice agreed grimly. "Our window of opportunity is rapidly closing. His increased power will make any future attempts at manipulation or direct confrontation exponentially more dangerous."

A heated debate erupted within the obsidian void, the resonant whispers clashing with increasing intensity. Accusations were hurled, strategies were questioned, and the carefully constructed framework of their plans began to crumble under the weight of this unforeseen catastrophe.

"We should have acted decisively from the beginning!" the basaltine figure roared. "Direct force! Annihilation!"

"And risked revealing ourselves prematurely?" the serpentine voice countered, its tone sharp. "Your impulsiveness would have doomed us all!"

"What do we do now?" another of the ten newly introduced figures finally spoke, its voice a low, resonant hum that seemed to vibrate through the shadows. "Our agent has failed. Our target has become… exponentially more powerful."

Lyra's fluid form shrunk slightly under the weight of their collective scrutiny. "I can still… observe him. Understand the extent of his new abilities…"

"Observe?" the crystalline voice scoffed. "Observation is no longer sufficient! We need a solution! A way to neutralize this threat before it becomes insurmountable!"

The debate raged on, the Obsidian Conclave's carefully cultivated confidence shattered by the unexpected resilience and amplification of Jake Kent. The whispers in the shadows now carried a note of desperation, their plans thrown into chaos by the unintended consequences of their attempted assassination. They had sought to extinguish a spark, and instead, they had inadvertently ignited a supernova. The greatest obstacle to their dominion had just become immeasurably greater, and the shadows of doubt that now clung to the Obsidian Conclave were darker and more menacing than ever before.
