Chapter 1 - The Final Walk

A man was walking on an endless road in an infinite abyss. Calling him a man might be a bit of a stretch, after all, all his living tissue had already decayed from his bones until he was nothing more than a walking skeleton clad in a black robe. Making him look more like a walking corpse than a man.

Of course, this powerful being could easily heal his body to its original form. Still, after an eternity of living, he didn't want to bother himself with healing and regenerating his body. And perhaps somewhere along this road, he had forgotten what he once looked like. So this is what became of him, nothing but a walking corpse wearing a black robe.

'How many times have I walked this road again?'

'I must have forgotten; after all, I have guided people on this path for over a trillion years, or so I think; it could have been more, but after a million years, you tend to lose count.'

'Now that all life has ceased to exist, this realm has no longer use of me, no more souls I must guide to their final resting place. After all these lonely and hollow years of guiding people on this road, my job is finally done. And it's finally my turn to walk this desolate path.'

'I wonder where my final resting place will be, even though I have guided countless souls on this path before I still don't know where this path leads to. Perhaps it leads to oblivion. Perhaps it leads to nothing at all, and all those I have guided disappeared from existence.'

'I can remember lost souls questioning me about where this road leads; sadly, I have never been able to answer their questions. Most believe this road leads them to the loved ones they lost in their lives.'

'Loved ones, huh?'

'Did I ever have those in my life?'

'My life'

'What was my life again?'

The man walked for what seemed an eternity, trying to remember the life he once lived.

'Most people just refer to me as death or the reaper or whatever word they come up with meaning death; it is all just the same.'

'But I can remember having a different name, a birth name. What was that name of mine again? I can remember it having something to do with stars.'

'More specifically, the star of my birth planet. What was that planet called again?'

"Hmmmm."

Looking at the ground, the man suddenly had a revelation.

"Earth"

'Yes, that was what it was called, and the star of that planet was called the Sun.'

"Sunny"

'Yes, that was my name. How could I have ever forgotten my own name?

'Yes, that's who I am. Sunless from planet Earth.'

'But there was more to my life, wasn't there?'

The man kept walking while trying to remember all his lost memories and putting them together to make sense of them.

After walking for what seemed to be an eternity, he finally remembered having a loved one.

'A sister, I think I had a sister, but what was her name again?'

'Curse this terrible memory of mine. I can remember her name correlating with mine. Hmm, what correlates with sunless?'

After contemplating it for a while, the man remembered.

'Rain, yes, that was her name.'

The man felt an emotion he hadn't felt for a long time, happiness.

'So even I had loved ones, huh? I hope she will be waiting for me at the end of this road. Not that I will be able to recognize her. I wonder what she looked like; she must look like me, right? After all, she is my sister.

The man suddenly stopped in his tracks.

'How do I look like again? After countless years of walking this lonely road, have I forgotten my reflection?'

The man looked at himself using shadow sense, but all he saw was a walking corpse wearing a black robe.

'So this is how I look now, huh? I guess after a million years or so, you stop caring about your appearance.'

The man sighed, and just as he was about to leave, his shadow sense saw something peculiar about him.

'A ring?'

On the man's right hand was a silver ring radiating a small white light with the symbol of a flame carved into it.

'Strange, I can't remember wearing a ring. However, the flame carved into it does look especially familiar, even more familiar than my own appearance.

Taking off the ring, the man examined it more closely. Marked on the inside of the ring, there was something written. It read.

"Lost from Light and Changing Star"

The moment he read it, his lost memories came back, flooding his mind.

Just as the man was trying to comprehend and make sense of these memories, he sensed light far away in the seemingly endless darkness he was surrounded by.

Without even the faintest hint of reluctance, he sprinted towards the light with frightening speed. After running through the darkness for quite some time, he finally saw the source of it.

Far into the distance, he saw a lighthouse, radiating a beautiful white light over this seemingly endless abyss of darkness and shadow.

And beneath the lighthouse sat a beautiful young woman sitting by a small burning fire with a soft white flame radiating light that kept the boundless darkness at bay.

The young woman looked up from the fire and stared into the endless darkness. Then a smile formed on her face. The woman opened her mouth and whispered with tears flowing out of her eyes.

"You finally came."

Sunny, remembering all his memories, dashed towards Nephis while his body regenerated, making him look identical to the first time they met in front of the academy gates.

When he finally reached her, they held each other in their embrace, not ever letting go.

Finally, being able to talk to her, he whispered with tears streaming out of his eyes:

"I love you."
