Chapter 36 – Birthday Code and Beach House Confessions
Two weeks passed like a blink.
Jake Harper turned twelve on a warm Friday morning, but truthfully, he hadn't felt like a kid in a long time. Not since the day he opened his eyes and realized he wasn't Jake Harper anymore—but someone with the mind of a grown man, the IQ of a supercomputer, and a second chance at everything.
He hadn't told anyone the truth—not Judith, not Alan, not Charlie. And definitely not Haley.
But today? Today was about all the things he had done in the last two weeks.

Caltech: Life Among the Geniuses
Being a twelve-year-old at Caltech had its challenges.
Some professors still looked confused when he walked into class, only to have their confusion replaced with wide-eyed amazement ten minutes into a discussion.
Jake's current course load was enough to humble most graduate students:
Advanced Algorithms – where the professor openly admitted Jake's solutions were "mathematically elegant in a way most adults couldn't achieve."
Behavioral Economics – which fascinated Jake to no end. He could predict not just how people wanted things, but how they didn't even know they wanted them yet.
Emerging Tech Markets – where Jake bit his tongue while listening to MBA students brainstorm ideas he had already built.
Lunches were usually spent alone, eating quickly in a quiet campus corner while checking FaceWorld updates. The social side of college life wasn't built for twelve-year-olds. And honestly, Jake didn't care.
He wasn't here for parties.
He was here to win.
Still, one professor—Dr. Levin—had pulled him aside after class earlier in the week.
"You don't talk much," the professor said, "but when you do, people listen."
Jake shrugged. "Talking doesn't scale. Code does."
The professor smiled like he wasn't sure if it was a joke. It wasn't.

FaceWorld: The World's Next Big Thing
In two weeks, FaceWorld had grown from a brilliant idea to a near-unstoppable wave.
Jake had just passed 8.5 million users. College students. High schoolers. Even a few forward-thinking companies had stumbled onto the platform through internal invites and posted classified listings to test the Marketplace feature.
Which, by the way, was crushing it.
Users were selling everything from textbooks to Walkmans to Polaroid cameras. Someone even listed an original Nintendo Power Glove, and a bidding war broke out in the comments.
Jake's revenue dashboard had moved beyond projections. He had real advertising offers now—smaller brands for now, sure, but interested. Curious. And he'd started saying "no" more often than "yes."
He wasn't just building a product.
He was building a future.
And still, the only notification he really waited for was when Haley texted.
---
Haley: The Highlight of Every Day
They texted every day. Multiple times a day.
[Haley:] Happy birthday, genius boy.
[Jake:] I'm officially twelve. Feeling wiser. Definitely taller.
[Haley:] I'd say more annoying.
[Jake:] Same thing.
[Haley:] Is your party still happening?
[Jake:] Charlie's house. 3PM. Come. Bring snacks.
[Haley:] Do I get a tour of the mansion? Or is that reserved for adult women with no boundaries like your grandma?
[Jake:] You get the deluxe tour. No grandma jokes required.
Jake had never felt so at ease with someone his own age—or close to it. Haley was sharp, funny, effortlessly cool, and completely unaware of how important she had become to him.
Today was his birthday.
And she was coming.

The Party Begins – Malibu Beach House
The Harper house in Brentwood was quiet that morning, but Malibu was already buzzing by noon.
Berta had arrived early to take over the kitchen and yard, barking orders like a general.
Judith was in a mild panic trying to balance decorations with dignity. "It's a twelve-year-old's party, not a red carpet premiere," she muttered to herself while adjusting balloon arrangements—then promptly moved them again.
Alan, of course, brought chaos.
He arrived mid-morning with a proud grin and a woman in tow—Kandi.
Kandi was… enthusiastic. And wearing something pink and sparkly that was clearly not purchased in the kids' section of any department store.
"Isn't she wonderful?" Alan whispered to Charlie when no one was listening.
"She's something," Charlie replied. "And I think it might be contagious."

FaceWorld Check-In
Jake set up on the desktop in the living room and opened the admin console. His birthday party hadn't even started and he'd already passed 10,000 new sign-ups that day alone.
A thread in the feedback forum read:
"Anyone else feel like this site just gets it?"
Another:
"How is this still free?"
Jake smiled to himself. The server load was stable, the growth curve was climbing, and everything was holding.
He logged off, wiped his hands on his jeans, and walked out to the patio.
Time to be twelve for a few hours.
---
Guests Arrive
By 3PM, people had started pouring in—Caltech students, neighbors, a couple of Charlie's poker buddies, and friends of friends who had heard "the genius kid is having a party in Malibu."
Then came the moment.
"Hey, birthday boy."
Jake turned.
Haley was at the door, wearing jeans and a pink tank top, sunglasses pushed into her hair, and holding a gift bag.
Claire stood behind her, arms crossed, evaluating everything and everyone.
"Hi," Jake said, suddenly forgetting what words were.
"This is from my mom," Haley said, handing him the bag. "The real gift's from me."
Claire scanned the space. "Your uncle lives here?"
"Yes," Jake replied. "It's... complicated."
Judith walked over and gave Claire a knowing smile.
"I can see why my daughter's been talking about him nonstop," Claire muttered under her breath.
---
Moments of Mayhem
Charlie tried to flirt with Claire and failed spectacularly.
Alan tried to brag about how FaceWorld was his idea, only for Berta to laugh so hard she snorted and nearly dropped a tray of ribs.
Judith stayed mostly quiet, watching her son with quiet awe.
There was something different about him lately. More focused. More mature.
And maybe, just maybe... she was starting to believe that he hadn't been pretending anymore.
---
Jake and Haley Slip Away
"Wanna escape for a minute?" Haley asked, nudging Jake with her elbow.
"I thought you'd never ask."
He led her down the hallway toward his bedroom. It was simple, modern—neat bed, tidy desk, textbooks stacked next to a screen displaying backend code, a whiteboard filled with flowcharts and data points.
"Wow," Haley said. "I expected, like... toys or something."
Jake chuckled. "I've upgraded."
She sat on the bed. "You've got 8.5 million users. You're building an empire. And you still blush when I smile at you."
"I'm evolving," he said, trying to act cool and failing completely.
She tilted her head. "You're cute."
He opened his mouth to respond, but she was already leaning in.
The kiss was soft. Real. And a little clumsy.
But it was perfect.
When she pulled away, she grinned. "Happy birthday."
He was still staring at her.
"Best one ever," he murmured.
---
Claire Connects the Dots
Back on the balcony, Claire and Judith watched the sun start to dip behind the Pacific.
One of the party banners read: "Happy Birthday Jake – FaceWorld Founder"
Claire squinted. "Okay… why does that say FaceWorld? And why do people keep calling him a genius?"
Judith smiled like she'd been waiting for that question.
"Because he is one. He built that site. He skipped grades. He's already at Caltech."
Claire blinked. "What?"
Judith just sipped her wine.
Claire looked out over the party again and said softly, "Wow."
---
Evening Calm
Guests trickled out. Berta packed leftovers. Charlie fell asleep upright on the lounge chair. Alan danced to the radio until Kandi made him sit down.
Claire called for Haley.
She reappeared from down the hall, cheeks flushed, smiling like she was trying not to.
Jake walked her to the door.
"I'm glad you came," he said.
"Me too."
She looked around to make sure no one was watching, then leaned in and whispered, "Call me tonight."
He grinned. "I will."
She kissed him on the cheek and left with her mom.
Jake stood in the doorway, watching her go, heart hammering in his chest.
This wasn't just a birthday.
It was the beginning of something incredible.
